Muskegon Projects go Regional!
The Port of Muskegon and the Emerge Entrepreneur Initiative are two of the six projects being considered as projects of regional economic significance by the West Michigan Regional Prosperity Alliance (WMRPA). At the Governor's Economic Summit in March, 182 representatives from West Michigan gathered to establish a set of criteria for judging and selecting projects that the region could agree would be "projects of regional economic significance". The group accepted applications for 31 projects and the top six will present their proposals at an October meeting where attendees will be asked to vote to prioritize the top projects. At the conclusion of the meeting, the WMRPA will have a prioritized list of projects to advocate for and financially support.

The Port of Muskegon has seen a surge of recent activity in cargo ships and recreational boating. During the summer of 2015, Muskegon will host the American Great Lakes Ports Association meeting. An even greater increase in port activity may be seen pending the Coast Guard's load line-exemption that is being proposed for Lake Michigan. This would allow non-load line river barges to transit along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan between Chicago and Muskegon.

Emerge is an
entrepreneur collaborative established under the leadership of the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce. It has grown to a regional support network for entrepreneurs covering 13 counties. The new website, www.emergewm.com, is a portal for entrepreneurs to locate the resource partners who can assist them. There are currently more than 60 partner organizations making up the emerge network.

PTAC Clients Awarded $105.9 Million in Government Contracts
With the assistance of the Muskegon Area First PTAC (Procurement Technical Assistance Center), 928 government contracts were awarded to 28 companies for a total of $105.9 million during the 2013/14 fiscal year. According to a formula used by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), there were 503 new jobs created based on these contract awards.
The PTAC, a division of Muskegon Area First, services a 12-county region providing free procurement advice and counseling to companies interested in doing business with local, state, and federal governments. During 2013/14 they worked with 315 active firms and hosted 12 training sessions for local businesses looking to expand their contracts with local, state and federal governments. PTAC is also expanding their services and adding two staff members to service businesses in West Michigan. Aligning with Governor's Snyder's Prosperity Initiative, the PTAC will add two counties to their service delivery area and drop one county to deliver contracting assistance to a total of 13 counties in Fiscal Year 2014-15.
