State and Federal Legislative Updates...

Within the past month, important meetings with state officials  have been taking place...

Congressman Bill Huizenga
was in the Chamber office meeting with
constituents last week. All were  surprised by the amount of people who came to see their congressman. More than 50 people waited to meet with the congressman!!

Business leaders came together in late April for the inaugural West Michigan DC Fly-In to talk about issues of critical importance to our region. The group's primary focus was to provide a West Michigan perspective to Congress on issues such as healthcare, tax reform, transportation and the Great Lakes.

The group also took time to strengthen relationships with important trade partners and visit the embassies of Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Netherlands, Japan and the Republic of Korea. Past Chamber Board Chair and Fleet Engineers President, Wes Eklund went to represent the Lakeshore.

Governor Rick Snyder joined representatives from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Lansing last month as well to brief Chamber leaders from around the state on legislative priorities for the upcoming year. The briefing included a report on the economic competitiveness of Michigan compared to other states.

Several legislative priorities were highlighted during the briefing including, simplification of the administrative tax process, roads project funding and others. Muskegon Chamber President Cindy Larsen and Board Member, Lee Coggin, President of Baker College were in attendance.

If you want to meet with Governor Snyder's executive staff, they will be at The Coffee House and Cafe tomorrow, Friday, May 17 from 11am to 1pm.  Click here for more information.

News from the front lines...

Chris Brown joined the Chamber staff as our information specialist at the beginning of this year.  She has since been very busy catering to guests, referring your business and answering the phone calls that come in to our office suite.

"My favorite part of this job is meeting and greeting our members and guests as they enter Suite 202," Chris said. Since January 1st, more than 3,350 people have visited our offices and the suite has received over 2,500 phone calls. "That's a whole lot of 'hellos'," she added.

Here are a few other interesting highlights...
  • Third graders from across the state have been writing letters to the Chamber asking for information & the history of Muskegon.
  • Several people working on family genealogy have called looking for information on ships, stores and factories.
  • Calls for the Lake Express Ferry, Muskegon campgrounds and information on weddings on the beach are rolling in!
  • Residential relocation packs have been flying off our shelves...over 70 since January 1st!
  • Lakeshore Art Festival is generating MUCH buzz! Phone calls are coming in from Arizona to Florida to Minnesota and Illinois.
