Institutions Invest Over $156 million in Muskegon
Several institution's expansion projects are taking place along the Muskegon Lakeshore.
Baker College, Grand Valley State University (GVSU), Mercy Health Partners, and several municipalities have recently begun, completed or announced expansions totaling over $156 million.
$97 million expansion at the Mercy Campus on Sherman Blvd. This expansion
would add 80,000 square feet of new space and renovate 60,000 square feet of the existing space. Construction on this project is slated to begin as early as this summer.
Baker College of Muskegon also announced plans for the addition of an $8 million health science center at their current campus on the corner of Quarterline and Marquette. This two-story, 35,000-square-foot building will address the recent enrollment growth of their medical related programs. It will also allow the college to relocate their health, science and medical programs to a central location, while addressing a shortage of space on the current campus.
GVSU is also investing money in Muskegon with a nearly complete expansion of the Annis Water Resources Institute, located off Shoreline Drive in Downtown Muskegon. This $3.4 million research building will allow the university to add additional staff and researchers as well as offer more space for collaboration among other organizations and research institutions. Construction of this building is well underway and should be in use by mid-August.
The City of Norton Shores has just recently completed an expansion as well. The new $6.6 million, 50,000 square foot, Public Works Garage on Mt. Garfield Road opened this week.
Muskegon County is working on several new projects yielding big community investments! The most public of these projects is the $41 million Muskegon County Jail and Juvenile Center which could begin construction before the end of the year. This project will include a remodel of the existing jail, a jail addition across Pine Street, and a new juvenile center on Pine Street at the county's south campus.

Advanced Manufacturing Institute Graduates First Class
Workforce development efforts are paying off with a recent collaboration to train local residents in advanced manufacturing. The Advanced Manufacturing Institute's first class of a dozen young men graduated on March 7, with a second class slated to begin in September.
Participants in the first session came from a number of local manufacturers including CWC Textron, GMI Composites, Great Lakes Finishing, Michigan Spring & Stamping, Nowak Machine and Scherdel Sales and Technology. The graduates were given a crash course in modern advanced manufacturing and were able to gain the skills they need to succeed in the manufacturing environment.
"This program helps prepare our local workforce for new industrial jobs that require much more technical training than in the past," said Dan Rinsema-Sybenga, Director of Business & Industry Training at Muskegon Community College. "It's all about providing courses and training that meet the needs of our local companies, and we are glad to be able to offer a program that does just that."
Muskegon Area First President, Ed Garner adds, "It's a great way for companies to pool their resources together in a collective effort to provide on-the-job training. Recently, at the Governors Economic Summit, skills training was identified as one of the state's top priorities and the implementation of this program is right in line with that."
This 8 week training course is being offered by Muskegon Community College in partnership with Muskegon Area First, Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, Michigan Works Muskegon/Oceana, Employers Association of W. Michigan, and the City of Muskegon. Employers can send their own employees for $1,500 or sponsor a future employee's attendance through Michigan Works.
