Jum'a at NHS
Jum'a at NHS begins at 1:55 pm and ends at about 2:20 pm.
Our student khateeb program is now in progress. Eighth grade boys and girls receive training in writing and delivering khutbas. Girls will deliver khutbas in a single gender setting. Boys will deliver khutbas in a mixed or single gender setting. The following is a list of upcoming student khateebs for May and June.

Field Day Assignments
Our annual field day is this Friday, May 17.Students in grades 1-8 have been assigned to one of four teams for the event (Green, White, Red or Blue). Students should wear a t-shirt in their team color and NHS sweat pants or shorts for all the fun.
Parent Surveys - Deadline is this Monday, May 20
The deadline for parent surveys is this Monday, May 20. Please make sure to fill out a survey for each of your child's teachers as well as the general survey and the religious studies survey. Print out the "Thank You" confirmation page, write your name on it, and and turn it in to the main office for 2 parent service hours. If you have not received the emails with links to the surveys, please contact Nahid Ansari at nansari@newhorizonschool.org.
Middle School Arts Fest -- Friday, May 24
This year for the first time, the school will be showcasing highlights from the MS visual and performing arts programs. All parents, friends, and family members are invited to enjoy an evening celebrating the arts. At this event, you can:
- Participate in interactive art activities
- Listen to the Peace Chorus perform
- Watch film shorts from the Filmmaking class
- Enjoy a live drama performance
- See the three top acts from the MS Talent Show
- Peruse the MS Art Exhibit with original work from the Meet the Masters and Ceramics programs
Come enjoy the fun with the whole family! All ages are welcome!
Lower School Spring Concert - Friday, May 31
Be sure to join us for the Lower School Spring Concert on Friday, May 31 at 2:00 pm in Adaya Auditorium. Enjoy songs from around the world in our show, "Children Sing Around the World"! Click here to see the flyer. (The school will be holding a special Jum'a prayer at 1:15 pm to accommodate families who wish to attend prayer and the concert).
New Horizon Graduation and Promotion Exercises

Springtime Tea Party - Saturday, June 1
The 5th Annual Ladies' Springtime Tea Party is scheduled for Saturday, June 1 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena. Please look out for your invitation for more details. The CIRCUS is Coming to Town
The Kare Youth League's 61st Annual Circus and Family Fair is coming to town on:
- Friday, May 31 (5:30pm & 8pm shows) and
- Saturday, June 1 (11:30, 1:30, 4:30 & 7pm shows).
A fun-filled event for the whole family. Tickets are $10 per person (children 2 and under are free). The family fair consists of games, food booths, a petting zoo, rock climbing and much more. The family fair hours are Friday, 5 - 10 pm and Saturday, 10 am - 9:30 pm.
New Horizon receives 50% of ticket sales so everyone wins!Tickets are available for purchase in the main office.or at our website.
This is a perfect event for Dads to take the kids to enjoy the circus while moms get a relaxing afternoon at the Springtime Tea Party. Lower School
4th Grade Trip to Villa Park Farmers Market
In keeping with their studies of the State of California, the fourth graders will be visiting the Villa Park Farmers Market to experience the variety of fruit and vegetables produced in California. This is a walking field trip that will take place next Tuesday, May 21.

Guidelines for Campaigning: Students are expected to abide by these important guidelines. Available in the middle school office.
8th Grade Graduation Dress Code
Eighth grade girls who still have not brought in their clothes or a picture of themselves in their clothes should bring them to the school by next Monday, May 20.
7th & 8th Grade Trip
The 7th and 8th graders will be taking a trip to an Arabic bookstore in Anaheim, enjoy Arabic food at a nearby restaurant, and visit the IECOC for Jum'a prayer next Friday, May 24. The students will leave the campus at 9 am, and return by 3 pm. They will need to be in their full Friday uniforms and should bring enough cash for lunch and to purchase items at the bookstore if they wish.
Finals for Grades 7 and 8
- 8th Grade Finals: May 28-May 31
- Eighth graders will have finals in English and History, Math and Science, Arabic, and Islamic Studies.
- 7th Grade Finals: June 3-6
- Seventh graders will have finals in English, Math, and Arabic.
There will be no Qur'an final as students will be tested for fluency in class as part of regular assessment. Teachers will also be conducting review sessions in class as students get closer to finals week. |

Teacher Appreciation Week
The PTO would like to thank all the parents who volunteered their time or provided something delicious towards the teacher's luncheon! It was much appreciated!
PTO Play Date at the Park
Join PTO at Brookside Park this Friday, May 10 at noon, immediately after Field Day pick-up. The park is right next to the field. We will be selling Pizza at the park for lunch and will be hanging out together under the sun!
PTO FREE DRESS DAY
Thank you to all the students who returned their walkathon envelopes back to school. They will be able to participate in the FREE DRESS DAY on Wednesday, May 29. Thanks again for all your support, we truly did an AMAZING job due to all your effort!
Dennis Uniform Scrip Cards
We have Dennis Uniform scrip cards on hand in $20 increments. You can use the cards for all uniform purchases. Dennis Uniform has its annual sale in June, with 10% off. The PTO will also be collecting old uniforms for the gently-used uniform sale.

Vending Machine
Support the PTO and the children by donating healthy snacks for our middle school vending machine. We are looking for Cereal Bars, Sun Chips, and Gatorade bottles. You will receive parent service hours for your donation.

Straight P.A.T.H. Festival and Concert
The Education Committee of Masjid Al-Taqwa is excited to present the Straight P.A.T.H. Festival and Concert featuring Joshua Salaam of Native Deen on Sunday, May 19 from 12- 5 pm at Farnsworth Park, 568 East Mount Curve Ave. in Altadena. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the show. NHS students can attend at the discounted rate of $15. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.

Aldeen Foundation Arabic Summer Program for High School Students
Aldeen Foundation is holding its 6th Annual Summer Arabic Immersion Program for high school students from June 18-July 5. The deadline to apply is May 31. See the flyer for more details.
Pasadena Engineering & Science Expo
New Horizon students are invited to attend the Expo on Saturday June 1, 2013 at 10 am on the campus of Pasadena City College. They will be showcasing the Engineering & Science community in the Pasadena area, with a focus on inspiring the next generation.

The attached flyer provides some information on the event, highlighting just a few of the groups that will be showcasing their innovations with hands on demonstrations, in addition to the Pasadena City College STEM departments and several four-year universities. Hands-on workshops will also be offered as well for students to be introduced to Robotics, programming, electronics, and more.
ICSC Qur'an Competition
The Islamic Center of Southern California will be holding its Annual Pre-Ramadan Qur'an Competition on Sunday, June 23 for the children in the community. Please come with your friends and family to join them in support of our youngest generation. Please register your children as soon as you can but no later than JUNE 16. Muslim Youth Camp
Registration for MYC 2013, which will be held in Southern California from Aug. 11-17, is now open. They look forward to welcoming old and new campers alike. MYC has been held in California for over 50 years and has developed into an extended family for many campers. They would like to invite families from NHS to join or return to the MYC family.
