Jum'a at NHS

Jum'a at NHS begins at 1:55 pm and ends at about 2:20 pm. 

 

Our student khateeb program will begin this Friday. Eighth grade boys and girls receive training in writing and delivering khutbas. Girls will deliver khutbas in a single gender setting. Boys will deliver khutbas in a mixed or single gender setting. The following is a list of upcoming student khateebs for April:
  • April 19 - No Jum'a (Minimum Day)
  • April 26 - Marah Hasan and Adam Leone
  • May 3 - Dzelila Maslesa and Zekaria Beshir
  • May 10 - Zeinab Raed and Adam Leone
  • May 17 - No Jum'a (Minimum Day)

Grade Level Parent Meetings 
The last remaining parent meeting is for 8th grade and will take place tomorrow, Thur., April 18 from 8:15-9:15 am. The topics are: Transition to High School, Graduation & Class Gift, and Washington, D.C. Trip  (Guest:  Mrs. Roula Dardari). Parents receive 2 parent service hours for  attending.
 
For all parents who were able to attend the meetings in April, thank you for taking the time from your busy schedules to join us.  We appreciated your feedback as well.  Included in our presentations were some suggestions for summer activities, and parents requested that we provide this information on the school's website.  So, please check the website for links to a number of summer opportunities for all ages.
  
Spring Open House - Friday, April 19

Come see the many wonderful things your child has been doing over the year at our annual Spring Open House this Friday, April 19.  Classroom visits and food sales take place from 5 to 7:00 pm.  The evening will conclude with a special presentation including an "All-School Slide Show" and a teacher recognition ceremony from 7:00 to 7:30 pm in Adaya Auditorium.  Prayer will follow the program at 7:30 pm.  See the flyer for more details.

  

At this year's Open House, the PTO will provide a food truck that specializes in Mediterranean (and zabiha) food.  They have delicious menu options for adults and children.  Also, our 8th graders will hold a Bake Sale and sell coffee to raise money for their trip to Washington, D.C.

 

Hot Lunch Reminder

Hot lunch ordering for the month of May will close on April 20.  You can access our Hot Lunch system here. Please note that we cannot accept late orders or orders that have not been confirmed with a payment.


Springtime Tea - Save The Date!
   
The 4th Annual Ladies Springtime Tea Party is scheduled for Sat., June 1 from 11:30-2:30 in Pasadena. Please look out for more details.
  

Admissions -- Applying for a New Student

Lower School

What to Expect Next Year

It is a New Horizon tradition! On the Monday morning following Open House, students will have the opportunity to meet their teacher for next year.  This short morning activity will take place on Monday, April 22.  After meeting their new teacher for next year, students will also tour the Open House displays in all the Lower School classrooms.

 

Kindergarten Graduation Group Photo

Kindergarten students will have a group graduation photograph taken on Friday, May 3 at 8:30 am. All students should come to school as usual in their dress uniforms. Caps and gowns are at the school and will be ready and waiting for the students.

 

Petting Zoo Visit

Preschool and Pre-K students will have the opportunity to enjoy some traditional farm animals up close and personal.  Lambs, ducks, rabbits, and more will be visiting New Horizon next Wed., April 24. All preschool and pre-K students are invited to share in the experience.  Students who don't normally attend on Wednesdays will need to be picked up at 12:00 noon. 

Middle School 

Student Appreciation Day & MS Talent Show

This Friday, April 19, students will have a special schedule that will include a light academic schedule, class parties, the Talent Show, and a water balloon toss.  Pick-up is at 12 p.m.  These activities are part of our Student Appreciation Day which also includes a Homework-free Weekend (April 20-21).

Sports Club Schedule
Both boys and girls teams will have soccer games on the following dates:

8th Grade Trip to Riley's Farm
Next Tue., April 23, the 8th graders will be visiting Riley's Farm to attend a Civil War interactive workshop. This hands-on experience will further enhance their knowledge about the Civil War. The students will learn about camp life, battles fought, how the troops were mustered and even Victorian etiquette. 

We will be leaving the school at 8:00 am and returning by dismissal time. Students should bring a sack lunch and wear jeans with their PE t-shirts.  Many of the activities will take place outside, so students may want to wear sunscreen. Permission slips must be returned to Mrs. Jamshed by this Fri., April 19.

5th Grade to Skirball Center
Next Wed., April 24, the 5th graders will visit the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, where they will learn about American immigration experiences by exploring themes of culture, liberty, struggle, opportunity, and tolerance. 
 
Departing the school at 8:15 am and returning by 2:00 pm, the students will need to bring a sack lunch and wear their PE t-shirts and blue jeans. Permission slips must be returned to Mrs. Fernandez by Mon., April 22.
 
7th Grade Channel Islands Trip - April 24-26
Seventh graders will have their annual outdoor education experience from Wed.- Fri., April 24-26. The students will be going to Channel Islands for a three-day outdoor experience that emphasizes class unity through shared experience and team-building activities as well as kayaking and nature hikes. Important details about the trip were given at a parent orientation meeting on March 21. Students must bring their assigned food items to the school by Monday, April 22.  Students should be dropped off on Wednesday at the regular time and picked up on Friday by 6:30 p.m.  Please be on time!
 
8th Grade Graduation Group Photo 
The 8th grade group graduation photograph will be taken on Friday, May 3, at 9:00 am. The gowns will be distributed to the students that week. Please delicately iron the gown and have students bring it to school on May 3.  today. As usual, all students should be in full uniform with the correct Friday shoes. 
  
8th Grade Graduation Clothes
For the upcoming graduation in June, there is a dress code for boys and girls.  Boys need to wear dress pants (blue, black, tan) and dress shoes along with a dress shirt with a tie.  A suit jacket is optional.  For the girls, they need to wear nice dresses with mid-calf or maxi-length with shoes not higher than 3 inches.  No low-cut or revealing dresses are permitted.  Girls should bring their clothes or a picture of them in their clothes to school on Friday, May 10.
PTO

Walkathon Envelopes

Please remember to collect any remaining pledges and return your walkathon envelope to school by this Friday, April 19. This is PTO's annual mandatory fundraiser for the year (replacing See's Candies sales), and we hope that you will help us close this fundraiser by returning your envelopes ASAP. Thank you!

 

Food Truck at Open House

Bring your appetites with you to the NHS Open House this Friday April 19. The  Gourmet-Genie-To-Go Food Truck will have lots of tasty food options for everyone and will be zabiha. Please support the PTO by making a food purchase between 5-7 p.m. in the middle school parking lot.

 

Vending Machine

Support the PTO and the children by donating healthy snacks for our middle school vending machine. You will receive parent service hours for your donation. If you have questions about how you can help, please ask the PTO.

 

Scrip

LA Times Festival of Books

Spend a fun-filled weekend at the Los Angeles Times' 18th Annual Festival of Books this Sat., April 20 - Sun., April 21 at USC. Celebrate reading and take your children to this event, get to know famous authors and celebrities, see culinary greats create their latest recipes, catch screenings and live music, enjoy cultural entertainment and much more.The hours are from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and from 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday.  General attendance is free.   For the schedule of activities and other details, click here
 

Straight P.A.T.H. Festival and Concert

The Education Committee of Masjid Al-Taqwa is excited to present the Straight P.A.T.H. Festival and Concert featuring Joshua Salaam of Native Deen on Sunday, May 19 from 12- 5 pm at Farnsworth Park, 568 East Mount Curve Ave. in Altadena. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the show.
