Happy 100th Day of School!
Our first graders started counting school days as the year began, and today,it's official - we reached the 100th day of school! There has been plenty of learning taking place this year, and there is much more to come. Check out our Facebook page to see what some of our classes were doing today.
Reptile Family Visit for Preschool and Pre-K
Mark your calendars for Wed., Feb. 27. Our annual visit from the Reptile Family is planned for that day. All preschool and pre-K students are invited to attend this special in-house field trip. Arrival is at the usual time. However, dismissal for those students who don't normally attend on Wednesdays is at 12:00 noon.
Author Diane Lang - Bringing Love for the Unloved Animals to New Horizon
Students of New Horizon Lower School will have the opportunity to enjoy a visit from author Diane Lang on Friday, March 1. In her work as a docent at three wildlife centers in Northern California, Diane Lang has come to know, understand, and love the animals that aren't the subject of adorable YouTube videos: snakes, insects, bats, vultures, skunks, and more. She began writing them love poems, which led to the publication of the gorgeous book, Vulture Verses, in the fall of 2012.
Diane has become much in demand as a presenter and speaker at schools, parks, nature centers, and museums. She travels regularly throughout California (and the west) and is coming to New Horizon to read her poems and bring her favorite critters (including Terra the tarantula) to share with our students.
Mrs. Nelson's Toy and Book Shop will be handling book sales for the event. Look for more details to come about purchasing a signed copy of her book, Vulture Verses.

Educational Exchange for 7th/8th Graders
We are excited to inform you that our 7th and 8th graders will be visiting a local Jewish school, Sinai Akiba, next Wed., Feb. 20. Their visit is a part of the Islamic Studies and Social Studies Curricula. They will interact with their peers, take part in various educational activities, and observe the Jewish prayer. As a follow up, Sinai Akiba will visit New Horizon on March 6. During that visit, the students will participate in drama activities, learn about what it means to be an American while maintaining faith, and observe the Muslim prayer.
5th Grade Trip to California Adventures
On Thur., Feb. 21, the 5th graders will participate in the "Properties of Motion" educational program at Disney's California Adventures Park. They will have a chance to experience Newton's Laws of Motion first-hand as they ride a few rides, observe inertia in action, and build their own roller coasters while at the park.
We will leave promptly at the start of school and will return before dismissal time. Students will need to bring a sack lunch with them (they will not receive hot lunch on this day), and in their lunch, they should bring a snack (and perhaps a bottle of water) that can be eaten along the way while we are walking. We will have lunch outside of the park after our experience is over, so students should NOT bring money for food or souvenirs on this trip.
All students should wear their PE shirts and blue jeans. Please make sure you return your child's permission slip to Mrs. Eichenauer by no later than Tue., Feb. 19.

PTO
Dine with PTO
Join the PTO for a school-wide dinner night at Souplantation in Pasadena on S. Lake Ave. this Thursday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 pm. Let's start off our long weekend together!
Box Tops
Please send in all your box tops this month for 2 parents service hours! Every box top is worth 10 cents for our school. Believe it or not, it all adds up!
Silent Auction Donations
Another way to support the PTO is by donating an item to be auctioned off at the Annual Benefit Dinner on March 9. Proceeds from the bids on the auction items go directly to support the PTO. Some people have donated gift certificates from local businesses who are trying to attract new customers. Free, or steeply discounted, services from beauty salons, photography studios, flower shops and other businesses would be popular. Please ask your friends and family also. PTO would like to thank our group of committed coordinators!
Vending Machine Snack ItemsSupport the PTO and the school by donating multi-packs of Sun Chips or Trail Mix. If you have questions about other snacks or drinks that are needed, please contact Farah Bhatti at pto@newhorizonschool.org.
SCRIP
Thank you for all the scrip orders this month. The next order will be in March. For more information, please contact Francesca Elzanaty at scrip@newhorizonschool.org.
PTO Jog-A-Thon Fundraiser
