Parent Meeting this Friday, Feb. 8 @ 8:15 am- "Today's Technology...Yesterdays' Parenting"

All parents are invited to an important meeting this Friday, Feb. 8 led by Lori Getz, a Cyber Education Specialist. She recently gave a presentation to the middle school students and did a fantastic job. Lori will talk about the next generation of technology, how it's being used and what you ABSOULTELY need to know as parents!

Lori is an educator, mother, and Internet safety expert.  She has appeared on the "Dr.Phil Show," "Today," "HLN," "Dr. Drew" and several other local news and radio programs (including the Ryan Seacrest show on KIIS FM).  She often lectures live, speaking to parents, teachers and students across the country. Lori has been published in several areas including as an online expert for momlogic.com and most recently was featured in Rachel Simmons new edition of "Odd Girl Out." Her insight comes from both her professional and personal life working with children, tweens and teens.

Our Gala will be held in Adaya Auditorium and we will offer child care for pre-school through third grade children.  Older students and alumni are welcome to join us for the evening at a special ticket price.  We are very excited about our dinner program, and hope you will be able to join us on March 9th.  You should receive your invitation early next week. Gala Volunteers Needed

Calling all parents and community members!  We need your help in the following ways:

  • Help with our Gala mailing this Friday, 2/8.
  • Marketing and publicity
  • Sponsorship - if you have a business, let our school community know who you are and what you do.  Please call for sponsorship information.
  • Event set-up and planning

Help New Horizon with our most important fundraising event of the year and earn some service hours at the same time.  Call Fatima Cash at 626-795-5186 ext. 1123 if you are interested in making this Gala the most successful ever!

Annual Giving Update

We are very pleased to announce that as of today, we have raised almost $47,900 in donations and pledges.  Our parents, staff and Board of Trustees generously gave $38,847 and our mailing to the larger community has brought us closer to our goal.  Thank you to our Challenge Donors and everyone who participated in the Annual Giving Campaign for your generosity and support.

JUM'A at NHS

Jum'a at NHS begins at 1:55 pm and ends at about 2:20 pm. Below is the updated list of upcoming khateebs:

  • Feb. 8 - Ali Al-Sarraf
  • Feb. 22 - Salam Al-Marayati
  • March 1 - Jihad Turk

UCLA Research Study Seeks Participants from NHS

The National Children's Study is conducting a Diet Pilot Study to find better ways to gather information about what 2 to 4 year-old South Asian, Pakistani, Chinese, and Filipino children eat.  This information will help the National Children Study explore the relationships between diet and health.

Mothers who participate will be compensated $75, and the school will receive $25.  If you are interested, please contact Suad Naser at snaser@newhorizonschool.org.  We will also have a sign-up sheet at the parent meeting this Friday.  Once we have a list of interested parents, the researchers at UCLA will come out to the school to meet with the mothers on the details of the study.

Please see the NCS brochure for more information.

 Lower School

Tardies

This is a reminder that school begins promptly at 8:00 am.   Students should arrive at school in plenty of time to get to their classrooms and unpack prior to the start of class.  We have approximately 10% of our students who arrive late on a daily basis.  Students who come late to class create a disruption in the classroom.  Please have your students to school on time.

Driveway Parking

We are having some issues with parents parking for prolonged periods of time in the driveway.  Parking in the lower school driveway is permitted for immediate drop-off and pick-up of preschool and pre-K students during the following times:   8:30-3:00 pm.

Parents picking up children in grades K-4 should avoid lining up in the driveway until 3:15.  This will allow plenty of time for the preschool and pre-K students to be dismissed.

Middle School

Science Fair Interviews Feb. 8 and Feb. 11-14

  • The interview schedule has been posted on the MS Office window  as to when students will be expected to be called out of class for the 5-10 minute interview.
  • In some cases, students will have to stay after school for interviews as well.
  • Students need to be in their full uniform for their interviews.
  • If your child's interview is scheduled for a day other than Friday, he or she must wear their full uniform that day or bring it to school to change into for their interviews.

It is very important that the students be present for their scheduled interviews as the judges in most cases are not available to do make-up interviews, which will negatively impact a student's grade on the project. Therefore, please be sure to not schedule any off-campus appointments.

Umma Clinic and Masjid Umar Field Trip

This Friday, Feb. 8, 8th graders will be visiting the offices of the Umma Clinic to learn about poverty and healthcare in Los Angeles. After the Umma Clinic tour, they will have a picnic lunch in the park followed by Jum'a at Masjid Umar. Leaving the campus at 9 am and returning by dismissal time, students are to wear their Friday full uniform and bring a sack lunch.

Vending Machine Snack Items
Support the PTO and the school by donating multi-packs of Sun Chips or Trail Mix.  If you have questions about other snacks or drinks that are needed, please contact Farah Bhatti at pto@newhorizonschool.org

SCRIP    Thanks for a successful scrip month! The next scrip order will be Tue., Feb. 12. Please leave your order and payment at the office by 3:30 pm that day. Thanks for your support. See Scrip Order Form. See the Scrip Order Form. For more information, please contact Francesca Elzanaty at scrip@newhorizonschool.org

Silent Auction Donations

Another way to support the PTO is by donating an item to be auctioned at the Annual Benefit Dinner, which is on March 9. Proceeds from the bids on the auction items go directly to support the PTO. Some people have donated gift certificates from local businesses that are trying to attract new customers. Free, or steeply discounted, services from beauty salons, photography studios, flower shops and other businesses would be popular. If you'd like to volunteer your time to help the coordinators with this important event, please let us know, and you will be contacted. PTO would like to thank our group of committed coordinators!

Box Tops

Please start sending in your collection of box tops. If you send them in packets of 50, you will receive 2 parent service hours for every 50 box tops you collect. Please be sure to label your packets.

PTO Jog-A-Thon Fundraiser
Look out for PTO's annual Jog-a-thon, coming later this month! It's time to get into shape!
