Singapore Math Advice to Parents

In Tuesday's parent meeting, Ms. Adler of Smart Training provided important tips for parents on how to support their students in the math program even if they may not fully understand the Singapore method at this time.  These include:

Practice Math Facts

    • Help your child master their math facts with:
      • A deck of cards
      • Number cubes/dice
      • Flash cards
      • While driving in the car (practicing out loud)
      • Drill and Thrill (drill sheets from Internet, bookstore)
    • Use paper money and coins when buying things to help your child practice counting back and making change
    • Have students practice telling time on wall clocks and watches (e.g., what time is it now, what time will it be in one hour, in a half hour, etc.)

 Homework Reminder

    • If your child cannot teach you how to do the problem they learned in math class, then do not struggle over the homework as this probably indicates they did not get the concept fully.  Please write a note to the teacher.  This is important for teachers to know, so they can gauge whether/if they need to reteach the concept.

Our Students' Health

From the Parent Handbook -

"If a student is ill, he/she should remain home until he/she is well.  This will discourage incidence of illness among the students."

In light of the recent flu alerts around the country, we ask parents to be especially careful about sending students to school who have a persistent cough, runny nose, sore throat, and/or fever.  Please allow your student enough time to recover and to avoid spreading the illness.

The Uniform and the Cold Weather

According to the school's uniform policy (K-8), students may wear a heavy jacket or parka of any color when it is cold.  Any lightwear jackets that are worn must be the school's sweat jacket with or without hood.  Students can also wear a completely navy sweat jacket with NO logo.

Hot Lunch Reminder

The Hot Lunch ordering for the month of February will close  this Sun., Jan. 20. Click here to access the Hot Lunch system online. As always, we cannot accept late orders or orders that have not been confirmed with a payment.
