News and Announcements

Heartbleed Security Bug

As many of you may know, a security hole was found in a widely used internet encryption service that could mean your passwords on various sites have been at risk of theft for some time. This security breech was named the Heartbleed bug. Most major sites have already addressed or are currently addressing the problem. For a list of the safety of the largest sites on the internet, go to http://www.cnet.com/how-to/which-sites-have-patched-the-heartbleed-bug/.

Krieger Schechter Day School is very aware that we hold personal data for you and that we have students create online accounts. We wanted to assure you that KSDS has checked all of our official web services that require passwords or collect data (Google Apps, Tamritz, Campus and Constant Contact.) Currently, all of our official sites and services are safe.

If you reuse any passwords on multiple sites, these passwords may have been compromised by another site. Facebook, YouTube and other sites have recommended a password change. Please talk with your children about changing their passwords, too. Changing passwords periodically is always a good precaution and something of a necessity in this day and age. If any of the students would like to change their school passwords, the technology department would be happy to help them. Krieger Schechter Day School values Internet security highly and wishes you well online.

 Kolot

Welcome to Kolot, where we feature reflections from KSDS community members. This week's Kolot comes to us from Shelley Hendler, Head of the Middle School.

The curtain closed over a week ago, and we continue to bask in the enchantment and magic of the Grade 8 play, "Beauty and the Beast". The talent, the set, the costumes, and the proficient use of the Hebrew language contributed to the success and enjoyment of the show. There were dancing plates, napkins, and cutlery, which thrilled the audience, as well as a special tribute to the originator and cameo performer, Dafna Tasch. And, still, there was even more magic at Thursday evening's performance.

Over the years, it has become a tradition for our alumni to gather prior to the Thursday night show for pizza and chocolate tops. On average, a hundred graduates gather to rekindle friendships and to critique the latest play. I always look forward to seeing our students return, and I marvel at their enthusiasm and interest in embracing this tradition. Each year we welcome the alumni as we list the previous plays, and they, in turn, respond with applause, whistles, and even some hooting and howling as their plays are announced. Their energy throughout the performance elevates the experience for both the performers and the audience.

It's commendable, impressive, and, well, darn right inspiring to see our alumni remain so connected to a school which ends in grade 8. Long after our students graduate, they appear and reappear in many ways. Dozens of high school juniors and seniors have returned over the years to lead weekly tefilah services, a tradition which spans over 12 years. Soon they will be attending the KSDS launch party, a gathering for high school seniors and their parents before this class moves on to their next phase in life.  Alumni have chaperoned our overnight trips to TEVA, NYC, and even Israel on occasion. This year's play included alumni on drums, as assistant to the director, make-up artists, and lighting support. Just this week, an alumnus served as a substitute teacher in the Middle School. We've had alumni assist with the Learning Festival and complete their senior internships at KSDS. Last month a college freshman who has published a book returned to her roots and shared details about the publishing process with the grade 7 students in the very room where she jump started her passion for writing.

It wasn't that long ago that we welcomed our first admission of an alum's child; there was real cheering when that application was submitted. And now, we have alumni on staff and on the KSDS Board, a reflection of the maturity of our school and the strong sense of community. So why is the alumni connection so important, and why does it give us so much nachas? It represents l'dor v'dor, from generation to generation, a commitment to the traditions and future of the school, a validation that KSDS serves as an important and valued experience.

As the faces of the faculty continue to change, we are left with the challenge of always warmly welcoming back our alumni in a way in which makes them feel respected, appreciated, and connected to the school. They are our best representative, the ones who can deliver the message of the special experience and education that is created by attending Krieger Schechter Day School. It behooves us to nurture this contingency of our community as they, in turn, contribute greatly to our future.

On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, I wish you meaningful seders, enjoyable family time, and peace and happiness (and warm, sunny weather) in the days ahead.

Shelley Hendler

Middle School Head
