Students Lead Meaningful Yom HaShoah Program

On Thursday, MTA honored the memory of the 6 million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust by holding an incredibly meaningful Yom HaShoah program, designed by students in conjunction with our Student Life Department. The presentation was organized by many of the 21 Seniors who visited Poland just a few weeks ago together with Rabbi Taubes as part of the "Names, Not Numbers" senior elective course. The program was presented twice, first to the 9th and 10th graders and then to the 11th and 12th graders, in order to accommodate everything appropriately to each student.

Rabbi Taubes started things off by providing an introduction about the importance of reflecting upon the huge number of people who lost their lives. Following this, five of the Seniors shared their personal experiences about what they gained from their visit to Poland, why it is  so important to know the history of the Jews of Poland and to study about the Holocaust even today, and how we can personalize those tragic experiences and learn from them. Each boy then lit a candle in connection with the loss focused upon in his remarks. The final candle was lit by Rabbi Taubes after sharing his experience of visiting Poland for the first time as well and noting that while we are correct to mourn those who tragically died as Jews, it is even more important to live as Jews today ourselves.

The students were very inspired to hear first hand from their peers about what it meant for them to visit a place that had so much history before the Holocaust and that was lost through such horrible destruction. The program also included a few videos, produced by Shimmy Socol ('16), detailing what the Seniors saw in Poland. Overall, the event was very meaningful to the students and they learned a lot about the Holocaust from a different perspective than that which most were used to in the past. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Tova Rosenberg, creator of "Names, Not Numbers," for organizing the Seniors' visit to Poland.

MTA Hosts the Yeshiva League Chess Championship
by Ben Tzion Zuckier ('17)

In an ultimate showdown between the top Yeshiva Chess League teams, hosted in our very own MTA library, Ramaz pulled away with thevictory, followed closely by MTA, which came in second place. In third and fourth place were Frisch and North Shore, respectively. MTA won four out of its seven total games. These games received a surprising amount of chess players and spectators as well, including those waving MTA rally towels. MTA enjoyed hosting this tournament and looks forward to winning next year!

MTA's Final Blood Drive of the Year
by Shuey Boniuk ('16)

This year's third and final blood drive was another great success, with forty-two donations of a pint each, or a total of five and a quarter gallons of blood. These donations will provide blood to approximately three people per pint, or 126 people, who so desperately need this life-saving blood. It will assist these people to recover from either their ailments or motor vehicle accidents. This communal accomplishment of both the MTA student body and faculty, which was accomplished despite the pressures of upcoming finals and AP exams, truly speaks wonders of the generous hearts of the MTA community. I would personally like to commend my fellow donors and Arista volunteers for their collective contributions, which enabled this event to be so successful. Finally, the nursing staff provided by the New York blood center cannot be thanked enough for their accommodative service and attitudes.
JV Softball Update
by Akiva Richman ('19)

The MTA Lions JV Softball team picked up a big win over the SAR Sting this past Monday. The Lions took a commanding lead in the very first inning by scoring four runs, the first two coming thanks to Coby Sorotzkin's ('19) 2-run homer. Then, in the third inning, Chaim Weinstein ('18) hit a grand-slam, his second of the season. In the fifth inning, Daniel Landa ('19) hit a solo home run, giving him two home runs this season, as MTA pulled away for the win.

The Lions could not have won, though, without their amazing pitching and defense. Meir Uretsky ('18) pitched the whole game for MTA, giving up only 2 runs. With amazing defensive plays by Eitan Warburg ('19), Gabe Isaacs ('18), Coby Sorotzkin, Meir Uretsky, and Eitan Pfieffer ('19), MTA robbed SAR of multiple hits to help secure the win.

With this win over SAR, the Lions finished their season at 4-2, securing a spot in the playoffs. This is the first time in several years that the MTA Lions JV Softball team has been in the playoffs, and the Lions are hoping to bring home the championship!
