Prof. Alan Dershowitz ('55) Returns to YUHSB to be Interviewed for Centennial Course
by Mendel Weintraub ('16)

Prof. Alan Dershowitz '55
As we near our school's historic 100th year, seven MTA seniors - Eli Kahn, Yosef Kurlantzick, Shanan Miller, Avi Rothwachs, David Schmidt, Shimmy Socol, and Mendel Weintraub - are documenting the history of YUHSB as part of the elective course: "TA 100"--COVERING A CENTURY AT MTA: 100 YEARS OF MEMORIES."

Prof. Leo Taubes '51
TA 100 is a unique course that combines sessions on American and New York Jewish history as background information, learning documentary film making tools to prepare for conducting interviews with MTA alumni, and compiling an oral history documentary film to be presented for the 100th anniversary of our yeshiva.

As part of our preparation, we had the privilege of meeting with Sarah Ben Tzvi, the editor of the Israeli magazine Segula, Israel's equivalent to the National Geographic Jewish History Magazine.

The filmmaking component was taught by Documentary Filmmaker Michael Puro, and included mock interviews and sessions on videography, i.e. sound, camera, lighting, and film editing using professional film editing programs.

Mr. Bernard Rothwachs '54
After months of preparations we were honored to finally meet, interview, and film some of our esteemed alumni including Professor Leo Taubes (MTA '51 and father of our very own Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Michael Taubes '76), Bernard Rothwachs (BTA '54 and grandfather of our own Avi Rothwachs '16), and Professor Alan Dershowitz (BTA '55). We asked questions about their life in our high school, about their education, about their pranks, about their activism in the Jewish world, about their message to us and lastly about their wishes for MSTA as it embarks on the next 100 years.

The mission has yet to be completed, though; we have 2 more interviews scheduled, and then comes the task of editing and producing the documentary. In addition, the project will continue through next year with more interviews and will culminatre with the compiling of a book of alumni reflections.
Arista Honors Society Inducts Seniors and Welcomes Juniors at Annual Dinner
by Raziel Siegman ('17)

After school on Thursday, the Junior and Senior Arista members, accompanied by many of their parents and faculty members , headed to Belfer Hall for the annual Arista dinner. The night kicked off with light appetizers as people arrived. Once everyone was seated, Mrs. Levitt, who directs the MTA Arista chapter, welcomed the guests and introduced speeches from various Senior Arista members, who described what it means to be in Arista, what the society stands for, as well as outlining many of their accomplishments over the past year. One of this year's new highlights, for example, has been the "Each One Teach One" program, a service in which Arista members tutor students every morning during breakfast in the library. After a presentation by the MTA chorus, a delicious chinese dinner was served to the attendees. After dinner, Rabbi Taubes gave an inspiring speech which was centered around the trip that he took recently with the "Names, Not Numbers" Seniors to Poland. Rabbi Taubes described how the participants visited concentration camps and memorials, but more importantly, how they learned about the improbable and staggering interest in and revitalization of Jewish life in Poland, once the center of Ashkenazi Jewry. To cap off the evening, each Senior Arista member was recognized for his service, the Juniors were officially inducted, and next year's Arista officers were announced. Thank you to Mrs. Levitt who dedicated many weeks in preparation for the dinner, and for all the work that she puts into the Arista program.
Juniors and Parents Enjoy College Night
by Ari Englander ('17)

On Tuesday night, Juniors and their parents had the opportunity to attend MTA's annual College Night, at which representatives of several colleges were present to discuss their respective schools with the students and answer any questions that they had. The program was held in Furst Hall's Room 501 auditorium and featured opening remarks by Rabbi Taubes, an introduction about the MTA College Guidance Department by Rabbi Brownstein, and an introduction to the college application process by Mr. Sragow. Next, Mr. Jonathan Schwalb, Associate Director of University Housing and Residence Life at YU, former Admissions Counselor, and founder of The College Edge, gave a very informative presentation entitled, "Why and How to Write a Killer Essay." For the next hour, students and parents were able to peruse the various booths of represented colleges, asking questions and learning information about each one. The colleges that were represented included University of Chicago, Columbia University, John Jay, Kingsborough, Maryland, Princeton, Queens College, University of Tel Aviv, YU, and YU Honors. We'd like to thank Mr. Sragow and Rabbi Brownstein for the time and effort they put into organizing this important event.
Leadership Institute Hosts 3 on 3 Tournament for KosherTroops
by Raziel Siegman ('17)

This past week, MTA's Kosher Troops 3 on 3 basketball tournament fundraiser wss held to benefit KosherTroops. It was organized as a chesed activity by the Leadership Institute, the special community leadership program directed by Rabbi Shalom Richter. A few dozen students paired up in groups of 3, and participated in the tournament during lunch in The MAX. All of those who played donated money to Kosher Troops, an organization that provides Kosher food for Jewish soldiers in the American army. This is especially helpful during Pesach, when many soldiers would otherwise not have matzah and Kosher for Pesach food. After all was said and done, the team of Aaron Saxon ('17), Josh Klein ('17), and Max Herskowitz ('17) took home the championship, but everybody enjoyed playing ball for such a worthy cause.

JV Softball Update
by Akiva Richmond ('19)

This past week, the MTA JV Softball team continued their season with games against Hillel, Maor, Frisch, and JEC. In the first game of a double header on Sunday, the Lions lost to Hillel. In the second game of the double header, this time against Maor, the Lions fell behind 9-2 before the fifth inning when they rallied to score eight runs to take a 10-9 lead. Unfortunately, Maor scored two more runs in the sixth inning and won 11-10.

The next day, the Lions were hungry for victory and took on Frisch. Frisch started off strong with four runs in the first inning. MTA came up to bat in the bottom of the inning and cut the lead in half. Later in the game, one of the Frisch batters hit the ball into deep right-center field, but Coby Sorotzkin ('19) ran it down and made an incredible catch. After another MTA run, Chaim Weinstein ('18) came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded and one out. He smacked the ball to deep right-center field for a grand slam to put MTA up 7-4. Going into the bottom of the last inning, the score was tied at 9 and MTA came up to bat needing only one run to win. Zachary Gurwitz ('18) led the inning off with a single. After two more hits by Coby Sorotzkin and Gabe Isaacs ('18), MTA had the bases loaded with only one out. Zeve Kornwasser ('18) then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring the winning run, and MTA won 10-9.

On Thursday, the Lions played against JEC. MTA, as the away team, started off the game scoring five runs in the first inning, one of which was on a solo home run by Daniel Landa ('19). It only took JEC two innings to catch up and regain the lead, but MTA regained the led in the fourth inning and never looked back. The MTA bats were on fire, scoring 12 runs in total to beat JEC 12-8.

Special shout-outs to Eitan Warburg ('19) who played an incredible shortstop all week, and Meir Uretsky ('18), MTA's starting pitcher, who ended the week with a strikeout to complete the game vs. JEC.

The JV Softball team has one more game against SAR after Pesach and are hoping to get both a win and a spot in the playoffs.
Soccer Lions Continue to Dominate
by Zack Stein ('17)

MTA vs Magen David:
In the Lions' second to last game before the Pesach break, they looked to come out of the gates strong and take down the MDY Warriors. MTA did just, that taking control from the opening kick. The game ended in just three quarters as the Lions picked up their 5th mercy in a row winning by a dominating score of 23-2.

MTA vs Ramaz:
This past Thursday night, the MTA Lions traveled downtown to take on the Ramaz Rams before the big season finale matchup against SAR. MTA executed their game plan almost perfectly and conquered Ramaz by a final score of 9-1. This was the Lion's 6th mercy in a row and they now have a chance to win the division for the first time ever as they take on the talented SAR Sting next month.
