YUHS Annual Dinner: #StrongerTogether
by Yehuda Alter ('16)

Ms. HLZacks is presented with the "Faculty Recognition Award"
This past Wednesday night, the YUHS community held its annual dinner at Marina Del Rey in the Bronx. The event honored YUHSB parents, Rabbi Mark ('85) & Jill Wildes, parents of graduate Yosef ('15) and current student Ezra ('17), and chair of our science department, Ms. Megan HLZacks, as well as YUHSG parents Mr. and Mrs. Rafael and Shifra Yehoshua and longtime YUHSG Faculty member Mrs. Abby Lerner.

Hundreds gathered to pay tribute to the inspiring honorees and to celebrate all of the incredible achievements of both YU High Schools. After the formal program, guests were treated to a massive dessert buffet, while being entertained by music from the award winning MTA band.

Over the course of the fabulous evening, guests enjoyed seeing more about how we are Stronger Together in Torah, Innovation, and Community.

MTAPAC Visits Capitol Hill
by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)

April 7th served as a meaningful and productive day on two fronts for the MTA students who participated in the school's annual lobbying mission to Washington D.C. The Hatzioni Club members who partook in this event had been preparing for weeks in advance by researching bills, familiarizing themselves with specific members of congress, and other such things.  At Hillel International headquarters, the students had the privelege of hearing from Ambassador Martin Peled-Flax, former Israeli Ambassador to Belarus and current Minister for Congressional Affairs at the Israeli Embassy in the USA.

Groups were divided into roughly six or seven members per senator or member of congress, and each had a faculty advisor guide them through the process. IN addition to the member of the YUHSB faculty leading each group, there were two other group leaders; a senior and a junior who had previous lobbying experience. They were privileged to take advantage of this incredible opportunity by leading a group to lobby for a cause they held close to them: the State of Israel. While the trip most certainly served as a wonderful chance to build upon certain skills, such as public speaking, research, and presentation, it did serve another purpose as well. Each student and faculty member was able to speak one on one with either a member of congress, a senator or an aide. The mission was also beneficial because it opened a gate for many students to enter the fascinating and intriguing world of politics.

Another important aspect of the students' work which resulted in success was the research aspect. In preparation of the lobbying mission, each student researched both "his" senator and his or her view on Israel as well as one of the bills. The bills which the students advocated for - 269, 615 and 619 - discuss both the nuclear Iran crisis as well as a further progression in American-Israeli relations. The former topic spanned from imposing sanctions on Iran to negotiations that must be undertaken. The latter topic covered a completely different spectrum, in which students discussed cracking down on BDS, a movement dedicated to the the demise of Israel, as well as furthering military aid and trade with Israel. All in all, the MTAPAC mission to Washington was a huge a success on both the personal and political fronts.

On Wednesday, the day before the trip, the MTA lobbyists heard from Shahar Azani, Executive Director of the North East Region of StandWithUs; Mr. Azani helped prepare the students for their mission.

MTA Students Explore Jewish History and Life in Poland
by David Schmidt ('16)

Over the past 10 days, students in MTA's "Names, Not Numbers" program traveled to what used to be the country with the largest Jewish population in the world, Poland. This trip was billed as a "Chessed and Leadership Training Mission" which indeed it was, as the goal was not only to see what transpired during the terrible years of the Holocaust, when some 3 million Polish Jews were exterminated, but also to get a taste of what is happening in terms of Jewish life today in a land where Jews have resided for about 1000 years, and to meet and work with some of today's Jewish leaders there.

While there, the 21 MTA students, accompanied by our Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Taubes and Mr. Gabi Danielli of our Hebrew Department, as well as by Mr. Dov Rosenberg, who coordinated the trip (and joined later by Mrs. Tova Rosenberg, creator of the Names, Not Numbers program), had the opportunity to learn about Jewish life pre-World War II and of course to learn about the Holocaust by visiting many historical sites and memorials, including several concentration camps where we davened, sang, and reflected upon the horrors which took place there. We also visited the gravesites of many prominent rabbinic figures from our history, including the Rama, the Bach, the Maharshal, the Noam Elimelech, the Chozeh of Lublin, the Netziv, Reb Chaim Soloveitchik, and others who shaped the Torah world of today.

Besides touring, our students met with several Polish Jewish leaders of today, including the Rosh Kollel of Warsaw, the Lauder School Principal and Assistant Principal responsible for On-Line Jewish Education, the Director of the Krakow JCC. In addition, they herad from a righteous gentile whose family saved two Jews during the war, a group of non-Jews who are involved in Holocaust education, the organizers of the famous Krakow Jewish Festival, a survivor who is active in the revival of Jewish life in Krakow, and Jewish and non-Jewish students in Krakow. In addition, they participated in a Shabbaton organized for Polish Jewish students in the Lauder School's on-line educational program.

Towards the start of the trip, the group met with Ms. Olga Kaczmarek, who is responsible for the international relations at the "Forum for Dialogue Between Nations," a Polish organization whose mission is to teach tolerance and eradicate anti-Semitism. After Olga's presentation about the work done by the Forum in over 150 small towns and 250 schools in Poland, Rabbi Taubes noted that "the students in this program are the future leaders of Poland, who now have the knowledge, experience, and appreciation of the history of the Jews, and what our ancestors went through." The Forum for Dialogue posted an article on Facebook about the meeting with our students.

The trip included Torah learning and Shiurim appropriate to the various places where were visiting, a tremendous spirit of Ruach, and a sense of true friendship among the participants. It was thus a highly successful trip on multiple fronts, and served as an incredible culmination to a meaningful and crucial experience in the "Names, Not Numbers" program. Over the course of the trip, Hillel Krief ('16) wrote a daily blog featuring many additional details which can be found here: http://yuhsb.blogspot.com.

MTA Soccer Lions Continue to Dominate
by Ariel Dubizh ('17)

This past Tuesday, the MTA soccer team played their fourth match of the season at Flatbush and  earned their third win. The Lions got off to a great start, scoring 4 goals in the first quarter without giving up any. Over the next two quarters, each team scored 2 goals per quarter, leading the game into its final frame with a score of 8-4 in favor of the Lions. However, it wouldn't be long before the Lions scored three more goals and defeated their rivals, Flatbush, by the mercy rule. The final score of the game was 11-4. The Lions were led by David Pando ('16) with three goals and Benjy Bral ('18) with two.
