Students Participate in Gambling Awareness Day at MTA
As a part of the National Problem Gambling Awareness Month this March, MTA faculty and students participated in Gambling Awareness Day, bringing this rarely talked about but very important topic to life. On Tuesday, March 15th, regular Shiurim and classes were set aside to make time to discuss the dangers of problem gambling. Using halachic sources on gambling and addictions, Rebbeim opened up the day's topic in their Shiurim to spirited lessons and conversations that included March Madness, Fantasy Football, lotteries, casinos and card games. Then, the entire school gathered in Lamport Auditorium to hear Mr. Ike Dweck, Founder and Executive Director of The SAFE Foundation, an outpatient addictions clinic in Brooklyn for the Jewish Community. After a brief introduction by Mrs. Tamar Sheffey, Director of Guidance, who coordinated the day's events, Mr. Dweck shared his personal story of addiction and recovery and the lessons that he has learned from his experiences. Students listened attentively and asked many very poignant questions during the Question/Answer period which followed. Rabbi Taubes ended the program by echoing some of Mr. Dweck's words and bringing mentioning some halachic and cultural aspects of gambling. One student commented after the talk, "Mr. Dweck was forced to give up a lot of really great opportunities because of his gambling problem...his talk was eye opening and taught me a lot."
Following the assembly, our General Studies faculty brought the subject to life through their own subjects. They discussed scientific articles on the brain function of addiction as well as probability and game theory, and participated in the "Prisoner's Dilemma" as it applied to splitting money, a form of betting. They also watched videos on how to make healthy choices in this area, analyzed New York Times articles on fantasy gaming and gambling and held other classroom based activities. Our Hebrew Language Department incorporated the day's' topic as well, as some defined "gambling" in Hebrew and used a Hebrew language story on the topic for students to read and discuss while others read the Hebrew news article about possibly opening a casino in Eilat and watched a powerful Powerpoint created by Morah Haibi. A teacher from the P'tach program shared a personal family story about how gambling played a very big role in his family's life which had students and faculty members hanging on every word. Pins, bracelets and pens from the National Council of Problem Gambling were made available by Mrs. Sheffey in her office for anyone who stopped by. It was a very powerful and informative day all around.

Yeshiva Fellowship Enjoys Pennsylvania Shabbaton
This past Shabbos, the Yeshiva Fellowship held its much anticipated Shabbaton at the Mount Laurel Resort in White Haven, Pennsylvania. The weekend kicked off with learning and dinner on Thursday night at Congregation Beth Abraham in Bergenfield, where the boys began studying the first perek of Makkos, which they would complete over the course of Shabbos. On Friday, the Fellowship boys headed to Coastal Sports where they enjoyed a day of indoor sports including archery tag, a new game called "tchoukball" and bubble soccer. From there, they went to the hotel where they prepared for an exciting and uplifting Shabbos.
After an inspiring Kabbalas Shabbas, they sat down for a special seudah filled with lively zemiros and a stimulating dvar Torah from Eli Szafranski ('17). They then returned to the Beis Midrash for another seder, which was followed by an oneg. Rabbi Axelrod introduced an original niggun, which has since become the unofficial Yeshiva Fellowship niggun. Afterwards, there was more learning, ping pong, billiards, talking with Rebbeim and just hanging out with friends.
After davening and kiddush on Shabbos morning, the Beis Midrash was once again filled the with a beautiful kol Torah as the boys continued chazarah on Makkos. The seudah on Shabbos day featured divrei Torah from Noam Josse ('17) and Izzy Klavan ('18). Shabbos was capped off with an inspiring shalosh seudos filled with uplifting zemiros and divrei Torah. In fact, another religious group at the hotel commented as to how inspired they were by our moving zemiros and the special kol Torah that emanated from our Beis Midrash.
On Motzaei Shabbos, there was an exciting Melaveh Malkah which doubled as a chazarah siyum on the first perek of Makkos. The event featured music, singing and lively dancing to cap off an inspiring and enjoyable Shabbos.
We would like to thank the families who generously helped sponsor our Shabbaton, as well as Rabbi Danto, Rabbi Axelrod and Rabbi Pearl who worked hard planning and implementing this incredible weekend. We are also grateful to Meir Levy ('17), Reuven Penn ('17), and Jack Alkhabaz ('17 who helped prepare and serve the food during Shabbos.

MTA LEADers Receive Mentorship from Sy Syms Students
by Akiva Richmond ('19)
MTA LEAD is a program where students get to learn about entrepreneurship, draw up business plans, and ultimately present their ideas to a panel of distinguished judges. This past Monday, the students in MTA LEAD had the opportunity to discuss their business ideas with students from Yeshiva University's Sy Syms School of Business (SSSB) with whom they are paired up, over a pizza lunch. The SSSB students - Joshua Ammar, Kolya Miller, and Josh Wildes - are volunteering their time to help these students think about and prepare their business ideas. They will work with them over the remaining course of the semester to help the students prepare for the final competition; the conclusion of the program is a "Shark Tank" style presentation to the MTA LEAD Executive Council, which is comprised of SSSB Deans and faculty, and other business leaders.

Rabbi Mendelson's Shiur Spends Shabbos in Brooklyn
Last Shabbos, Rabbi Mendelson's shiur had their annual Brooklyn Shabbaton. Accompanied by the four Makor Chaim boys the weekend kicked off with a tour of the Living Torah Museum on Friday morning. The Shiur was shown many ancient historical artifacts as well as the smallest kosher Sefer Torah in the world, which is amazingly just a few inches long. After lunch at Mendelssohn's Pizza (not associated with Rabbi Mendelson!) and bowling, the boys prepared for Shabbos at their hosts and then headed to Rabbi Mendelson's shul, Kehila Marine Park, for Kabbalas Shabbos.
After the first seudah at Rabbi Mendelson's house, the shiur had a Tisch and heard from Rabbi Tzvi Twersky, who spoke about the significance of the number 40 in Tanach. On Shabbos day, following the second Shabbos seudah, the shiur was entertained by three skits--put on by Rabbi Mendelson, a few boys from the shiur, and the Makor Chaim boys--which had been prepared earlier in the week. A gala Shalosh Seudos was held at Kehilla Marine Park with a special shiur on the topic of "Gambling in Halacha" by Rabbi Mendelson.
On Motzaei Shabbos, the shiur went to a karate dojo where the boys practiced kicking and punching, and also learned basic self defense from knife attacks, a prevalent issue in the subways and unfortuantely in Israel. Next, they headed back to the Mendelson home, where they enjoyed a pizza, french fries and ice cream Melaveh Malka that featured a second skit and a shmuz from Rabbi Mendelson, as well as some interesting words of Torah and history by Rabbi Brownstein. To cap off the night, they had a kumsitz that included an inspiring story from Rabbi Mendelson.
The Shabbaton was a meaningful experience for the whole shiur, who bonded together and with Rabbi Mendelson. Additionally, it was the shiur's final opportunity to spend time with the Makor Chaim boys before they returned to Israel on Monday. We would like to thank the Mendelson family, and especially Rebbetzin Mendelson for all her hard work and preparation.

New Head of School Rabbi Josh Kahn Spends Time at MTA
Last Thursday, hours before Rabbi Josh Kahn was officialy announced to the broader public as the next Head of School at our illustrious yeshiva, Rabbi Kahn was formally introduced to the YUHSB faculty. Senior Vice President of Yeshiva University Rabbi Josh Joseph described the search process and how excited the committee and Board of Trustees were to welcome Rabbi Kahn. RIETS Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Yaakov Neuburger, who is close with Rabbi Kahn from the Bergenfield community, then introduced Rabbi Kahn by describing his explemerary middos, warm personality, and leadership skills as a ben-Torah. Finally, Rabbi Kahn shared his vision and passion, after which Rabbi Taubes shared his own excitement of the hire, having had the opportunity to spend much time with Rabbi Kahn over the past couple of weeks. Mrs. Miriam Goldberg, Chair of the YUHS Board of Trustees, concluded by thanking the faculty for their continued support and patience throughout the search process.
On Monday, Rabbi Kahn made his first official visit! At Shacharis, Rabbi Kahn received the kibbud of an aliyah, and he then spent the day meeting with faculty, school leaders, and students. He spent the time getting to know them and hearing their thoughts and interests, and gathered information as to what people loved in MTA and what areas they thought could be improved. We're looking forward to many more of Rabbi Kahn's visits of the following months, until his official start date of July 1st.
A special Meet & Greet with Rabbi Kahn for Current and Incoming Parents is scheduled for this coming Sunday, March 20th at 9:30 AM. Parking has been arranged in University Lot E; please rsvp at rsvp@yuhsb.org.

Mock Trial Fall Just Short in Round of 32
by CJ Glicksman ('16)
After winning in their first three matches, the Mock Trial team played its fourth match of the year this past Wednesday night against the highly touted Stuyvesant School. Lawyers Chaim Roffman ('16), Yehuda Goldberg ('16), and Ben Zuckier ('17) argued on behalf of Officer Flanagan. They faced the defense of the Stuyvesant School who supported the alleged drug dealer, Kelly Roberts. The witnesses, Leslie Mooney, Officer Flanagan, and Dr. Jordan Taylor, a forensic chemist who specialized in the particular drug that Roberts allegedly sold, were played by CJ Glicksman ('16), Mordechai Flamenbaum ('19), and Noam Mayerfeld ('19), respectively. After three heated hours of opening statements, direct examinations, cross examinations, objections, and closing statements, MTA unfortunately did not emerge victorious. They gained sixty-two out of sixty-five possible points (falling only two points short of their opponents). Unfortunately, this playoff loss means elimination from the tournament and they will thus not advance to the final round. Nevertheless, they hold their heads up high after another incredible season and look to improve and perhaps take home the gold next year.

Varsity Basketball Lions Lose to Buzzer Beater in
Sarachek Tournament Tier III Championship
After beating the Hebrew Academy Heat of Montreal 58-44 in the annual Sarachek Tournament Tier III semi-final game on Sunday, the Lions took on the Fuchs Mizrahi Mayhem of Cleveland on Sunday for the Championship.
With the score tied, Albert Waxman hit a long-range three pointer at the buzzer to lift the Mayhem over the Lions in an exciting back-and-forth game. Waxman, who finished with 29 points, including going 7-13 from deep, carried his team to a historic win for Fuchs Mizrachi. With 1:08 remaining, Waxman hit a contested three-pointer to tie the game at 51, setting up his team for the eventual victory. In the first quarter, both teams came out with hot hands. The Lions pulled ahead 19-15, but in the second quarter they were held to only 5 points by the Mayhem's stifling defensive pressure. In the half, both teams made a combined nine three-pointers and Fuchs went into the break leading 26-24. In the third quarter, Fuchs Mizrachi's Ilan Senders decided he wasn't going to let Waxman take over this game alone. He produced 12 points on an incredible 86% shooting, impacting the game both on the defensive side and on the drive. Although Senders lacked a few inches against MTA's big men, he explained in his postgame interview that he made up for it with "heart and strength."
Yehuda Buchbinder led the way for the Lions with 15 points, including three three-pointers. Binyamin Buchbinder and Eli Gruenberg added 9 points apiece as well.

The Soccer Lions warm up before their match

Coming off a disappointing loss to SAR last week, the MTA soccer team had their second match of the season this past Tuesday; this time in The Lions' Den. A new team from YDE entered the den, not knowing what the Lions had in store for them. The Lions roared - fast and furious - and ultimately walked away 17-1 victors.

Last Monday, we said farewell to our Yeshivat Makor Chaim Exchange Students. The MTA students danced and sang with them as they headed off to the airport, escorted by Rabbi Richter.
