MTA's National Merit Scholarship Finalists
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced the names of finalists from across the country in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. MTA is proud to note that two of our students are among these finalists: Yishai Eisenberg ('16) and Tsahi Halyo ('16). These academically talented high school seniors were chosen from among the 16,000 semifinalists that were announced last October. They now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered later on this year.
MTA is also proud to note that CJ Glicksman ('16), Yair Gross ('16), Aryeh Hagler ('16), and Michael Kolber ('16) were named as Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. Although they will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Mazal Tov to all!!

Honors College 10 Visits the MET
by Jonathan Felman '18
This past Monday, the tenth grade Honors College, accompanied by Mr. Kulnis and Dr. Taylor, took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While there, they were taken on a captivating tour in which they were shown beautiful pieces of art, and then given free time to analyze the works of Monet, Van Gogh, and other world-famous artists. This trip could not have come at a better time as it coincided directly with their learning about these very same ideas in history class - Realism, Impressionism, and other art movements that were popular in the 1800's. The students greatly enjoyed this trip and are looking forward to applying their newfound knowledge to their studies.

MTA Mock Trial Team Wins Again!
by CJ Glicksman ('16)
The Mock Trial team played its second match of the year this past Wednesday night. Lawyers Chaim Roffman ('16), Yehuda Goldberg ('16), and Ben Zuckier ('17) argued on behalf of Officer Flanagan. They faced the defense of the Bronx School of Law and Public Service who supported the alleged drug dealer, Kelly Roberts. The witnesses, Leslie Mooney, Officer Flanagan, and Dr. Jordan Taylor, a forensic chemist who specialized in the particular drug that Roberts allegedly sold, were played by Mendel Weintraub ('16), Mordechai Flamenbaum ('19), and Noam Mayerfeld ('19), respectively. After three heated hours of opening statements, direct examinations, cross examinations, objections, and closing statements, MTA emerged victorious. They gained sixty-two out of sixty-five possible points (falling only two points short of their counterparts, the defense, which played and won last week). Afterwards, the Mock Trial team left the Manhattan Court House with their heads held high once again. They hope to continue their success in their next match which will not take place for two weeks, because they will now receive a bye in the tournament as a reward for their accomplishments.

MTA Model Congress Receives Awards in Woodmere
by Chaim Dov Roffman ('16)
HAFTR High School hosted the 27th annual Yeshiva League Model Congress Competition on Thursday, March 3, 2016. Over 300 students attended from yeshiva high schools throughout New York and New Jersey to participate in the day's events. We were fortunate enough to have AIPAC's Northeast Regional Political Director, Dr. Sharon Goldman, speak to the students about the need for politicians who can fight on behalf of Israel and who can also use debate as a tool for compromise. Model Congress is a simulation of a Congressional conference where students are placed in various Congressional committees, allowing them to experience American government first-hand. Students prepared and debated bills pertaining to important issues facing our nation today, working in the following committees: Appropriations, Armed Services, Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Education and Labor, Energy and Commerce, Environment and Public Works, Ethics, Foreign Relations, Homeland Security, Intelligence, Judiciary, Science and Technology, Transportation and Infrastructure, and Ways and Means. There was even a Crisis Committee that dealt with newly emerging crises. HAFTR students took on the role of chair people of these committees, while the students of a dozen or so other schools involved themselves in heated debates over the important issues, thus enabling them to gain knowledge of our political process. At the end of the competition, awards were given to the top three students in each of the fifteen committees. Six out of MTA's thirteen delegates won honorable mention awards. Congratulations to CJ Glicksman ('16), Tsahi Halyo ('16), Noam Josse ('17), Yehuda Goldberg ('17), Meir Uretsky ('18), and Zeve Kornwasser ('18) on their awards. All in all, the event served as a great opportunity for the MTA participants to gain exposure to real life political scenes.

This past week, the MTA Soccer Lions had their first game of the season, facing long time rival and last year's Yeshiva League champion, SAR. However the Lions were not intimidated by their foes, and "kicked off" the game by scoring in the first five seconds on a goal by Ariel Feuerstein ('17) with an assist by David Pando ('16). After fifteen minutes of intense soccer play, the first period ended with MTA trailing by a score of 5-2. The second period did not look promising after the first few minutes, and the Lions found themselves down. However, the team quickly recovered by switching up the defense and proceeded to hold off SAR from scoring for a solid ten minutes after halftime. Unfortunately, that did not last the entire period, and the SAR Sting managed to score 4 times, to pull away for the win. Despite their loss, the Lions are proud of their accomplishments - particularly keeping the game so close between them and the supposed best team in the league, and would like to give a shout out to Ariel Feuerstein ('17) for 5 points, Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16) for 1, and to goalie, Sam Weissman ('18) for his incredible performance.

MTA Lion Kings Continue Their Undefeated Season
by Yosef Schatz ('16)
On Monday, several students from MTA filed onto the bus headed to DRS for the second chess match of the year. However, due to other events at MTA, some of MTA's finest chess players were unable to attend the match. Captain Akiva Sherman ('16) quickly scrambled to collect enough students. At the tournament, MTA met and played against members of the JEC, TABC, DRS, and Shaarei Torah chess teams. Some games were fast paced ending in under five minutes while others took longer. In fact, one game went on until there were just two and a half minutes remaining on the clock. In the end, MTA came out with a total score of 14/14 points, making it very possible for MTA to clinch the playoff seat. The day proved successful once again for the MTA Lion Kings as they continue their season still undefeated.
