Study Night a Massive Success
by Rami Nordlicht ('16)
On Wednesday night, MTA students, faculty members, and senior members of the Arista Honors Society came together for a fantastic night of pre-finals studying. Throughout the course of the night, students were able to sit in on review sessions provided by teachers, avail themselves of the opportunity to study with an Arista tutor, and enjoy pizza and cookies provided by Arista. The event was a smashing success, as over 200 students stayed late are were able to adequately prepare for many of their upcoming midterm exams; they ended the night feeling much more confident about their performance on their upcoming tests. The participants of Study Night would like to extend a very special thank you to Mrs. Levitt, who oversaw the event, and to all of the teachers, students, and tutors who contributed to the immense productivity of the night. We look forward to holding many more successful Study Nights in the future.

Makor Chaim Week 5 Update
by Akiva Cooper ('18)
Last Friday, we had a guided tour by our madrich Ashi, of Har Herzl. We then headed over to the YU Gruss Kollel in ירושלים for one of our best Shabbatot in Israel thus far. Arriving Thursday night, we quickly davened and ate dinner, after which we had a special בלי״ץ about סור מרע (how each one of us personally try to refrain from doing bad) and עשה טוב (how we try to do good.) On Friday, in addition to Har Herzl, we went shopping in מאה שערים, where many of us bought souvenirs for our stay in Israel.
The Shabbos we spent there, which was hosted by Avi Schwartz, a student learning in Gruss, was truly inspirational. A great dinner was followed by an hour of singing in קומזיץ and during Shalosh Seudos, a גר told us his inspirational story and what made him interested in converting. A Melava Malka, with pizza and speeches by great Rabbis like Rav Dovid Miller, the Rosh Kollel in Gruss, and Rabbi Ifrah, a popular Rebbe in Yeshivat Torah Shraga, was a great way to cap off the weekend. After our Melavaeh Malka, we concluded our Motzei Shabbat in the Malchah Mall.
On Sunday morning, Mrs. Tova Rosenberg organized our visit to Rav Yehoshua Eichenstein's home. It was an honor and privilege to have Rav Eichenstein, a great Rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva of יד ארון, provide us a sichah and דברי חיזוק.
After returning to Makor Chaim for our last full week there, we went back to learning with the Israelis in the morning and studying science, English, history, and math in the afternoon. The night activities consisted of the regularly scheduled Shiur with one of our Madrichim's father's (of course with pizza), another shiur, this one by Yossi Baumol, on why certain Jewish sects deny the requirement to establish a government and live in Israel.
On Wednesday, our Tiyul day, we went to the south to swim in the עין גדי oasis and to trek up the very steep cliff of Masada. On Thursday, Rabbi Taubes came to the Yeshiva and spoke to us before joining us for Parashat Shavua. Thursday night involved a normal Mishmar. After taking our weekly test, we had another, yet nontraditional, בלי״ץ. We went to one of the classrooms and were all given a small notepad and were told to write our names on it. We then spent the next half hour passing them around and anonymously predicting where our friends will be in 20 years. Today, Friday, we learned about the everyday lives of our ancestors in Ancient Israel. We went to נאות קדומים where we saw ancient wells and olive and grape presses; we also made our own זטר. All in all, it was a great week in Israel.
Shabbat Shalom!

MTA Wrestling Lions Stay Undefeated After Win Over Lexington
by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)
On Monday, January 11th, the MTA Wrestling Team had their 5th match of the season against the Lexington High School for the Deaf. The Lexington High School is for students with hearing impairments, and require slightly altered rules when wrestling: the referee must touch the back of both wrestlers while blowing the whistle in order to stop the action. After weigh-ins, the match began and MTA received two forfeits by Lexington, resulting in an immediate lead. MTA lost their first match, but enjoyed two wins and 7 forfeits while only forfeiting one weight class for a near shut-out victory. Although the students at Lexington did have hearing impairments, they were by no means any less of a team than any of MTA's other opponents, which meant they would face a loss to the MTA Wrestling Lions, who were still undefeated at the end of the match with a record of 5-0.

MTA Wrestling Team Loses in Tight Match
by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)
Immediately following their match against the Lexington High School for the Deaf, the MTA Wrestling team faced one of their chief opponents, Long Island Lutheran. LIL took first place in the private school league that the Lions participated in last year, while the Lions took third. MTA had already beaten the previous year's second place team earlier in the season and this match could be the difference between placing first or second in the league. Because of all that was on the line, the setting was tense for both teams which were undefeated this season.
Wrestling began at the 106 lb. weight class, which LIL won by pin. LIL too won the 113 lb. weight class; this time by forfeit, and MTA won the 120 lb. weight class by forfeit. Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16) at 126 lbs. pinned his opponent in thirty seconds, tying the score after the first four of fourteen matches. LIL went on to win the next two matches at 132 and 138 lbs. before Captain Naftali Horowitz ('16) would start his 145 lb. match. Naftali dominated most of the match entering the third period with a 10-4 lead. With roughly thirty seconds left to the match, his opponent scored a take-down and immediately went for the pin. However, Nafatali held out and ended the match victorious with an extremely close score of 10-9. MTA won the 152 lb. and 172 lb. weight classes by forfeit and lost the 160 lb., 182 lb. and 195 lb. weight classes by pin. However, MTA pulled up almost tying the score when Izzy Frasco at 220 lb. won his match with a score of 3-2.
By this time, Long Island Lutheran was only leading by a few points and if MTA's heavyweight would win his match by at least 6 points, then MTA would win. However after 6 full minutes of intense high class wrestling, the match was lost by a single point with a score of 4-3. Although the Lions lost their match, it was an incredibly close one that came down to a matter of points in the last match. After losing their first match, the Lions shook hands with their rivals, packed up the mats and now plan to get back to work and return to their winning ways next Thursday, January 21st, at their next match.
