Makor Chaim Update: Week 3

On Sunday morning, after a restful "out" Shabbos spent with families and friends, the Makor Chaim students met at the famous Malcha mall and the action picked up immediately. We split into pairs and took pictures of depictions of the ten plagues, the most "Israeli" types of food, and more unusual things as part of an hour-and-a-half scavenger hunt through the mall. After a few days of regular classes (with several exciting night activities and special shiurim sprinkled in), we spent Wednesday afternoon at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. As we discussed later around the table with our Av and Em Bayit at the yeshiva, the experience was eye-opening and inspiring in many different ways. There was a profound sadness felt seeing the lost world of European Jewry and a sense of purpose instilled by the shrine in memory of the million plus children lost in the Holocaust. On Thursday night, we attended an all-night mishmar, providing an experience of learning, singing, dancing, and chicken soup!
While there is a lot to look back at from this past week, we are already looking ahead to our next week. On Friday, we will be heading into Yerushalayim to visit the Israel Museum. We will be spending Shabbos in Alon Shvut, with a Kiddush and an Oneg specially hosted for us by Ramim from Yeshivat Har Etzion. The schedule for next week also includes a tour of Tel Azeka, crawling through the Bar Kochva caves, watching and even performing shechitah, and, of course, our regular Makor Chaim program.

From Mrs. Tova Rosenberg, Director of Makor Chaim Exchange Program:
"Everyone who is working with the MTA boys have only the highest of praise for them--they are serious students actively participating in all activities and discussions. At the end of the two and a half hour tour of Yad Vashem, the tour guide complimented them on being so attentive and polite. What a credit to MTA to have such an incredible group of students! The tour was excellent and it was so nice to have had Avi and Izzy's fathers join us."
Tanach and the Jedis
by Hillel Krief ('16)

On Thursday, December 31st, in response to the revived nation-wide interest in Star Wars due to the recently released new movie directed by J.J. Abrams, Rabbi Blackstein gave a shiur on the topic of connecting Torah to "The Force." Without spoiling the movie for you: the gist of the shiur was a comparison of The Divine Force to the Divine Spirit as well as a comparison of various Jedis to major characters in Tanach. While the shiur was both entertaining and humorous, it was also informative in the realms of both Tanach and the Jedis. Rabbi Blackstein demonstrated a vast knowledge of both topics and was able to suggest many chiddushim on the ethical nature of many Star Wars filming and screening choices. All in all, the shiur was a massive success and proved to be something you can get #NowhereButHere.
College Guidance Office Program Offers Insight into Jewish Life on Campuses Across the Country
by Mendel Weintraub ('16)

On Wednesday night, the Junior and Senior classes were privileged to hear from 15 MTA alumni currently attending various colleges and universities across the country discussing Jewish life on their respective campuses. The program kicked off with Mr. Sragow, Director of College Guidance at MTA, introducing each student individually, and culminated with a huge Lion's roar from the students and their parents. Mr. Sragow also discussed his own experience while visiting a number of the represented colleges and presented his take on the matter before the attendees split into four groups to hear first-hand accounts of Jewish life at the college of their choice. The event proved to be uniquely informative, as the MTA graduates who participated had just finished at least one semester on campus, and were able to provide up-to-date information. They were able to discuss what goes on in school a daily basis, and because they are MTA alumni, to share concerns with the students at the event. There were MTA alumni from schools such as YU, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Maryland, CUNY, and many more.

The second portion of the program consisted of Mr. Hart Levine, a graduate of the Ramaz School and The University of Pennsylvania, addressing the students about his organization, Heart2Heart. Heart2Heart is an organization bringing Shabbos to over 10,000 Jewish college students across the world. Mr. Levine still directs this organization now as an affiliate of the OU. He has won numerous awards for his work, including The Jewish Week's "36 under 36" last year, he was a Community Heroes National Honoree, earned Penn Hillel's award for Innovative Jewish Leadership, a NYC PresenTense Fellowship, and others. The program proved to be both informative and insightful in its presentation of the facts. Special thanks to all of the MTA graduates, Mr. Levine, and Mr. Sragow for making this event possible.
Rabbi Kerner's Shiur Tuesday Adventure
by Yossi Dietz ('18)

This Tuesday, Rabbi Kerner's shiur took an inspiring trip to visit the Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva Gedolah of Passaic, Rabbi Meir Stern shlit"a. The talmidim were able to hear words of Torah from the Rosh Yeshiva in his home, and after the Rosh Yeshiva finished, he offered each of the boys a bracha. The boys then ate a fantastic late breakfast at a local bagel shop, "Kosher Bagel Munch."

Following this, the boys had the opportunity to do some chesed at Yad Leah, an organization that distributes clothes to people is Eretz Yisrael who unfortunately are unable to afford them on their own. The entire morning was a great and inspiring experience for all the students in the shiur.

Dr. Josef Steinhauer Enlightens Honors College
by Nathaniel Korb ('16)

This past Tuesday, the Honors College had the opportunity to hear YU Professor Josefa Steinhauer speak about Yeshiva University's Pre-Med program. Dr. Steinhauer also briefly described her research in the University's labs. An expert in her field, Dr. Steinhauer has published a renowned piece on the effects of Aspirin on male fertility. Most importantly, students in the Honors College learned all about YU's top-rated Biology program, where Dr. Steinhauer teaches.
8th Graders from Across the Tri-State Area Come To Visit
by David Pando ('16)

On Wednesday, December 30, 2015, a second group of eighth graders came from various communities around the New York metropolitan area to experience what a day at MTA is like. The program kicked off when the students arrived in buses from their respective communities at around 9:30 and were treated to a delicious breakfast consisting of hash-browns, scrambled eggs, doughnuts, and orange juice. Following breakfast, the eighth graders were divided into four groups and were guided by MTA's Student Ambassadors to sit in on actual MTA Shiurim.
During lunch, the eighth graders had the opportunity to choose an MTA extra-curricular activity to partake in. At around 1:00, the groups gathered in the lunchroom for lunch supplied by Carlos and Gabby's, followed by Minchah. After Minchah, the students again split up into their respective groups and sat in on some of MTA's esteemed general studies classes for the remaining part of the day. The exhilarating day came to a close at 4:00 with parting words from various MTA administrators, and all the students then boarded their buses, returning to their respective communities after an exciting day at MTA.
Varsity Basketball Lions Fall In OT
by Yehuda Colton ('17)

On Saturday night, December 26, MTA played JEC in what turned out to be a thrilling game. It was a game of contrasts, as MTA dominated play in the first half and led 25-16 as the second quarter came to an end. However, in the second half, JEC began to chip away. By the end of the third quarter, JEC was trailing by just 6 and limited the MTA scoring to Binyamin Buchbinder, who scored all of MTA's 9 points in that quarter (finishing with 20 points for the game). The score was tied at the end of regulation, as Ben Rabinowitz of JEC, who scored 9 of his points in the final quarter, hit a three from the right side with just 26 seconds to play, to tie it up. MTA called a timeout at this point but could not get off a decent shot as time expired. In the overtime period, MTA was limited to one foul shot and fell just short. Although the Lions did not perform as well as they would have hoped, they are looking forward to their upcoming game against Kushner in the "White Out Double Header" this coming night.
