MTA Enjoys an Unforgettable Shabbaton

This past weekend, nearly the entire student and faculty body joined together for what turned out to be a thrilling experience for all. The 4th annual MTA Yeshiva-wide Shabbaton - sponsored by the Class of 2006 in memory of David Rottenstreich ('06; Dovid Chaim ben Tzvi Akiva, a'h) - started with separate programs for the lower and upper classmen, with the lower classmen jumping over to Bounce for hours of fun and the upper classmen having the opportunity to attend the Jets-Bills game on Thursday night at Met Life Stadium. Following these events, both groups arrived at the Raleigh Hotel in upstate New York for a barbeque dinner that lasted late into the night. After a good night's sleep, Rosh Chodesh davening, and breakfast, the students were at it again - partaking in various activities including football, hiking, bowling, and mini-hockey at or near the hotel. By the time the sun had set, everyone from 9th grade to 12th had thoroghly enjoyed themselves, but the real fun had not yet even begun.
Upon the arrival of Shabbos, and the "official" start of the Shabbaton, the entire yeshiva was addressed by Rabbi Taubes who discussed what it meant to join together in unison with one's yeshiva, and Rabbi Tanchum Cohen, who gave a d'var Torah which further complemented the point. Throughout Shabbos, students, teachers, and Rebbeim had the opportunity to bond over matters both spiritual and recreational. Events such as the divrei Torah and Zemiros at the Shabbos meals led by Rabbi Soniker and MTA Seniors, the hilarious MTA Newlywed game on Friday night, the Oneg Shabbos with Rabbi Mendelson's presentation, the late night "Ask the Rabbis" session with Rabbis Schiller and Taubes, the various informal sessions and Shiurim with Rebbeim and Grade Deans, the annual game of "Assassin," and the inspiring Shalosh Seudos stories told by Rabbi Schenker, all contributed to the outstanding bonding experience. For the entire Shabbos, the Raleigh Hotel was filled with a sense of Ruach emanating from the MTA crowd as a whole, and the event culminated with Havdallah, the humorous Senior video, and spirited dancing. All in all, the Shabbaton was a huge success, and everyone can't wait for what the school has in store for us next!
Heartfelt thanks are due to all who helped put this terrific weekend together, especially Rabbi Green and Elie Hirt of our Student Activities office for all of their hard work.

Upperclassmen Visit the Jets on the Field
by: Yosef Schatz ('16)
Every football fan's favorite part of Thursday is Thursday Night Football, and what better way for a fan to spend Thursday night than at an actual NFL football game! Well, that's exactly how many MTA juniors and seniors spent last Thursday, November 12th in advance of the Shabbaton. Thanks particularly to Shuey Jacoby and Elie Hirt, the eleventh and twelfth graders were able not only to attend the Jets-Bills game that evening but also to actually go on to the field prior to the game and meet people like NFL star Randy Beverly, who played cornerback for the New York Jets in 1967-69 and who is most notably known for making two key interceptions that aided the Jets to their historic victory in Super Bowl III. Another feature that added to the experience, although some may say it was an eyesore, was the introduction of Color Rush Jerseys by the NFL, which were featured at that night's game. Despite the Jets loss to the Bills that night, the experience proved to be thrilling and something you could get #Nowherebuthere.

MTA Mountain Lions Climb Sam's Point
On Friday, November 13th, the MTA Mountain Lions Outdoors Club hiked in Sam's Point Preserve, part of Minnewaska State Park in the Catskills. Sam's Point is the highest peak in the Shawangunk range, affording a magnificent view for miles around. Also, there are the famous Ellenville Fault ice caves, which maintain their cold temperatures so well that even well into the summer ice can still be found there. The ice caves are the largest known open fault in the United States.
Seventeen students were accompanied by Rabbi Tanchum Cohen, Mr. Sragow, and MTA alum Dov Fink. Everyone had a great time, enjoying the climb, the caves, and the magnificent vistas, as an exciting part of the yeshiva-wide Shabbaton.

Debate Club Welcomes Guest Speaker
The Debate Club was very fortrunate to have Mr. Zack Rosenberg as its speaker last week to discuss how to cross examine. Mr. Rosenberg, a graduate of University of Chicago Law School, husband of our new math teacher Mrs. Newborn, and a participant in our recent Shabbaton, shared classic and newer methods of wearing down an opponent's case by employing unusual cross-examination techniques. Debate co-presidents C.J. Glicksman ('16) and Yehuda Goldberg ('17) then debated the Great Debate topic of organ transplants. They applied the suggestions given regarding cross-exam and showed the novices how to ask questions that can unhinge the opponents' case. In the past, Mr. Sragow, Mr. Pinsker, and Rabbi Brownstein have also spoken at Debate preps in their fields of expertise. The Debate Club appreciates all the teachers' support in helping the students develop greater knowledge of their Debate topics.
Our Great Debate is scheduled for Sunday, December 20. The resolution: Organ donation consent should be legally presumed.

This past Sunday, the MTA Varsity Hockey Lions took on the JEC Thunder in the Lions' Den. The matchup was especially important for the Lions, who were attempting to make up ground in the standings with a few divisional victories. Despite outplaying the Thunder for the vast majority of the game, the Lions found themselves deadlocked in a scoreless tie after the third period buzzer sounded. The Lions were determined to solve the resilient JEC goaltender and did just that when Yosef Stern ('16) hammered home a rebound to give the Lions an exciting 1-0 victory in overtime. We would like to extend a shout-out to goalie Max Herskowitz on an outstanding shutout effort and we look forward to further success in two big games over the coming weekend.
On Thursday night, the MTA Varsity Hockey Lions faced off against the Frisch Cougars. Returning to action after an exhilarating overtime victory, the Lions were hoping to build on their momentum and continue their winning streak. Unfortunately, Frisch was ready for the challenge and was able to ambush the Lions with a few first period goals. Although the Lions were gradually able to step up their level of play, they could not recover from the early deficit and lost 6-0. The Lions will look to resume their winning ways when they play the Ramaz Rams on Saturday night in the Lion's Den.

On Thursday, many students gathered in the library during lunchtime for a special "Likrat Shabbat" kumzits. Students attended in order to enhance their Shabbos spirit, have a chance to connect to Hashem, or just to sing. Rebbeim and students played guitar, while others put their arms around each other and simply joined in the singing. It was truly an inspiring event that followed last week's unforgettable Shabbaton, as we look to keep the spirit going strong throughout the year.
