College Bowl Fairs Extremely Well In First Meet
by Rami Nordlicht ('16)

On Thursday, the MTA College Bowl Dandy Lions traveled to Heschel for their first meet of the year. The JV team soundly took care of business, winning all four games they played against Heschel, Ramaz, Flatbush, and Magen David. We would like to extend a shout-out to sophomore Noam Putterman, who answered clutch questions in overtime to give the Dandy Lions a hard-earned victory over Heschel. The Varsity team also fared well, winning their matches against Flatbush and Ramaz while losing a nail-biter to Westchester. We would also like to extend a shot-out to senior Mendel Weintraub who nearly single-handedly defeated Ramaz with his epic spree of correct responses. Both JV and Varsity look to be contenders for the championship and we look forward to another successful year of MTA college bowl.
"Names Not Numbers" Hears From Leading Holocaust Expert
by Eli Kahn ('16)

This Monday, the Names Not Numbers program and the entire senior class was privileged to meet with Dr. Michael Berenbaum and hear an informative presentation about filming documentaries and about Kristallnacht, the 77th anniversary of which was commemorated that day. Dr. Berenbaum is a renowned professor, writer, and film-maker in  the world of Jewish and Holocaust history, best known for his roles and contributions to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Research Institute. The session served both to inform the group on the era of Nazi anti-Semitism and to develop techniques that would later be applied to the documentaries which the students would make. As Dr. Bernbaum put it: "it is our responsibility to document the words of the survivors, as we are the last generation that will be granted this tremendous opportunity". Dr. Berenbaum referenced numerous cases in which he applied these techniques to both teach the story of the individual survivor and to move the crowd emotionally. All in all, the session was successful in its attempt to educate the senior class on the matter at hand.

Dr. Berenbaum's speech can be heard here.
Reporter Meets With "Names Not Numbers"
by David Schmidt ('16)

On Thursday, November 5th 2015, the Names Not Numbers program met with journalist and reporter Catherine Prince from Columbia University to discuss different interview techniques that would be applied to the interviews. Ms. Prince delved into the matter of discussion by openiing with a realistic scenario and qustioned the group on how they would respond. The discussion gradually evolved from a lecture into an actual interview with Ms. Prince. The Names Not Numbers participants are grateful to Mrs. Tova Rosenberg for organizing the event.
Prospective Students and Families Get a Glimpse of the MTA Experience
by Max Landsberg ('16)

The MTA Open House was a phenomenal success. More than 500 visitors sat in Lamport auditorium as Rabbi Taubes, Shuey Jacoby, and Daniel Mirsky ('16) spoke about our school's excellence. Before the speeches, an incredible video produced by Shimmy Socol ('16) was shown that highlighted the uniqueness of the MTA expereince. After the main program, the guests walked through MTA's hallways and classes, learning about our rich history and vibrant programming. The event culminated in the curricular fair, where parents and prospective students had one on one discussions about the school with our incredible faculty. Our student ambassadors worked hard to ensure that everything ran smoothly, and, as Admissions Director Avi Matanky put it, "I am incredibly proud of our faculty, and our students - they are, after all, the best proof of MTA's excellence." We look forward to another successful year of attracting the best boys from around the region, and around the world!
Alumni Organize Siyum For Former Librarian's Brother

Walking through Central Park a few weeks ago, BJ Frenkel ('05) bumped into Mr. Lenny Wetzler, the former MTA Librarian who retired in 2010 after many years at the school. He was saddened to learn that Mr. Wetzler's identical twin brother, Peter, who often visited MTA, passed away almost a year ago.

With Peter's first yartzeit coming up in just 2 weeks on the 18th of Kislev, BJ then took it upon himself to organize a siyum - sending out an email to many alumni asking them to sign up to learn.

The plan is to make a Siyum on Sunday night, November 29th, 8 pm, place TBD, most probably somewhere in Queens.

If you would be interested in helping learn li'iluy nishmas Peter, Yitzchak ben Mordechai, please click here to sign up on the google form. The goal is to learn one Seder of Mishnayos first (Nezikin) and fill up more as people sign up. The Google Doc has separate tabs for each Seder and is divided up by Perek. Additionally, when signing up to learn, please indicate if you plan on attending the Siyum. You can sign up here.
