MTA Lions Visit Columbia's Den
by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)

On Monday, November 2nd 2015, the Academy News Editors in Chief and yearbook staff traveled 4 miles south to Columbia University for the 76th annual Scholastic Press Association Fall Conference. Upon arrival, each student was supplied with a schedule of sessions to choose from, each of which would aid them through the process of composing their publication. These sessions covered the entire spectrum of journalism, from cryptography to humor, each with their respective goals. During these sessions, the MTA students worked hands on with New York City's best professors, journalists, and editors, some of which have written for the New York Times and similar publications. After the first two sessions, the students took a lunch break to eat, explore the University's campus, and mingle with some of the brightest high school students in the nation that shared similar interests with them.

Following the break, everyone congregated back into various classrooms, auditoriums and lecture halls across campus for more lessons that would both intrigue and educate them. One class that was of particular interest to the students was the editors meeting, in which MTA's yearbook and newspaper editors joined the ranks of some of the greatest in the nation, and examined award winning papers and yearbooks to derive ideas from. After the fifth and final session, all the students returned to the main auditorium for closing remarks and information on the next conference. All in all, the trip served to improve this year's and all the following years' Academy News and yearbooks, and succeeded in doing so while the students enjoyed themselves.

Special thanks to Mrs. Hadassah Siegfried, who organized and accompanied the students on the trip.
NNN Trip to Jewish Heritage Museum
by: Hillel Krief ('16)

On Wednesday, November 4th 2015, students in the Names Not Numbers Holocaust documentary program, this year joined by the rest of the senior class, travelled to Battery Park in Lower Manhattan for the annual visit to the famed Jewish Heritage Museum. Upon arrival, the students were greeted by the museum staff and given a basic overview of World War II and the Holocaust. This lesson smoothly transitioned into a theological workshop in which students delved into the Jewish life during the time and even analyzed a number of ethical wills, written as a last message to family members whom the writers assumed they would bever see again. Before continuing their journey, the students were served a scrumptious lunch, at which time they reflected upon their previous discussions. Afterwards, students in groups of 12 were led through the museum which consisted of a chronological display of events beginning from 1933, when Hitler came to power, until the emancipation of the Jews. Each tour guide developed a strategy to educate his respective group; for example, putting emphasis on certain individual stories for the Names Not Numbers participants. Upon the culmination of the trip, the entire senior class gathered just across the river from Ellis Island with the Statue of Liberty in sight to articulate the idea of religious freedom for Jews today. Special thanks to Mrs. Rosenberg, creator of the NNN program, for organizing and arranging the trip, and to the Rebbeim and Mr. Dobrick who accompanued us.
Senior Arista Members Enjoy Brunch
by Mikey Hizami ('16)

November 2nd, 2015 served as an opportunity for the Senior Arista members to reflect upon past achievements, such as the recent blood drive, and plan for the future, all while enjoying an appetizing brunch. What made this event different than any other Arista meeting was the unorthodox manner in which the program was run. Students that otherwise would not address the group took the stand to voice their opinions, rather than just listening to the presidents of the society. Speakers included David Schmidt, CJ Glicksman, Ezra Epstein, and Rami Nordlicht, each of whom conveyed in an elaborate manner his experience as members of the exclusive society so far, and his proposals for the future. In the end, the meeting proved successful, both for the innovative method of presentation and lavish food that complimented it.
Rabbi Mordechai Becher Enlightens MTA

MTA's 12th Grade Jewish History class was privileged to host Rabbi Mordechai Becher this past week, on Monday, November 2nd. Rabbi Becher teaches at Yeshiva University and is a sought after and renowned lecturer on Torah, Jewish History, and Jewish Philosophy, having traveled around the world teaching these subjects.

Rabbi Becher taught the students about the history of Prague from the 10th Century until the Holocaust, and noted that aside from the years of World War II, a minyan was held in prominent Prague synagogues for centuries. The class presentation focused on personalities, locations, and ideas that were specific to the Prague Jewish Community. Some of the personalities discussed included the Maharal (R' Yehuda Loewe), the Tosafos Yom Tov (R' Yom Tov Lipman Heller), the Noda B'Yehuda (R' Yechezkel Landau), and Franz Kafka. Many of the structures and buildings discussed still stand today, as Prague was not bombed during the Holocaust, and in fact, many believe that this city was intended to serve as a Nazi museum regarding the extinct Jews after the Holocaust. Rabbi Becher provided insights into the lives of Prague Jews throughout the centuries, through pictures, stories, humor, and Torah ideas, all of which gave us a larger historical perspective on this remarkable Jewish community.

This visit was the second in a series of guest lectures for the 12th Grade Modern Jewish History class organized by Mr. Bernstein.
Sports Update

Varsity Hockey (by Rami Nordlicht '16): On Sunday, November 1st, the MTA Varsity Hockey Lions faced off against the Westchester Wolverines. The Lions were coming off their first win of the season and were looking to extend their winning streak. After the puck dropped, the Lions came out flying and did not relent, scoring at a torrent pace throughout the game. By the time the final buzzer sounded, the score was 13-1. The large margin of victory was testament to the Lions' complete and utter domination on both sides of the court. We would like to extend a shout-out to Jeremy Borgen, Yosef Stern, and Yehuda Benscher on their fantastic multi-goal efforts and to defensemen Ari Hagler and Yitzy Weiss on scoring their first goals of the young season.

Varsity Basketball: On Sunday, the Lions took on the Hillel Heat in the Max, and it was a game of the ages. Down for most of the game, the Lions clawed their way back and took a lead in the fourth quarter. However, that lead would dissipate and it was Yehuda Colton's last second tip-in that tied the game, sending it to overtime! The Lions then took control the rest of the way, winning by a final score of 54-46.

On Tuesday, the Lions traveled to Livingston to take on the Kushner Cobras. The Lions cruised to victory there, winning 45-19.

We look forward to continued success!
Time Management Sessions For Freshmen
The freshman class welcomed Mrs. Tamar Sheffey, our Director of Guidance, into their shiur classrooms this past week to run a session on Time Management and Organization. Students were given the chance to analyze their personal level of time control and organization.  As the conversations deepened in the classrooms, students discussed why being organized and managing time is helpful and necessary. Some answers included: "It helps you remember what you have to accomplish, decreases stress, helps you reach goals and allows you to find time for fun, relaxation and most importantly, sleep." They touched upon the "tools of the trade," pointing to planners, online calendars, the myhomework app, google classroom and Renweb.  They made note of the "whens" of studying and making the most of the evenings, Fridays, Sundays and even Motzaei Shabbos! Lastly, they talked about fitting in breaks and fun to keep yourself sane through all of the work.  Students walked out with handouts reinforcing the lessons and are always welcome in any Guidance Counselor's office to continue the conversation!
