Arista Takes the Lead on Chesed

This past Monday, October 29, 2015, MTA held its first blood drive of the year. The event was run by Shalom Stieglitz ('16) and Aryeh Ness ('16) of the Arista Honors Society, who dedicated much time to organizing and advertising the drive. The blood drive, which was held in the Morgenstern Dormitory basement, extended from as early as 11:30 in the morning until as late as 6:00 at night. Throughout the day, MTA students and faculty alike journeyed to "the Morg" in order to give the gift of life. Those who elected to donate blood were run through a series of steps in order to maximize safety for both the donor and potential receiver. After donating, the donors were supplied with a plethora of drinks and snacks to recuperate.

The drive was a great success and close to 50 people donated that day, a new all time record for an MTA blood drive. We would like to thank Shalom and Aryeh for their hard work.
MTA LEAD Kicks Off!

On Monday, October 26th, Dean Michael Strauss of Yeshiva University's Sy Syms School of Business came by MTA to kick off the MTA LEAD program. In addition to his role at YU, Dean Strauss, a former senior executive at American Express, also serves as CEO of BSafe Electrix. The MTA library filled up as he explained the details of the program and the nature of entrepreneurship.

MTA LEAD, now in it's 4th year, is an incredible partnership between MTA and SSSB in which high school students are able to work together to develop business ideas, are provided with workshops and lectures from SSSB professors and other business leaders, receive personal mentoring from SSSB students, and ultimately are able to pitch their business idea to a panel composed of respected business leaders. Additionally, high school students are invited to participate in the Kukin Lecture Series where they have the opportunity to hear from a variety of leaders in industry; just last year, students heard from Madison Square Garden EVP and General Counsel Lawrence Burian, amongst others.

In a new twist this year, a special networking lunch is planned shortly to allow business inclined students the opportunity to partner with other like-minded students and share their ideas and skills to help with product development.

Many thanks to Dean Strauss and the Syms school for the continuous support!
Hatzioni Brings in Regional Director of Stand With Us

On Wednesday, October 28, 2015, the MTA student body was privileged to hear from Mr. Paul Friedman, northeast Regional Director of Stand With Us. The event, which was organized by Hatzioni Treasurer Hillel Krief ('16), focused upon the current crisis in Israel. After a brief introduction and an analysis of the students' areas of interest, the floor was opened to any questions students had regarding Israel, anti-Semitism and Stand With UsMr. Friedman, who was eager to answer everyone's questions, delivered an enthusiastic outline of the situation at hand, while simultaneously educating the group on modern Israeli history. The program lasted through lunch and served as an educational dialogue; by all accounts it was a huge success and it proved to be both enjoyable and informative for everyone. Hatzioni and the entire MTA student body would like to thank Hillel Krief ('16) for organizing the event, and Mr. Friedman for coming to speak.
Hockey: Week One
by Yehuda Alter ('16)

This past Saturday night marked the beginning of the MTA varsity hockey season, as the Lions faced the SAR Sting at home. It was a hard and physical game, but a string of four quick goals near the end of the first period proved to be too much for the Lions to handle, as they lost 6-0. MTA didn't find much success a couple days later as they played in SAR and lost 5-0 in similar fashion. The Lions went into this past Wednesday against the North Shore Stars looking for not only their first win, but also their first goal. MTA came out flying, dominating the first period and generating plenty of chances, but the elusive goal did not come. The Lions didn't give up, however; and finally MTA got on the scoreboard with a great goal from Yosef Stern in the second. The goal scoring was contagious, and not long after, Rami Nordlicht put one in for a 2-0 MTA lead. Later in the third period, Zach Borgen scored off a rebound and quickly after that Rami got his second goal of the night, securing a 4-1 MTA victory. Hoping to build off their recent win, the Lions are excited for what is sure to be another action-packed season of hockey.
Yeshiva Fellowship Learns First Hand About the Laws of an Eruv

This week, the freshmen participating in the Yeshiva Fellowship had the z'chus to learn about the laws and requirements of an eruv from Rabbi Yosef Bechhofer, who is an MTA Rebbe and a renowned expert in hilchos eruvin, having written several seforim on the topic. Following Rabbi Bechhofer's shiur, the students traveled to examine the Passaic, NJ eruv in order to apply their knowledge on the matter. The students went around Passaic, along with Rabbi Danto, director of the Yeshiva Fellowship, Rabbi Bechhofer, and Rabbi Micah Shotkin of Passaic, who has dedicated much time and effort to maintaining the community's eruv for the past several years.

During their excursion, the students carefully examined specific details of the eruv with which they were familiar in order to check for potential problems that could threaten the validity of the eruv. Through this trip, the students were able to learn about eruvin in general and even got to use some of Rav Shotkin's special equipment which he brought along to examine the eruv, such as an optical plummet to check if a particular part of the eruv is exactly in place.

All in all the students had a great time learning about hilchos eruvin, especially since  they were then able to apply that knowledge in a practical setting.
Debate Team Holds First Novice Debate
by Yedidyah Schechter ('19)

This past Tuesday night, the debate team held its first novice debate of the year. The novices were all very nervous, being that it was their first debate ever. Leading up to the debate,  Mrs. Levitt, MTA's dedicated debate coach, held lunch practices where she taught them the rules of debate and gave them useful tips. The topic of the debate was whether or not Donald Trump should be president. After a week of lunch meetings and preparation, the debate finally came.

Instead of leaving school when the bell rang, the debaters put on their suits and headed for the library. After dinner, consisting of Lake Como pizza, each novice met with his partner and they went to their individual rooms, where they would debate against another set of novices. The experienced debaters judged and kept time for each debate. Though it was indeed their first debate and they were very anxious coming in, the novices all stepped up to the plate and debated very well. They are excited for future debates where they can further develop their skills.
