JV Basketball Advances To Semis On Buzzer Beater

by Dan Libesman ('18)

On Thursday night, the Junior Varsity MTA Lions took on the HAFTR Hawks in the quarter-finals of the MYHSAL playoffs. MTA came in as a lower seed, but in what is considered a stronger conference than HAFTR, so there was a high confidence level for our Lions going in. HAFTR seemed to be playing with a stronger drive to win and was leading for most of the game, but Binyamin Buchbinder and point guard Marc Giahn carried MTA back into it. Binyamin had 12 points while Marc was stellar from the 3-point range. Josh Klein was tremendous defensively, guarding HAFTR's number one threat, Jason Mishkin, and ending the game with 5 blocked shots. The main highlight of the game was the clutch 3-pointer by Binyamin to tie the game up at 32-32 with just 49 seconds remaining, only to be topped when he hit a game winning three with just a few seconds on the clock. Binyamin's heroics will go down in the MTA record books if the JV Lions go on to win the championship.

Their next obstacle: SAR, in the semi-finals.

An Incredible Junior Trip

As the Juniors made their way into school on Wednesday morning, there was a special energy in advance of their annual grade trip. After davening, the students boarded the coach busses and headed straight to Connecticut Sportsplex where they had time to play laser tag, whirlyball, and football in the massive domed field at the facility. After a couple of hours, pizza was served for lunch and the boys davened Minchah.

It was then back to the busses to travel to a local ice rink, which was specially set up for the MTA traditional sport of broomball. 6 teams duked it out in this specialized sport that involves running around the ice with broom-like sticks and attempting to knock a ball into an opponent's net.

From broomball, the students headed to Congregation Bnai Shalom in Waterbury, CT where they heard an inspiring pre-Purim message from Rabbi Daniel Kalish, the Menahel of Yeshiva Ateres Shmuel of Waterbury. They then had dinner and headed to the Coco Key Water Resort. After quickly settling into their rooms, the boys headed to the on-site indoor water park for hours of fun. At 11:30, they got together in a reserved conference room for a late night BBQ, after which Rabbi Mendelson, with help from our visiting Israeli exchange students, led an incredible kumsitz. It was terrific to see so many students from across all the various shiurim participating and helping lead songs. While Rabbi Mendelson headed out at about 1:45 am, many of the boys carried on with the kumsitz until close to 3 am!

Fortunately for all, there was a later wake up on Thursday morning! After davening, breakfast, and brief shiurim from all the students' respective rebbeim, the group headed out to the snowy hills of Connecticut for hours of snow tubing down multiple different tubing slopes. After this stop, which included both lunch and snacks, the Class of 2016 finally headed back to MTA, exhausted but closer to each other as a Lions unit. Special thanks to Rabbi Green for leading another incredible MTA trip, to Mr. Gillers for his help planning, to Grade Dean/Mashgiach Rabbi Danto for all of his help organizing, and to Rabbi Gopin, Rabbi Mendelson and Shuey for participating.

Raziel Siegman ('17) Receives Award of Excellence

Raziel Siegman ('17) recently attended the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, sponsored by FutureDocs.com. Because of his outstanding performance at that conference, he received their Award of Excellence.

The Congress of Future Medical Leaders seeks to identify the physicians of the future and expose them to the current leaders in the field. At this conference, Raziel had the honor to learn from personalities such as the US Surgeon General, Rear Admiral Boris Lushniak, and Dr. Francis Collins, the Director of the National Institutes of Health. He also had the opportunity to see surgery performed live and question the surgeon in real time, as well as rub shoulders with the most advanced teens in the country.

Students interested in future conferences may be nominated if they have a 90 average or above and receive a recommendation from Mr. Sragow.

No Talking For Tehilla Update

Baruch Hashem, our tefillos and our yeshiva-wide effort to refrain from talking during davening have helped Tehilla advance nicely post surgery.

Thank G-d, the doctors are happy with her progress. Please see the attached video of Tehilla walking !!!!

There is no doubt that our commitment to not talking during davening has played a role!!! To all who participate, Chazak Ve'Ematz - let's keep it up!!!!

Junior Arista Candidates Launch "Each One Teach One" to Help Students

The Junior Arista candidates have created a new system for student tutors to meet with students who need help in any subject area. The program is entitled "Each One Teach One". Beginning this Monday, each morning during breakfast, tutors for all subjects will be available in the library. Any student who needs help can take his breakfast food there and find a Junior Arista member.

An appointment is not necessary; students can simply show up and receive guidance in Math, Science, History, English or Gemara.

Varsity Hockey Falls In Quarter-Final Playoff Action

The Varsity Lions headed to Long Island to take on the top seeded HAFTR Hawks in their MYHSAL quarterfinal playoff match-up. This game was hyped to be close and exciting, and didn't disappoint. MTA fans packed the HAFTR gym; our thanks to Mr. Dobrick for arranging a fan bus.

From the start, the MTA Lions didn't let up. They fired shot after shot at the HAFTR goalie but they just couldn't find the back of the net. Assistant Captain Ezra Quint, who played the best game of his MTA career, created several high quality scoring chances, but the first period ended with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

In the second period, HAFTR was called for interference and MTA headed to the power play for their first - and ultimately only - time of the night. Captains Zev Markowitz and Ami Rosenfeld pestered the goalie with long shots with the few opportunities that they had, but the Hawks did a good job keeping the ball out of the zone. Just as the power play expired, a HAFTR offenseman put back a rebound to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

MTA was not to be denied much longer. Captain Markowitz took a long wrist shot from behind mid-court and beat the HAFTR goalie high to tie it up; the Lions were back in the game. The period ended 1-1 thanks to goalie Shuki Weinstein who was spectacular throughout the night.

In the final period, the Lions again did all they could to try to score but the HAFTR goalie made some unbelievable saves. With just 4:40 remaining in the game, the Hawks scored on a rebound to take the lead, and then two and a half minutes later, HAFTR scored again on a rebound to seal the win, 3-1.

The Lions played incredibly well in a tough game, but their season came to an end. Despite the disappointment, this team made big strides both on and off the court over the course of the season. Good luck to the MTA Lions next year!

Mock Trial Team Argues To Defend

On Tuesday night, the defense of the YUHSB Mock Trial team competed against the Browning School. The case regarded Casey Cheatham, the CFO of Pearson Precisions Inc. and treasurer of a school fundraising organization, who allegedly stole tens of thousands of dollars from an organizational fund raiser. There was no clear evidence, but witness Taylor Templeton claims that there should have been over $70,000 more profit from the games of chance alone.

It was a very heated match and both teams did extremely well. After some intense testimonies and examinations, MTA lost by just two points.

A great job, though, was done by witnesses Mendel Weintraub (Dr. Jesse James), Yishai Eisenberg (Alex Aldrich), and Shimmy Mandelbaum (Taylor Templeton) with their incredible presentations. Congratulations also to lawyers CJ Glicksman, Ben-Tzion Zuckier, and Avraham Tsikhanovski on their superb performances.

MTA's next match will be as the plaintiffs in March. If they win that match, they will continue on to the next round. Thank you to coach Noah Pollack, Senior Attorney at the Special Funds Conservation Committee, for his passionate coaching.

Rabbi Axelrod's Shiur Helps Out at Masbia

By Noam Josse ('17)

On Thursday, Rabbi Axelrod's 10th grade Shiur had the privilege to go to Masbia in Queens and help out in feeding the needy. The shiur split up into two groups, one group which helped package a room full of onions, and potatoes, and another which, using their Russian speaking skills, helped get people in need the food they needed. In a couple of hours, the boys were able to package a significantly large amount of vegetables. The faculty at Masbia said that no group had ever packaged so many vegetables in such a short amount of time! The Masbia freezer was filled with sacks of potatoes and onions, and by the end of the day, the freezer was empty. Meanwhile, upstairs some of the students who could speak Russian were able to use this to help out getting people's orders. Many of Masbia's customers don't speak English so it is a comfort for them to find someone who speaks their native language.

The experience was very meaningful, and heartfelt, and it taught Rabbi Axelrod's talmidim the meaning of the mitzvah of chesed.

Honoring MTA and The Bard

On Thursday afternoon, Gedaliah Zemel ('15) represented YUHSB in the semi-final round of the English-Speaking Union's National Shakespeare Competition, held at the Stephen Schwartzmann branch of the New York Public Library on 42nd Street, with participants from public, private and charter schools around Greater New York. Accompanied by Mrs. Levitt and Ms. Lewis, Gedaliah gave a powerful rendition of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice (Act I, Scene iii), and Sonnet 138, bringing the audience to laughter and powerful applause. Coached by Mrs. Levitt with feedback from Rabbi Brownstein, Dr. Taylor and Ms. Lewis, Gedaliah deserves hearty congratulations for his hard work and impressive talent. Bravo!

Happenings

Last Shabbos, Rabbi Mendelson held an inspiring shiur shabbaton by his home in Brooklyn. On Friday, the boys visited the Living Torah Museum and learned some karate on Motzei Shabbos
A Note from Current Madrich and Yeshiva College Student Avi Rosalimsky
I have the opportunity to learn with an amazing group of freshman from Rabbi Richter's shiur. The most amazing part of this program for me is the opportunity that I have to really get to know these boys and to forge a lasting relationship with them. Therefore, in addition to the learning that we do (because Torah is certainly something that brings people together), I also try to spend some time "chilling" with them outside of the classroom/learning setting. For example, last week, I took some of the guys to Carvel and last night, I took them out for dinner in the YU cafeteria. I thank MTA for giving me this special opportunity and I look forward to maintaining a relationship with these guys throughout their years in MTA and for many years to come!
