MTA Chagigas Stereotypes | Purim Chagiga 2015
MTA Chagigas Stereotypes | Purim Chagiga 2015

Thursday's Rosh Chodesh Adar programming kick-started the festive season of simcha for the whole MTA family. The previous night, the visiting Makor Chaim boys decorated the halls and Library with awesome decorations, helping to set the tone for the day, and they then helped lead a special Rosh Chodesh davening in Lamport Auditorium in the morning, featuring lots of singing and dancing during Hallel.

At the Chagiga down in the Lions' Den, following breakfast which included an assortment of hamentaschen, our own David Ross' Shir Soul Band got the ruach started with quite an electric set of simcha music. At one point, the circles of dancing kept spiraling inwards, creating a mesmerizing effect. Each shiur had the center circle at one point or another, with the Seniors and their rebbeim leading the charge.

We then rested for some words of Torah from Rabbi Taubes and from Yeshiva University S'gan Mashgiach Rabbi Josh Blass (formerly a rebbe at MTA ), who shared inspiring thoughts about true simcha and how we can achieve it.

Following the Divrei Torah, the award wining MTA Chorus sang a very cool arrangement of "Salam/Shalom" to the whole audience's delight. Next up was the MTA band with some rockin' talent, featuring solos by David Boim ('15), Josh Appel ('17), and Emmett Weisz ('15). Yoni Mandelbaum ('16) held the beat on the drums. Our band segued straight back into set number two of dancing with Shir Soul

After another strong set of dancing and "shtick," we were treated to a hilarious video about Chagiga stereotypes produced by the Senior class, with the help of Shimmy Socol ('16).

The festivities continued in the evening when everyone was treated to chulent and kugel before mishmarwhere the singing and awesome spirit continued.

More is planned as we continue towards Purim. Stay tuned!

On Wednesday night the JV Basketball Lions took on the JEC Thunder in the first round of the playoffs. "The Max" was packed and the fans were ready to cheer on MTA, the favorite in this matchup. After an heartpounding introduction of the Lions team - featuring smoke and lasers - the Lions were ready to roar.

Unfortunately, the Lions got off to a slow start as JEC shot lights-out from the field, quieting the MTA crowd. The Lions went into halftime down 21-17.

That's when the Lions turned things around. After going on a scoring streak, regaining control of the game and eventually taking the lead, the Lions won by a commanding score of 43-34.

MTA Wrestling Takes Third At Wittenberg

by Yaakov Kurlantzick('16) and Naftali H. Horowitz('16)

The MTA Lions, having placed seventh last year, astounded the Yeshiva wrestling world by taking third place at the 20th Annual Wittenberg Wrestling Invitational Tournament. With two wrestlers taking first place, two taking second place, two taking third place, one taking fourth place, two taking fifth place, the rest of the team winning multiple matches and two of the captains being awarded the only two prestigious awards given to the best wrestlers at the competition, the LIONS had an incredible team this year.

Though we are losing two amazing senior wrestlers, we are hoping to see many new aspiring champions be welcomed to the team over the next year. Taking third place was an amazing accomplishment for the MTA LIONS and with eight soon-to-be seniors, a score of juniors and sophomores, and future freshman; we plan on taking first next year at the Annual Wittenberg Tournament.

Below are the results:

  • MTA placed 3rd as a team out of 15 teams from all over the US
  • Naftali Horowitz ('16) placed 1st in the 138lb weight class and received the Most Outstanding Wrestler
  • Award Michael Amuev ('15) placed 1st in the 145lb weight class and received the Dominator Award
  • Yosef Kurlantzick ('16) placed 2nd in the 152lb weight class
  • Yaakov Kurlantzick ('16) placed 2nd in the 170lb weight class
  • Izzy Frasko ('16) placed 3rd in the 220lb weight class
  • Aron Fried ('16) placed 3rd in the 285lb weight class
  • Akiva Axel ('16) placed 4th in the 120lb weight class
  • Noah Dure ('18) placed 5th in the 195lb weight class
  • Alex Knapp ('17) placed 5th in 285lb weight class

Sophomores Elect New Student Council Representatives

The Sophmore class gathered in the library this week to hear from their peers who were running to serve as the Student Council Representatives.

All candidates made their pitch to be elected. The students then voted, and Ariel Manakhimov and Reuven Penn were victorious.

Congratulations and thanks to all that ran!

MTA and Syms Business Students Kick Off Mentoring Over Lunch

On Wednesday, MTA LEAD students who submitted business ideas were paired up with students from YU's Sy Syms School of Business who will be mentoring them over the course of the semester, helping them develop their ideas in advance of the MTA students' "Shark Tank" presentation later in the year in front of the program's Executive Council of business leaders. In order to facilitate this initial meeting, mentors and students, as well as Michael Strauss, Associate Dean, Assistant to the YU Provost, and Entrepreneur in Residence of the Business School, got together in the MTA lunchroom for a pizza luncheon. Students and mentors exchanged ideas and are looking forward to regularly staying in touch over the course of the semester.

Gedaliah Zemel ('15) To Compete In Shakespeare Competition

We are very excited for Gedaliah Zemel ('15), who will compete next Thursday in a Shakespeare Competition at the New York Public Library. Gedaliah will present alongside students from fifty other private and public schools, and will regale the crowd with a monologue from "The Merchant of Venice." He was artfully coached by Ms. Lewis and Mrs. Levitt, who are both students and teachers of the Bard. We wish Gedaliah much luck, for all the world's a stage!
