MTA To Sponsor Community Learning on Thanksgiving

We are pleased to announce that our Rebbeim will once again be presenting special Shiurim on the morning of Thanksgiving Day in several of the area communities in which our students live. It is a wonderful opportunity to engage in serious Talmud Torah even on a vacation day; parents are invited as well. Specific details, including exact times and locations, will be announced and publicized shortly. Please plan to join us!

A Special Request From Yerushalayim

Dear Parents and Students,

In the wake of this week's terrible tragedy in Yerushalayim, the widows and families of the four men, z'l, who were murdered by terrorists while davening Shacharis in their neighborhood Shul are reaching out to the broader Jewish community and asking that we all dedicate this coming Shabbos, Parashas Toldos, as a day on which to display unconditional love for all our fellow Jews by refraining from argumentative conversation, slander, and gossip. An English translation of the letter, signed by the four widows, appears below; a copy of the original Hebrew is attached. I believe that it would be most appropriate for all of us who are affiliated with MTA to honor their request and participate in this worthwhile endeavor.

May we be privileged to share only besoros tovos, good news, in the future.

Rabbi Michael Taubes

A Request from the Bereft Widows and Families,

With hearts broken and melted with tears over the spilled blood of the kedoshim - the heads of our families, may Hashem avenge their blood.

We turn to our brethren, the whole nation of Israel in every place they are found, and we ask: Let us all unite to elicit the mercy of heaven upon us, and let us accept upon ourselves to increase love and brotherhood between friends, between congregations, and between communities.

We request that each and every individual try to accept upon him or herself, at the time of Kabbolas Shabbos, to dedicate the day of Shabbos Kodesh Parashas Toldos (Erev Rosh Chodesh Kislev) as a day of unconditional love, a day on which to refrain from divisive and argumentative conversation and from speaking any lashon hara or rechilus.

May this serve to provide a great elevation for the souls of the fathers of our families who were slaughtered in the sanctification of His blessed Name.

May Hashem look down from above, see our affliction, wipe away our tears, and declare an end to our suffering. And may we merit seeing the arrival of the Mashiach speedily in our days, Amen.

Signed with broken and shattered hearts,

Chayah Levine, Breine Goldberg, Yakova Kupinsky, Bashi Twersky

"Reaching New Heights" On The Annual MTA Yeshiva-Wide Shabbaton

Reaching New Heights! | MTA Shabbaton 2014 Recap
Reaching New Heights! | MTA Shabbaton '14 Recap

A school year that began with the the customary day-to-day routine of learning and extra-curricular activities received quite the jolt this past Shabbos on YUHSB's Annual Shabbaton. In what was deemed "a weekend to deepen the roots of our relationships with friends and Rebbeim" by Rabbi Richter in his pre-Shabbaton address, all four grades bonded in a spiritual and enjoyable way.

After jumping to new heights in a literal and physical sense on Thursday evening at Bounce, the students arrived at the Raleigh Hotel and were treated to a late night barbecue. On Friday morning, students participated in one of three activities - hiking, football, or bowling. The hikers got the earliest start, leaving after an early Shacharis. The football players were welcomed to a snow-covered field, and enjoyed slipping and sliding their way to the end zone. The bowlers headed to the bowling alley just a short while later.

After lunch and a few more activities, members of all four grades prepared for Shabbos. Kabbolas Shabbos, led by Rabbi Axelrod, ended with lively singing and dancing by everyone in the Beis Medrash. A Dvar Torah from Rabbi Soniker and Maariv were followed by a delicious meal, including zemiros and student Divrei Torah, Shiurim with individual Rebbeim, grade activities, and an uplifting Tisch. A voluntary "Ask the Rabbi" session featuring Rabbi Schiller and Rabbi Taubes attracted many students and lasted well into the night.

There was no letdown on Shabbos day, as a beautiful davening which included a Dvar Torah from Rabbi Taubes was followed by lunch, learning, bonding time, and a spiritual Seudah Shlishis, at which Rabbi Schenker presented an inspiring Dvar Torah

After Havdalah, the students packed quickly and returned for the much anticipated melaveh malka. The senior video drew laughs from the crowd, after which Mr. Yosef Gillers announced the arrival of MTA Spirit Month! The extended version of Spirit Week began with dancing and singing led by Rabbi Taubes, Rabbio Cohen and a keyboard player, while pizza and ice cream were served on the side.

A weekend that was filled with Ruach, learning, lots of fun activities and bonding time and ended with singing and dancing and the exciting announcement of Spirit Month was indeed the ultimate tool to help the students "deepen their roots".
MTA Spirit Month Has Begun!

On Motzaei Shabbos at the annual MTA Shababton, after the hilarious senior video, the student council surprised everyone  with the announcement of "Spirit Month" - 4+ weeks of grade competitions, banners, and videos, and an extra emphasis on school spirit with pep rallies and special fan buses every week for various sports games. There will be school-wide events that build on school spirit, and some toying with the Hogwarts theme - in connection with which students received special tee-shirts, varying from grade to grade - because, after all, our school building is a castle! The seniors will also be selling brand new 5775 edition MTA apparel with their Spirit Sale. There will be special community tisches as well, spreading the ruach of the MTA family. Spirit Month will culminate in our annual Chanukah Chagigah, where each grade will present their projects and we will draw the winners of the annual raffle.
Former NBA Commissioner David Stern Addresses Sports Management Students

On Tuesday, about 50 MTA students from the Sports Management club participated in a special YU lecture from former NBA Commissioner David Stern. Stern was brought to campus by the president of the Yeshiva College Sports Management club, MTA Alumnus Max Stern ('09). Before the presentation, Mr. Stern joined a private lunch with students leaders, including the co-presidents of the MTA Sports Management club, Zev Markowitz ('15) and Ilan Steinmetz ('15), as well as YU alumni working in the sports industry such as Miami Marlins Vice-Chairman Joel Mael and our (and MSG's) very own Shuey Jacoby ('02)! Mr. Stern then headed to the appropriately (though coincidentally) named Max Stern Athletic Center to address the larger gathering of high school and college students.

After a short video highlighting his NBA career, Mr. Stern, who grew up in Teaneck, NJ and served as the league commissioner for 30 years, spoke to the students about the globalization of basketball and how sports has the power to both bring out both the best in people and the worst in people. He then fielded questions from the audience, which ranged from the rationale behind his 2011 veto of the Chris Paul trade (he explained that it was an NBA owned team and he therefore essentially served as an owner; it was thus not so much a veto, but a decision to not go forward with trade put together by his renegade general manager), details of the Seattle Supersonics move to Oklahoma City, and the recent inclusion of a sponsorship deal with daily fantasy game website FanDuel.

After his talk, Mr. Stern was presented with a Yeshiva jersey with his name and the number 30, in honor of his years as the commissioner. The students greatly enjoyed participating in this unique event.

Students Hear Powerful Speech From Uri Yifrach, Father Of Eyal, HY"D
by Amiel Katz ('16)

On Wednesday morning, the entire high school joined with students from Yeshiva University in Lamport Auditorium to hear from Mr. Uri Yifrach, father of Eyal Yifrach Hy'd. Eyal was one of the three Israeli Yeshiva students who were kidnapped and murdered by Hamas terrorists this past summer.

After introductory words from Rabbi Menachem Penner, Dean of RIETS, Mr. Yifrach spoke about how Eyal was a very talented young man and how his death was a loss not only to the family but to all of Am Yisrael. The audience was touched by Mr. Yifrach's moving words, especially when he read an entry from his late son's journal. He concluded his remarks by stressing how important it is for us to remain strong as Jews and that indeed we were all strengthened as a people by the tragic events of the summer which resulted in an unprecedented sense of unity throughout Klal Yisrael.

A sheet with four paragraphs of Tehillim on it, along with the names of those who were injured and remain hospitalized following this week's terror attack on a Shul in Har Nof, Yerushalayim, was given to everyone present in the auditorium.  The assembly concluded with the reading of the Tehillim led by Rabbi Taubes and Yeshiva University Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Meir Goldwicht, and a mi shebierach for Chayim Yechiel ben Malka, Eitan ben Sara, Shmuel Yerachum ben Baila, Avraham Shmuel ben Shaina, and Aryeh ben Bracha, who we hope will have a speedy and full recovery.

Names, Not Numbers Visits Jewish Heritage Museum

This week, the boys in the "Names Not Numbers" Holocausr documentary program, along with other seniors from Rabbi Kerner's and Rabbi Tani Cohen's shiurim, took a trip to downtown Manhattan to visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage. What I expected to be the just an average run of the mill museum visit turned into something much more meaningful.

We started with a presentation on ethical wills, written by people to their family members knowing that they might not survive. To be honest, some of at first thought this might be a bit dull - until we actually read the wills. My group received the will of a Rabbi Geliebter, which led us into a debate on what is meant by revenge. We agreed that true revenge against the Nazis is more than causing them physical harm - it is outliving them. They tried to destroy us but yet here we are, stronger then ever, living and thriving.

After this fantastic workshop, we took a tour of the museum, with our group split up into four sub-groups; every group had a unique experience with their guide. The tour was extremely informative and intellectually stimulating for everyone, even those who originally did not show much interest. In the end, all of us walked out humbler, with our heads held higher, and with a greater pride in our Jewish heritage.

Sports Update
Lions Roll Past Heschel in Hockey

This past Wednesday, the varsity Lions took on the Heschel Heat. The game went by very quickly and ended with a score of 12-0. Goalie Menachem Gans earned his first shutout of the season, Captain Ami Rosenfeld had four goals, and David Boim had a hat trick of his own. Add those to goals scored by Ezra Quint, Zev Markowitz, Yehuda Bencher, and Yosef Stern and  the result was the most goals in a game for MTA this season.
