No Talking for Tehilla

A little over a year ago, Tehilla bas Shoshanah was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a severe congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. Tehilla's mother started a blog called "TEHILLA'S HEART JOURNEY" where she regularly updates Tehilla's progress and challenges. Our own Rabbi Gopin has been following the blog since she was born.

Currently, Tehilla is in need of rachmei Shomayim as she prepares for the next stage in her treatment.

Rabbi Gopin decided that as a zechus for Tehilla, he would ask his talmidim  to do something that is rather difficult for many of us. He asked them to refrain from engaging in any idle talk during davening. The response has been tremendous, as his talmidim have truly risen to the challenge, baruch Hashem.

Every day Rabbi Gopin hands out a picture of Tehilla at the beginning of Shacharis with her name on it and the name of our project as well -"NO TALKING FOR TEHILLA".

Her mother has thanked Rabbi Gopin and his shiur in her blog.

We hope to spread this project to other shiurim in the Yeshiva as well.

Yeshiva University Admissions Office Presents to Seniors

On Tuesday, November 4, our Senior class met with Mr. Matt Schwartz, Associate Director of Admissions at Yeshiva University.  Matt, an MTA alumnus who also served in the Israeli Army, is very familiar to many of our our students because of his role in YUPAC.  He has joined and assisted in a number of Hatzioni-led MTA missions to Washington.

Matt spoke about opportunities uniquely available at YU, as well as academic and need-based financial aid that YU offers its students.  He also spoke about the very popular YU Israel program.

Many students stayed after the presentation to ask questions and seek advice about different aspects of the admissions process, and about how and when to apply, either to the regular program or to YU's Honors Programs.  As the Early Decision deadline is next week, everyone is anxious to make sure to be correctly doing all that needs to be done. The program was hosted by our own College Guidance Department, in which Mr. Sragow and Rabbi Brownstein work closely with the members of the Senior class as they begin to think seriously about their post-MTA opportunities.

Rabbi Mendelson's Shiur Spends Shabbos in YU
by Kovi Diament ('16) and Avi Rothwachs ('16)

This past weekend, Rabbi Mendelson's shiur had the opportunity to stay in MTA and experience YU over Shabbos. Every year before each large test, Rabbi Mendelson's shiur, along with Rabbi Mendelson and his family, stay in the MTA dorms over the weekend, davening and having Shabbos seudos with the YU students who are in for the weekend.

This Shabbos was a truly great experience because a Shabbos in YU is a Shabbos one cannot experience anywhere else, for one simple reason. Where else can you look up from your seat in the Beis Medrash and see not one, not two, not three, but FOUR outstanding, famous Torah personalities? The shiur had the privilege to say "Good Shabbos" to Rav Elchanan Adler, Rav Yosef Blau, Rav Yitzchok Cohen, and Rav Hershel Schachter, all after davening on Friday night!

Later Friday night, after Kabbalas Shabbos/Maariv, the first seudah, and some learning in YU's Glueck Beis Medrash, the shiur had an Oneg Shabbos and heard an inspiring dvar Torah from YU Rosh Yeshiva Rav Yitzchak Cohen.

On Shabbos morning, after davening with the Yeshiva, the boys enjoyed a shiur organized kiddush, more review for Rabbi Mendelson's bechinah, and Shabbos lunch in the YU Dining Hall. The afternoon featured further learning bechavrusa until Minchah, which was followed by Seudah Shelishis in YU and then Maariv.

After Shabbos ended, some students went home, while others stayed overnight for additional review prior to the test that Sunday morning.

When the test finally arrived Sunday morning, the whole shiur realized the impact which this Shabbos had on our learning in general and our knowledge of the material for this bechinah in particular. The whole shiur is looking forward to our next Shabbos in YU before our next big test.

College Bowl Opens Up Season
by Yehuda Goldberg ('15)

This past week, MTA's college bowl team competed in The Heschel School's college bowl tournament. College bowl is a fast paced trivia game in which the contestants are asked questions ranging from element numbers to middle names of influential figures in history and much more.  After losing to Heschel by only two points, the JV team finished strong with a record of 3-1. The varsity team also did well with a record of 2-1.  The college bowl team, led by Mr. Toprovsky, hopes to continue on this path of success throughout the season.

Happenings
MTA defeated Rambam 10.5 to 3.5 in its first match if the year. Coach Rabbi Mendelson was happy with these results but Captain Larry felt we could have done better!

Lions Sports Update
Varsity Basketball Defeats Ramaz

by Ilan Steinmetz ('15)

This week, the MTA Varsity Lions basketball team pulled off a great win against Ramaz. Led by great big-man play by Josh Blumenthal and Ilan Steinmetz, combining for 30 pts., and a couple clutch threes from Willy Kluger, the Lions got their first victory of the season, 51-49, in front of the home crowd. They hope to carry this momentum into their games next week at Derech Hatorah and at home Wednesday night against Kushner. With wins in both of these games, the Lions would even out their record at 3-3.

Varsity Hockey Dominates Ramaz

by Jeremy Borgen ('15)

The MTA Lions traveled this past Wednesday to Ramaz looking to avenge their loss in last years playoffs, when the Ramaz Rams knocked out the MTA Lions in the first round.

The Lions went into the game strong, controlling the ball for most of the first period when David Boim put one past the goalie to put MTA on top 1-0.

The Lions dominated the second period also, but the infamous Ramaz rubber rink made it hard for star Zev Markowitz to show his skills. But the captain finally took advantage of his talent on a power play in the third period, scoring a speeding snapshot from full court under the goalie's blocker. That goal opened up the scoring for the first line offense, as Ami Rosenfeld and Daniel Yager both scored within the next five minutes.

The final score was 4-0 in favor of MTA. Congratulations to Daniel Yager on scoring his first yeshiva league goal. The Lions hope to continue their success against Heshel in two weeks.  Also, we wish a special Mazel Tov to coach Marc Poleyeff on his wedding this past Thursday night!

JV Basketball Starts Out With Win Over SAR

The MTA junior varsity basketball team opened its season with a big "W." They faced off on the road against the SAR Sting in an intense game which ended with MTA winning, 40-39. The Lions had to fight hard till the very end in order to secure this opening game victory. With seconds remaining, Yehudah Colton scored a clutch free-throw to put the Lions in the lead and then intentionally missed the second one in order to let the time run out without giving SAR a chance to set up another play. Credit for the win also goes to Binyamin and Yehuda Buchbinder's efforts on the floor and Marc Giahn's great 3 point shooting. It was a big win on the road for our Lions who hope to use this victory to fuel the next one against Shaarei Torah.
