Asher Finkelstein Named National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist
National Merit Commended Students (from left to right): David Orlow, Yehuda Tager, Yitzchak Fishbach, Tzvi Goldstein and Yisrael Friedenberg.
Congratulations to Asher Finkelstein upon being named a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, the PSAT's. There are only 16,000 semi-finalists and they now have the opportunity to continue in the Merit Scholarship competition in the hope of advancing to finalist standing. This places Asher among the top 2% of all of last years' PSAT test takers, and we are optimistic that he will advance to Finalist status in the Spring.

Congratulations are also due to the students pictured above, Yitzchak Fishbach, Yisrael Friedenberg, Zvi Goldstein, David Orlow and Yehuda Tager, upon being named Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.  About 34,000 Commended Students nationwide are being recognized for their academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2015 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 PSAT Qualifying Exam.
Michael Wildes, Esq., Visits MTA Debate Team
by Akiva Shmalo ('16)

This past Monday, the YUHSB Debate Team was privileged to be visited by Mr. Michael Wildes, a world renowned immigration lawyer and professor. Mr. Wildes is a former policeman, mayor of Englewood, New Jersey, and employee of the United States Attorney's Office, who currently practices in an immigration law firm founded by his father in New York City. He is also an adjunct professor at Yeshiva University's Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

Mr. Wildes honored Yeshiva University High School's Debate Team with a lecture regarding immigration reform and politics in light of this year's "Great Debate" topic: "The United States should create a path to citizenship for most undocumented aliens." Debate team members will argue the pros and cons of this statement in November.

Mr. Wildes expanded his lecture to include opinions and objections of the present students and to allow for diverse branches of discussion which he stimulated, supported, and sometimes refuted. Being an expert in the field, Mr. Wildes delivered a comprehensive message regarding immigration, encompassing immediate and future concerns, economic, social, and moral consequences, political vantage points, statistical analyses, and personal relationships. Furthermore, Mr. Wildes was effective in providing palpable material to students through tales of his own experiences in the field of immigration and related historical phenomena. In particular, Mr. Wildes provided the very interesting theme of juxtaposing modern immigration in America today with similar occurrences in Jewish history, such as in the formation of the Jewish State of Israel, along with personal insights. His valued input has helped enlighten the Debate Team with useful information, ideas, and aspects that will surely be taken advantage of in the Great Debate.

The YUHSB Debate Team would like to thank Mr. Wildes for his time, effort, and positive impact this Monday.

MTA Takes Storm King

On Tuesday of Chol HaMoed Sukkos, the MTA Outdoors Club accompanied Mr. Gillers and Mr. and Mrs. Sragow on a hike up Storm King Mountain in Upstate New York.  Storm King, which rises over 1300 feet above the Hudson River, affords many 360° views of the surrounding areas, and the mostly clear day allowed us to enjoy the spectacular view to its fullest.  Along the way, the MTA Mountain Lions also enjoyed the colorful trees, as the leaves shed their plain green color for the Fall and revealed beautiful yellows, oranges and reds.  It was interesting as well to learn the history of the site, including how a determined group of private citizens saved the mountain from a Con Edison power plant that had been planned for that area.  The highlight, however, was standing at the top of the mountain and enjoying hot dogs and marshmallows roasted over a fire.
Writing Center Peer Tutor Training Begins
by Mendel Weintraub ('16)

This year, YUHSB will be adding a new program to its already packed extracurricular roster: Writing Center. The Writing Center is a revolutionary program in which students meet with a peer tutor on a regular basis to discuss composing essays and to learn how to improve one's overall skill as a writer, all in an inclusive and comfortable environment. On Wednesday, the program kicked off with the commencement of training for the first MTA Peer Tutors involved with the program: Rami Nordlicht ('16), CJ Glicksman ('16), Aryeh Ness ('16), Avraham Orlian ('15), Meechael Hizami ('16) and myself ('16).  Led by Rabbi Schenker, Ms. Lewis, Mrs. Siegfried, and two student advisors from Yeshiva College, we began to learn the necessary skills to become successful tutors. The Writing Center is looking forward to kick off its inaugural season very soon to benefit students of all grades!

Varsity Lions Open Up Hockey season With A Win
by Jeremy Borgen ('15)

The MTA Lions started off their season  with an away game at JEC this past Thursday night.  The game began with a pre-game speech from Coach Marc Poleyeff, who quoted some famous Gemara passages and pumped the team up for the start of the season.

It didn't take long for MTA to find the back of the net when captain Zev Markowitz scored on a half court shot in the first 5 minutes of the game. The Lions controlled the rest of the the first period and, with a goal from Ezra Quint, went to the locker room up 2-0.

The second period saw Ami Rosenfeld score two goals and the score was 4-1 after 2. MTA dominated the third period as well, with Gavriel Mayer and David Boim each scoring, finishing off a hat trick for "Queens."

The game was coming to a close when coach Nachi Cooper called a strategic timeout to rest his players. He then gave a riveting speech to finish the game off. The Lions went home with a 6-1 victory and hope to build on that success next Wednesday when they play the Kushner Cobras in the Lion's Den.
