Baruch Dayan HaEmes

Dear Parents, Students, Alumni, and Friends:

The MTA community was profoundly shocked and deeply saddened this week by the news of the tragic and sudden passing of Ariel Newman, who graduated this past June and had just gone to Eretz Yisrael for the year. Our sincerest feelings of sympathy are extended to his beloved family and to all those who are close to him.

On Thursday, I addressed our whole student body before Minchah to share some words of reflection and consolation appropriate to the somber occasion, emphasizing that as Rebbeim, teachers, and students in our yeshiva, we are all like one family and thus collectively feel this great pain, and that we should learn to better appreciate the gifts of life with which we have all been blessed, especially as we approach the Yomim Noraim. At the end of my remarks, I stressed that the members of our Guidance staff here at MTA (Mrs. Sheffey, Mr. Toporovsky, and Rabbi Ciment), along with all of our Rebbeim, teachers and administrators, are available to any student who may want to talk and who may need some help in processing this event. At the same time, parents should be aware that their sons may wish to have meaningful conversations in the days ahead.

Our entire yeshiva joins together in offering heartfelt condolences to the Newman family and in expressing the hope that we merit sharing only good news in the future.

The shivah information appears below.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Michael Taubes

Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva University High School for Boys

Freshmen Bond On A Hike
by Aryeh Kimmelfeld ('18)

On Wednesday, the entire Freshman grade, MTA's Class of 2018, went on a hike to help kick off the school year. Everyone was very excited to go on their first trip together as high school students at MTA. This was a jam-packed trip, including an awesome BBQ, breathtaking panoramas, intense sports, and of course time for everyone to make new friends.

The hike was quite an adventure, but I have to say that after hiking for three hours, many of the students were glad that a BBQ was still ahead of them!

To top it all off, Mr. David Leshaw, our Director of Admissions, took a picture from a plane as all the students formed the three letters "MTA" on the field!

We
would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all the staff members for making this happen, since the day was truly unforgettable.

A Meaningful Opening Mishmar
by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)

After an entire week of school, the event that many students had eagerly been anticipating had finally come. The first Mishmar had arrived! The evening kicked off starting promptly at 6:15, in both the regular shiur rooms and in the Beis Medrash. Being that this past Thursday was 9/11, many Rebbeim and Shiurim made it a priority to discuss the events of that fateful day thirteen years ago in depth and to learn LeZecher Nishmas all those who perished then as well as in memory of Ariel Newman, an MTA graduate from this past year who had passed away this week in Israel while on a Tiyul. May Hashem elevate his soul.

Although the evening had numerous reasons for people to feel tense and uncomfortable, that would not stop the learning that took place that night, as topics studied ranged from Hilchos Shabbos to Maseches Kesubos. All in all, the evening was a huge success, and both the faculty and students are already looking forward to next week's Mishmar!

"Names, Not Numbers" Holds Opening Meeting

On Thursday, our unique Holocaust remembrance and documentary program, "Names, Not Numbers," now in its ninth year at MTA, held its opening session. The program is centered around Holocaust education, and more specifically, the process of interviewing and videotaping a Holocaust survivor sharing his or her first-hand stories. Group of students are assigned to learn the history and experiences of a given survivor, so as to better understand him or her on a more personal level during the interview process, which they are trained in by a professional journalist. The students then learn how to edit their filmed work in the Yeshiva University film labs. The resulting video is subsequently shown at our annual "Names, Not Numbers" dinner at the end of the year, and is ultimately archived at Yad Vashem in Yerushalayim and at the YU Museum. The students are
