"Meet the Israeli Author" Students Share the Stories they Wrote
by Eli Morell ('15)

This week the "Meet the Israeli Author" class had its final Skype meeting with the acclaimed Israeli author, Chana Bat Shachar. The students in the class took turns discussing their own completed stories with Chana. The first topic of discussion was the title for their stories.  Proposing various ideas, each of the boys, together with Chana, found a suitable one that encompassed the theme of the story.

After this, the students had the opportunity to share with Chana what they gained from the class this year. A major theme among the student reflections, was that boys learned how to enrich their short stories by painting a picture with words, and including as many details as possible.

At the conclusion of the session, the students heard from Mrs. Rosenberg on the unique opportunity that they had in this class, as no other high school in North America has such a chance to be mentored by an award winning Israeli author.

The year was one of growth as writers for every member of the class.

The MTA writers are looking forward to having their work published in the next annual "Meet the Israeli Author" journal. This will be archived at the National Library of Israel and at Yeshiva University's Gottesman Library.

Hatzioni Vistis The UN
by David Aaronson ('14)

On Yom Yerushalayim, members of out Hatzioni club were privileged to visit the Israeli Mission to the United Nations.

Thirty students, accompanied by Mr. Toporovsky, departed MTA at 1:30pm and headed for midtown Manhattan. We arrived at the mission a bit early, which gave us time to go to Starbucks, Mendy's, and Grand Central Terminal beforehand!

When we arrived at the UN Mission, we went through a security check similar to those in the airports. Following the security process, we heard an excellent presentation from Noa Furman, Israel's Senior Representative to the United Nations.

Ms. Furman spoke to us about Israel's role in the United Nations and the activities Israel is working on with UN organizations to help make the world a better place. She also addressed the issue of the anti-Israel bias in the UN, something that has unfortunately been a conflict for many years.

We returned back to school at 5:30PM, where we concluded this wonderful event. Thanks so much to all who participated.

Clothing Drive a Huge Success!

by Josh Matatov ('15)

Over the past four months, Rabbi Soniker's shiur worked very hard to coordinate and promote a clothing drive for Yad Leah, an organization that provides new and used clothing in good condition for needy families in Israel. During the first week of the clothing drive, the boys in the shiur placed signs throughout the school, advertising their mission and promoting the important cause. They strongly emphasized that we care about and want to help our brothers and sisters in Israel who turn to us for assistance. They placed cartons in convenient locations throughout the school in which MTA and Yeshiva University students could deposit donated clothes. The shiur was surprised by the magnitude of donations they received - fifty boxes of clothing!

Led by Rabbi Soniker, David Lipner ('15), Yoni Ahronov ('15) and Joshua Matatov ('15), the shiur succeeded in organizing and packing the clothes. It took a lot of time and effort, but in the end the shiur managed to successfully sort and pack all 50 boxes of clothing.

Ecstatic with the amount of clothes they received, Rabbi Soniker and the students in the shiur knew that their success came with a catch: each box would cost $18 to ship to Israel. However, they came up with an ingenious solution to their $900 problem: Sell "Make a Bracha" bracelets! The boys designed and sold Livestrong-style MTA bracelets, that helped defray nearly $300 of shipping costs.

All the boys who participated would like to express special thanks to Rabbi Schenker and Rabbi Soniker for giving the shiur the opportunity to work with Yad Leah in undertaking a critical and ambitious mission. The boys would also like to express their gratitude to the MTA and Yeshiva University community for opening their hearts - and their closets! - to our brothers and sisters in Israel.

Ulpan Class Goes to Golan
by David Aaronson ('14)

Ending off a year of learning practical and conversational Hebrew, several members of the senior class were treated to a special lunch at Golan. Celebrating their success in mastering conversational Hebrew, both of Morah Haibi's twelfth grade Hebrew Ulpan classes were invited to the Israeli restaurant.

Along with Morah Haibi, Mrs. Rosenberg and Rabbi Taubes, we sat in the restaurant and spoke in Hebrew amongst ourselves and with the faculty. A delicious Israeli lunch, Hebrew conversations among students and teacher alike was a proper way to end a wonderful year of Hebrew language education.

Thank you to Morah Haibi for a wonderful year!

Race To Save Lives Organized By MTA Alums

For the second consecutive year on Roosevelt Island and for the fourth year overall, MTA alums Alex Goldberg ('10) and Aharon Watson ('10) are coordinating the "Race to Save Lives," with the goal of raising over a million dollars to purchase 20 ambulances for United Hatzalah of Israel. As was the case last year, the Lions are planning to "Run as One" with a number of seniors and faculty members volunteering for the run with the goal of supporting their fellow alumni and this great cause. The 5k race is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 9th, and seniors, parents, faculty, and alumni are invited to attend. MTA Alumni in Israel Run for HASC

by Yosef Boniuk ('12)

This past Friday, the twenty-third of May, Yeshivat Shaalvim for Men participated in the Talmon Marathon.  The event was organized by Eli Rozenberg ('12) and Yaakov Feldstein, two Yeshivat Shaalvim talmidim, who had approached the administration, asking to brainstorm ideas to raise money for Camp HASC.

Camp HASC is a unique summer program which provides over 300 children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable camp experience.  Camp HASC serves the social, therapeutic, academic, recreational, and medical needs of all its campers with a positive, "person first" approach to care.  The result was the Yeshiva collaborating with HASC to raise money for camper scholarships by running in the Talmon All Men's Marathon, as a yeshiva.
