Torah Bowl Wins Another Championship!
by Aryeh Klein ('14)

To succeed at Torah Bowl, each team member needs three things: determination, dedication, and an abundance of free time. Despite possessing only the first two of the three required traits, as no MTA student has that much spare time on his hands, the MTA Torah Bowl team managed to pull off another championship - the third in four years.

After beating SAR, Ramaz, Magen David, and TABC to become division champions, the MTA Torah bowl team went down to Brooklyn on Monday to play against Frisch, DRS, and North Shore in the championships. MTA came out strong in the first quarter, but during the second, both North Shore and Frisch had strong comebacks and by the end of the first half they had cut MTA's lead to a mere two points.

During halftime, the MTA team decided that they were ready to show the other teams just whom they were playing against - a team that had won the league championship two out of the past three years, a team that included elementary school Torah Bowl Olympians, a team that was ready to win.

And win they did. Lead by Captain Yitzi Lindenbaum ('14), Captain Aryeh Klein ('14), and freshman sensation Yair Caplan ('17), MTA ended up winning by a score of 61-48(Frisch)-46(North Shore)-27 (DRS). The retiring seniors of the team are Yitzi Lindenbaum, Aryeh Klein, and Gabi Rosenthal.

Congratulations to the entire team and to their devoted coach, Rabbi Pearl!

Hatzioni Hears from Israel Deputy Prime Minister Ofir Akunis
by David Aaronson ('14)

This past Monday, Hatzioni was privileged to host another terrific guest speaker, Mr. Ofir Akunis, who currently serves as Israel's Deputy Prime Minister and is a Member of Knesset representing the Likud Party.

Upon his arrival to the YU Campus, Deputy Minister Akunis was escorted to the Library where he addressed approximately 50 MTA faculty members and students, primarily those who are involved with Hatzioni. Holding up the most recent edition of the Hatzioni magazine, the Deputy Minister stated that the members of Hatzioni are "the best ambassadors that the State of Israel will ever have."

Following his speech, we brought Deputy Minister Akunis to the twelfth floor of Belfer Hall, where we showed him a beautiful view of New York City. The Deputy Minister, along with several Hatzioni members, then entered the presidential suite for a meeting with President Joel and Rabbi Taubes. Deputy Minister Akunis was very impressed with the administrative leadership of YU and MTA, telling them to "keep up the good work and to continue doing an excellent job."

This visit by Deputy Minister Akunis could not have occurred without the help of so many people. Among them was Nadav Douani, Chief of Staff to the Deputy Minister, Shimmy and Avraham, our photographers for the event, and Rabbi Green & Mr. Gillers, for all their help in coordinating this wonderful gathering. Last but not least, thank you to all who attended and participated. We look forward to seeing you again for future Hatzioni events.

An Amazing Day at Camp Monroe
by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)

Camp Monroe in Monroe, NY was filled with joy and achdus on Thursday when students and faculty traveled to the camp for the annual MTA post-Lag BaOmer trip.

For the first part of the day, the boys, Rebbeim, and teachers had the option of playing soccer, football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, ping- pong, mini-golf or learning in a special shiur. For two hours not a single one of these activities was abandoned. Everyone greatly enjoyed their activity-packed morning.

At approximately 12:30, all students and faculty joined together for a massive barbeque with hot dogs, burgers (and veggie burgers for those who preferred), watermelon, chips, soda, and water.

After the incredibly delicious lunch, and epic Rebbeim vs. Talmidim softball game was held, in which the Talmidim managed to stave off a last inning comeback by the Rebbeim to win 6-5.

Sports continued all afternoon, including some Camp Monroe firsts: flag football tournaments and Quidditch. All in all, it was truly an excellent day, and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

"Names, Not Numbers" Class Concludes with a Powerful Evening
by Avi Weschler ('14)

This year's Names, Not Numbers class was a tremendous and meaningful success, capped off by an amazing and moving evening, featuring a dinner and the screening of the class film. The class gives students the special opportunity to meet and interview Holocaust survivors, and to record and film the interviews for posterity. Created and spearheaded by MTA's own Mrs. Tova Rosenberg, the Names Not Numbers program, now marking its tenth year, seeks to inform and empower the younger generation and to give students the opportunity to gain a unique understanding of our people's most tragic time.

The Names, Not Numbers dinner in Belfer Hall last week, attended by over 200 people, including students, parents, faculty members, and of course the interviewed survivors and their families, began with remarks by Rabbi Taubes, who emphasized the critical importance of the program from a Torah perspective. Afterward, Mauricio Arenas, the professional filmmaker who assisted the boys in their video production efforts, showed the "making-of" film, which captured the intense process of conducting interviews, shooting footage, and editing video.

Students and survivors talked and ate together during dinner, further cementing the bonds forged during the interview process. The meaningful evening was solemnly concluded by Yehoshua Szafranski ('14), who read a powerful short story. Everyone in attendance agreed that they had experienced an evening not soon to be forgotten.
MTA Hosts Final Debate of the Year

This week, the MTA debate team had the pleasure of hosting the final debate of the year. This debate included various formats other than classical debate, including competitions such as extemporaneous speaking and a scenario debate. "Extemp" is a form of public speaking in which the speaker is given a topic and must almost immediately speak about it for 5 minutes, in an interesting, well organized manner.

In a similar vein, the captains and seniors from Ezra, Rambam, and MTA organized a scenario debate. In this form of debate, the debaters are given a scenario at the debate and must  then debate the topic using only the information given in the scenario.

Both of these competitions proved to be interesting, educational, and an all around great experience. Thank you again to Mrs. Levitt for organizing this event and for all she does for the debate team

MTA LEAD Participants Present Their Ideas

Noam Josse, winner of "Best Presentation

On Tuesday evening, a number of MTA LEAD students who spent the past few months preparing their business ideas had the opportunity to present them to several of the MTA LEAD Executive Council members, including Michael Strauss, Associate Dean and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Sy Syms School of

Business, Dr. Tamar Avnet, Chair of Marketing and Management at Syms, Moshe Kinderlehrer ('92), Publisher & Co-Founder of the Bergen Jewish Link, and Shuey Jacoby ('02), Manager of Marketing Partnership Sales Operations at The Madison Square Garden Company (and Marketing & Recruitment Advisor at MTA). Over the past few months, the students were able to attend various workshops led by members of the Syms faculty, and worked with Syms

students who were provided as project mentors.

Yaakov Kurlantzick
Winner of "Best Business Idea"
Ideas included enhancing the use of big data with everyday products, car seats that alerts drivers if they leave an infant in the car (click here for the video presented), a pulse monitoring watch, and a device that can catch auto emissions.

While all students did an incredible job putting together their ideas and presentation, the council members ultimately selected Noam Josse ('17)'s presentation on Shale Gas fracking as "Best Presentation" and Yaakov Kurlantzick ('16)'s presentation on an omni-wheel drive automobile as "Best Business Idea." Both students will be receiving Amazon gift cards.
