A Unique Hebrew Test
by Gabi Rosenthal ('14)
After spending a whole year learning conversational Hebrew with Morah Haibi, her 12th grade classes were put to the ultimate test: having conversations with people they had never to spoken to in Hebrew before.
Over the past week, as our final, each student had a one on one ten minute conversation with either: Rabbi Taubes, Mrs. Rosenberg, Rabbi Richter, or Rabbi Schenker. The conversation included: speaking about our summer plans, our plans for next year, and our favorite restaurants and how to get there.
The conversations were a great way for each student to showcase what each of them had gained out of their year in Ulpan. These conversations were a great practice for when we will need to speak Hebrew to someone we've never spoken to before.
Thank you to Rabbi Taubes, Mrs. Rosenberg, Rabbi Richter, and Rabbi Schenker for taking time out of their busy schedules. And a special thank you to Morah Haibi for putting up with us the entire year and teaching us even though I'm sure we were a handful

Shai Cohen ('14) is Among One of 36 Students Across the Globe to Join New Class of Jefferson Scholars at the University of Virginia
by The Jefferson Scholars Foundation
Shai Cohen ('14) of Bergenfield, New Jersey was named a recipient of the Jefferson Scholarship at the University of Virginia. Awarded solely on the basis of merit, Jefferson Scholarships provide full financial support for four years of study at U.Va.
Jefferson Scholars undergo a rigorous multi-stage selection process. Candidates must first be nominated by their high schools for their demonstrated excellence and exceptional potential in the areas of leadership, scholarship and citizenship. They are then interviewed by one of 58 Jefferson Scholars Regional Selection Committees.
Shai was selected as a regional finalist from the New York City, New York region and was invited to travel to Charlottesville to participate in the last stage of the competition, engaging in a series of activities, including essay and mathematics examinations, seminars led by University faculty members, as well as a final round of interviews conducted by U.Va. alumni, faculty and administrators.
This year 1,600 students were nominated by their high schools. Additional finalists were selected by U.Va.'s Office of Undergraduate Admission, which reviews the applications of all students. The 36 Jefferson Scholars selected this year represent the largest cohort in the program's 34-year history and come from 22 states and two countries. They join a community of 92 rising second-, third- and fourth-year scholars, who are active and visible leaders at the University of Virginia.
"These are individuals of diverse backgrounds, interests and passions, with varying worldviews developed from different life experiences," Jimmy Wright, president of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, said. "Jefferson Scholars are linked together by a common commitment to being leaders, scholars and citizens, and they are passionate about making their communities better places, each in his or her own way."

Phillip Meyer Offers CPR Course to Teachers and Students
by Mr. Murray Sragow
During the week of May 10, students and faculty were offered a CPR course designed to prepare them to be in position to save a life. The course, offered by senior Philip Meyer (Philip is a licensed and practicing first responder) through the Arista Honor Society, used the curriculum and resources of the American Heart Association and resulted in certification by the AHA for those who passed the test at its conclusion. The course covered chest compressions, breathing through mouth-to-mouth and through an intermediary device, and the use of an automated external defribrillator. In order to enable Philip to work closely with each student, the course was repeated many times over the week, each time with no more than 5 or 6 students. The students who attended (both faculty and students were students for this program) gained skills and confidence in their ability to make a difference in a life threatening situation.
It is reasonable to argue that failure to be prepared for a life threatening situation would, if one occurs, cause the unprepared person to violate the mitzvah of "lo taamod al dam re'echa" (Don't stand idly by your neighbor's blood). Thanks to Philip Meyer, a large group of MTA students and faculty can now be confident that they will not violate this mitzvah if the case arises.

Freshman Rafting Trip a Huge Success!
On Thursday morning, the freshmen set out for Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania, where they embarked upon the annual end-of-the-year freshmen rafting trip along the Lehigh River. The weather was beautiful, and the boys easily handled the rapids, swam in the river, and engaged in spirited singing of the maritime classic, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."
When they returned to the base camp, the boys played football, frisbee, and volleyball, and then had a delicious barbecue - a fitting end to an amazing day! Check out the pictures here!

Debate Team Practices for Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament
By Yehuda Goldberg ('17)
On Monday night the members of the debate society practiced for the extemporaneous speaking tournament this upcoming Monday.
Extemporaneous speaking is a fun and challenging form of public speaking in which the speaker is given a topic and must speak on it without any research or prior preparation. This allows the speaker to refine his skills of public speaking and ability to speak on various topic areas.
The topics range from domestic and political issues, such as healthcare or immigration, to what ones favorite book or century is. We thank Mrs. Levitt for organizing this and other public speaking competitions and for sharing her wisdom and guidance in the art of public speaking.
