A Message From Your Student Council Presidents
Aaron Black, Josh Blumenthal, and Yehuda Weschler

During the next year, we hope to make MTA students more aware of the community around us by integrating more Chessed programs into the school for all grades. We are fortunate to learn in the mecca of culture and education, New York City, and we hope to utilize the city for all it has to offer. We also would like to strengthen our school spirit through more programs similar to the already successful "Spirit Week. We plan on trying to bring our grade closer together to be role models for the rest of the students at MTA. We also plan on appointing representatives from each shiur so all of the students in our grade can become involved. We hope that by implementing these plans the entire student body can have a greater and more meaningful MTA experience.

A Most Meaningful Yom HaZikaron
by Aharon Tager ('17)
This year's Yom HaZikaron program, featuring Rabbi Eitan Katz, presently the Regional Director of New Jersey NCSY and a former soldier in the Israeli army, was an extremely inspirational and moving event. To hear real stories of heroism, and indeed to meet a hero, was completely amazing! This was the first time the reality of the day truly hit me on a personal level, and probably many others, for real. We at MTA got a taste of the atmosphere in Israel during this special hour of our school day.

Rabbi Katz's story was especially inspiring when he related about how a non-observant officer was willing to blow himself up in order to keep a fellow soldier who was a father alive, and when he told of a non-Jewish soldier defending the Jewish state. Several of his personal experiences were motivating, and the message was clear: not only are there still many people who want to preserve our right to the Land of Israel, but the officers of the Israeli army do not consider their lives more valuable than their "lesser" soldiers. It was also impressive to hear about the determination of the observant soldiers to do everything in accordance with Halachah.

The program achieved its goal of demonstrating why we need to recall those who have fallen in defense of our homeland, as they definitely need to be remembered forever for their noble deeds.
MTA Celebrates Israel @ 66
by Mathew Albert ('17)

On Tuesday, MTA celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut with our annual chagigah. After davening, we recited the chatzi Hallel following words of introduction from Rabbi Taubes, and in the later part of the morning, the students had fun enjoying spirited dancing and passionate singing. The ruach could be heard from blocks away.

The students also had the z'chus to hear a speech from one of Yeshiva University's Roshei Yeshiva, Rabbi Meir Goldwicht, who grew up in Eretz Yisrael. Rabbi Goldwicht's derashah pertained to the connection between Yom HaAtzmaut, the end of Pesach, Sefiras Ha'omer, and Shavuos

The day was topped off by classes in which the teachers made a connection between their particular classroom topics and Eretz Yisrael. One example was Tzahal-training gym classes (See below for more classes connected to the day). If one wants to witness the passion for Eretz Yisrael at MTA, Yom HaAtzmaut is the day to come and see!

Mrs. Siegfried's English class read an excerpt from Amos Oz's memoir "Tale of Love and Darkness" about the author's experience as a young boy in Jerusalem listening to a broadcast of the UN vote on the Partition of Palestine and the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem in 1948.

Group of Juniors Spend Shabbos in Binghamton University
by Yitzchok Fishbach ('15)

Deciding which college to attend, is, for many people, one of the hardest choices of their teenage years. This past weekend, MTA's college guidance counselor, Mr. Sragow, decided to make the process a lot easier for a few of us by inviting and personally transporting a group of prospective applicants - Juniors Emmet Weisz, Elan Dayanov, Yitzchok Fishbach, Jake Spector, and Gabriel Bonduransky - to Binghamton University's campus for a Shabbos stay.

After looking forward to the visit for weeks, we all had high hopes for the weekend, and suffice it to say, our expectations were more than fulfilled. From the moment we stepped foot on the campus, we were disarmed by the gorgeous grounds and remarkably pleasant atmosphere, and the rest of our Shabbos proceeded accordingly. The vibrant Chabad house, packed to the brim with Jews of all types for Shabbos dinner, was a definite highlight, as was the tour of the entire campus on Friday afternoon.

The people were friendly, there was a significant Jewish presence, and all the students who participated agreed that visiting Binghamton gave them a much clearer perspective on the college landscape and greater insight into which colleges to apply to come next fall.

Of course, a huge thanks goes out to the Chabad and our respective dorm hosts, and undoubtedly to Mr. Sragow, without whom the trip would not have been possible. We hope to continue the program next year with visits to other college campuses.
