Seniors Inducted and Juniors Selected at Annual Arista Dinner
by Yaakov Saks ('14)

On Wednesday night, MTA hosted its annual Arista National Honor Society Dinner. This dinner honored the seniors who were able to maintain a minimum GPA throughout their high school years and introduced the juniors for the upcoming year; many guests and parents joined the students in attendance at this special event.

The dinner began with words of welcome from Mrs. Levitt, our Arista faculty advisor, and continued with speeches from the senior officers who described the many successful activities run by Arista students this past year, including blood drives, student to student tutoring programs, and a school-wide study night in advance of Midterm Exams, as well as from seniors discussing the four different pillars of the Arista society, Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. After dinner was served, Rabbi Taubes shared greetings and then presented Rabbi Dr. Bernard Rosensweig, long-time Professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University, who delivered the Shalom Frankel Memorial Lecture, speaking about the obstacles and accomplishments of the Jewish people throughout their existence and noting how our continued success defies all commonly accepted historical theories.

The MTA choir then performed, singing their competition-winning song "Adon Olam". The dinner concluded with the presentation of the certificates for the senior inductees by Dr. Taylor and the announcement of the names of the junior candidates by Mr. Dobrick.

Also in attendance were members of the Frankel family, long-time supporters of the study of Jewish History at MTA and sponsors of the evening's lecture. They were thanked for their continued support by Rabbi Dr. Herbert Dobrinsky, YU Vice President for University Affairs.

Congratulations to my fellow Senior Arista members who worked hard to achieve this status and good luck to all as they pursue their future endeavors.

Congratulations to the following students from the class of '15 for being selected to serve as the officers for the MTA chapter of Arista during the upcoming school year:

Presidents

Rabbi Richter's Shiur Packs Pesach Food For KosherTroops

This past week, Rabbi Richter's 9th grade shiur partnered with KosherTroops to help Jewish American servicemen and women who will be away from their families for Pesach.

The shiur helped with the packing of provisions for the troops so that they will have food for Pesach. Everyone in the shiur felt that they made a big contribution.

Rabbi Axelrod's Shiur Assists at Masbia
by Jake Socol ('16)

This past Thursday, Rabbi Axelrod's 10th grade Shiur traveled to Masbia of Queens, a kosher soup kitchen that aids those in need. The boys packaged and distributed food for those who came for their weekly pick-up.

"The experience was very rewarding, and it allowed us to really appreciate the needs of others and how we can help", said Jonny Takhalov ('16).

The Shiur hopes to go back and pitch in again a few more times before the year is done.

Charlie Harary Addresses MTA LEAD

Last Monday, Charlie Harary, world renowned lecturer and Clinical Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at YU's Sy Syms School of Business, came to the school for a presentation to students in the MTA LEAD program. He spoke to the packed room of aspiring entrepreneurs, inspiring them to innovate and dream, and to use failure as a learning lesson. Using lessons from Pesach, he reinforced the message that beliefs drive reality. He asserts that God asked the Jewish nation to hold the first seder on the night before they left Mitzrayim, rather than on the first anniversary when we might assume the first seder should take place, precisely for the reason that our beliefs and mindset drive our reality. We needed to act like a free people in order to execute that reality. Mr. Harary's lecture is available online at YUTorah.

  • Last Friday, students in the MTA LEAD program had the opportunity to hear from Daniel Schultz, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Gotham Ventures, an early stage venture capital firm based in NYC.
