MTA Students Come Out As Winners in the the YU Admissions Process

MTA was again the most honored high school by the YU Honors admissions process.  Thirteen current seniors and eight graduates in Israel were admitted to the Honors Programs at Yeshiva College and Sy Syms School of Business, and were awarded almost $2 million in academic scholarships.

Several factors seem to be responsible for this extraordinary performance: MTA students are recognized by YU as being among the top students at any yeshiva high school in the world; undoubtedly, this is because MTA consistently provides a top-notch challenging education that pushes our best students to achieve their potential.  Moreover, our students have come to appreciate the importance of YU's Torah U'Madda educational philosophy, and feel the desire to continue their pursuit of excellence in both Torah and Madda at the college level, available only at Yeshiva University

Paul Rusesabagina, the Real Life Hero of the Film "Hotel Rwanda," speaks to Names, Not Numbers Participants

In conjunction with Names, Not Numbers, our oral history project which interviews Holocaust survivors and preserves their testimony on film, students at MTA were privileged to converse with Paul Rusesabagina, the real life hero of the film, "Hotel Rwanda, who saved over 1,200 lives during the episode of ethnic cleansing that took place in Rwanda in the 1994.

Mr. Rusesabagina described his experiences during that tragic period, the helplessness of those he sheltered, and his disappointment with the world for failing to intervene.  The MTA boys shared with him the lessons that they learned from their interviews and compared his heroism with that of Raoul Wallenberg, the savioiur of many Jews during the Holocaust.

The session concluded with Mr. Rusesabagina describing the importance of not being a bystander.  His message to our students was that hatred and intolerance begin with words.  By fighting for human rights, people can make a difference in preventing future acts of genocide in the world, wherever they may occur.

Through his conversation with MTA students, Mr. Rusesabagina joined a number of guest speakers who have been invited to add different dimensions to the Names Not Numbers project. Other speakers have included the noted Holocaust scholar and Academy Award winner, Dr. Michael Berenbaum, and newspaper editors and journalists from the  New York Times and Newsday.

Honors College Hears from YU Professor Ari Mermelstein on the Passover Seder
by Yitzi Lindenbaum ('14)

During lunch on Wednesday, the entire Honors College had the privilege of hearing from Dr. Ari Mermesltein, Assistant Professor of Bible at Yeshiva University. Dr. Mermelstein delivered a special pre-Pesach presentation about different Tannaitic approaches to the Pesach Seder in the wake of the Second Temple's destruction and the resulting absence of the Korban Pesach, which had previously been such a central focus of the evening. The fascinating presentation provided invaluable historical context for the current-day Haggadah that we read at the Seder, with its emphasis on the mitzvah of Sippur Yetzias Mitzrayim, and  introduced important alternate versions of some of the texts highlighting the move away from the emphasis on the Korban. Dr. Mermelstein certainly provided all the Honors College chaverim with something new and fresh to say on the Seder night.

MTA Students Attend YU Play

One of the great values of our school's being able to benefit so regularly from our close association with Yeshiva Universitys is the availability of the Yeshiva University Drama Society.  For years,  freshmen students have been attending the productions of YUDS each semester.  This past Wednesday,  the group was expanded to include sophomores.

In all, sixty students walked over to YU's Schottenstein Center theater to watch "The Mouse That Roared"  directed by Ms. Lin Snider.  Having the entire theater full of our students gave an intimate quality to watching this interesting comedy involving two countries,  wine and a mouse.   We watched the final rehearsal,  with a few foibles,  and really enjoyed it all.

Accompanied by Shuey Jacoby and our own teachers,  the students laughed and applauded often.  We look forward to the fall production,  whatever that may be.
Host MTA Stuns Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Last Minute Upset at Sarachek Tournament
by MacsLive.com Staff

With Ida Crown up by one and just the final minute remaining, the Aces looked to draw out the clock and complete a remarkable comeback against MTA, whom they had trailed by 16 at halftime. But a missed free throw attempt with 20 seconds left in regulation by the Academy gave the underdog Lions their own chance at the stripe with 2.4 to play.  Crowd at their feet, and the Lions down 56-55, Ezra Teichman, fouled on a shot taken off a clutch tip of the loose ball from Akiva Gottlieb, made the first attempt to tie the game and with the entire gym holding their breath, made the second, effectively sealing a 57-56 victory for MTA.

Soccer Team Wins Again
by Azriel Markowitz ('15)

As the MTA Lions Soccer team started their season, they beat Ramaz at home and then beat Magen David at home, which gave them a great record of 2-0.  With their next game against Flatbush, the team traveled to Brooklyn to fight for another win; with an aggressive game the final score was 8-3, MTA, and thanks especially to the stellar goalie Shmuel Bitton, MTA had a 3-0 record.  On Monday night, MTA traveled to Ramaz for a rematch and came home with yet another win, giving them the best record in the league at 4-0.

On Wednesday night the Lions faced off against SAR, and with the ending of the first quarter they were down 8-3.  Knowing that if they didn't score in the next quarter the game would be lost, the Lions played hard and ended the first half down by only a few goals. But they were unable to complete the comeback and took their first loss.

Even though we lost, we still have a great record of 4-1, and hope to win against Ezra Academy on April 9th at 7:30 in the Den.
