What Do MTA Boys Do On Snow Days?

Many boys in the Shiurim of Rav Bechhofer, Rav Kerner, and Rav Mendelson learned with their Rebbeim via on-line media!!

Later, the MTA Dormers and their Israeli exchange friends from Yeshivat Makor Chaim journeyed down to Central Park for a sledding adventure. Skiing makes an appearance too. Snow days are the best - especially 2 the same week!

Varsity Hockey Team Runs for Chai Lifeline
by Zev Markowitz ('15)

This past weekend the MTA Varsity Hockey Lions ran the ING Miami half marathon with Chai Lifeline. The team as a whole raised close to $80,000 for this special Tzedakah whichelps children with cancer and their families.

The weekend started off with some Chai Lifeline spirit which continued throughout an enjoyable Shabbos in Miami. The further into the weekend the team got the more connected they felt to Chai Lifeline. Chai Lifeline is a wonderful organization that helps the families of these sick children; one program they run is called Camp Simcha, a summer camp where the ill kids have a wonderful time and enjoy summer life.

Congratulations to the whole team for raising the money they raised and for their impressive times in the race!

10th Grade Sees Production of King Lear

by Amiel Katz ('16) and Avi Rothwachs ('16)

On Tuesday, the sophomores of MTA attended a production of King Lear. The famous Shakespeare play was presented in BAM, the Brooklyn Academy of Music. We had the privilege to see a performance by one of the all time greats in the acting world, Frank Langella, who has won three Tony Awards. He won two for his performance as Richard Nixon in the Broadway hit Frost/Nixon and one for his role in Edward Albee's Seascape.

For the students who are in Mrs. Levitt's English class, the show had an even greater meaning. A few months ago, we were divided into groups and each was assigned an act from King Lear that we had to perform. We needed accurate costumes, props, and needed to know our lines like in a real performance. We were all curious as to how the director of this professional production, Angus Jackson, would decide to present the play.

In addition, this specific production was an unusual performance because only schools were allowed to attend. Therefore, after the play concluded, there was a Q&A session with the director and a few of the actors. Anyone who wanted to speak up was given a microphone and could ask any question regarding the play to the director or an actor. This was a unique experience for students in the theater and one of the MTA students, Shimmy Socol, asked a brilliant question to the director of the play. This trip was one which every student that attended will remember.

Students in Names, Not Numbers Begin Interviewing Survivors
by Joey Goffstein ('14)

Names, Not Numbers is an elective that offers the seniors of MTA the opportunity to make their own a documentary of a personal interview with a living Holocaust survivor. The program started at MTA a few years ago with only a few students and has now grown to attract over 30 students.

This past week, the seniors started interviewing their survivors, a process which will continue in the coming weeks. The next step will be for the students to start editing their films, having the option to use software like Final Cut Pro which is what real movie makers in Hollywood use.

The course concludes in May with a big dinner in which the full documentary is shown in front of the students, the survivors, and their families. This elective is a once in a life time opportunity.

As a senior who is taking the course, I can truly say that it has changed my life and the way I look at everything.

Danny Ayalon, Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Addresses Students
by David Aaronson ('14)

This past Thursday, the entire YUHSB community was privileged to attend yet another school-wide Hatzioni event, this one featuring Ambassador Danny Ayalon as the guest speaker. Ayalon was Israel's Ambassador to the United States from 2002 until 2006. He then served as a member of the Knesset and was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until early last year. Currently, Ayalon is a visiting professor at YU, teaching a college course on Israeli Foreign Policy.

In his speech, the Ambassador spoke about the historical bond of the Jewish people to the land of Israel and our moral right to have a homeland there. He addressed the strong need for U.S. support for Israel, and for student advocacy on behalf of the Jewish State. Ambassador Ayalon concluded by taking several questions from the audience, to which he gave very-fitting answers, based on his experiences as a public figure in the Israeli Government.

It was a true privilege to have Ambassador Ayalon speak to us, and it's a big honor to have him on our campus as a YU faculty member for this semester. Thank you to all who attended and participated in this enjoyable experience. We look forward to hosting more Hatzioni events in the months ahead.

Rabbi Richter's Shiur Hears from Chief Rabbi Sacks
by Yehuda Goldberg ('17)

This Sunday, the students of Rabbi Richter's shiur had the unique opportunity to hear from Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, during a special Yeshiva University Yom Iyun. The students not only got to listen to Rabbi Sacks' speech, but had the unique privilege of sitting way up front (literally under the pulpit) while he spoke.

The topic of the speech, "Haman- the first anti-Semite," delved into anti-Semitism from how it began, how it mutated, and most importantly, how to fight it. However, perhaps most amazing about the speech was not the topic, but the person who gave it and the manner in which he did.

Rabbi Sacks blended Torah and history seamlessly, beautifully demonstrating his mastery in both disciplines. Not only is Rabbi Sacks a role model for us all, but he also teaches each MTA student to not only to learn based on, but to live by, the motto of the institution - Torah U'mada.
