Makor Chaim Update - Week 4
Click here for more pictures from week 4 of Makor Chaim
Once again, it was another amazing week here at Makor Chaim. On Sunday, we started off the day with an amazing and inspirational Tzfat Shacharis. Then, upon returning to the hotel we ate a nice hearty breakfast with an ice cream treat from oberachahur Madrich, Shua (a member of the MTA family!).
After viewing the entire Kineret from atop a beautiful mountain, we went on a hike through the Golan Heights with our great tour guide, Gershon. We went to two different waterfalls where some of us went swimming in the cold water. We walked back up the stairs to go on top of the waterfalls where Shua taught us a game all about teamwork. We then kept on walking for a while until we reached the second waterfall, where we sat down and ate lunch. Shua and Ashi taught us how to grill tuna with just a can of tuna, a lighter and toilet paper.
While we were eating, our tour guide, Gershon, told us a Dvar Torah. After we ate lunch and cleaned up, we climbed up a huge mountain of rocks where we met our bus to take us to the Golan Visitors Center. We saw a short video of how amazing and beautiful the Golan is and then went into a room with a huge 3D map of the Golan. There was an automated map that showed us how Israel took over the Golan and how they defended it afterwards. From there we moved on to an Israeli mountain overlooking Syria and Gershon showed us where Syria is, as far as we could see. We concluded the day with dinner before returning to Makor Chaim where we chilled for the rest of the night.
Monday was a regular school day, but on Tuesday we had a meeting with HaRav Dov Singer, Rosh Yeshiva of Makor Chaim, who taught us what it means to say "Atoh" to Hashem when davening or saying a berachah. The talk was moving, inspiring, and really changed the outlook of saying berachos for everyone. On Tuesday night, we went to the home of Karen Guth, our English teacher. She made us dinner and showed us various clips of the scene "It's alive" from different Frankenstein movies.
On Wednesday, we went to the Alon HaBoded and then hiked on the path of our forefathers (Derech Ha'Avos). On the way, we saw old mikvaos that were from King David's time and later for the people who would go to the Beis HaMikdash. We saw actual Roman mile markers along the road because that was the highway in those days from Chevron to Yerushalayim. In the evening, we went to the Alon Shevut public swimming pool and basketball courts.
On Thursday, we had the privilege to meet the prominent Israeli Rav and Rosh Yeshiva HaRav Adin Steinsaltz, who heads a network of Israeli yeshivot which Makor Chaim is part of, and who is also well known for his modern translations of the Gemara. He spoke to us about a wide variety of topics, including the health benefits of chocolate, science fiction, sea lions, and mimicking parrots. We hope to continue to have a great time in Makor Chaim and can't wait for the yeshiva Shabbaton this coming Shabbos.

Many Students Take Advantage of Study Night
by Moshe Rosensweig ('14)
On Wednesday night, at the conclusion of the last day of regular classes for this term, MTA held another school-wide study night. Study night has traditionally been a night where members of Arista, the National Honor Society, who usually tutor students throughout the year, stay late and help students prepare for their finals. This year, many teachers stayed to help their students as well.
The turnout was fantastic, with over 70 students staying to be tutored. Pizza, soda, and muffins were served, which enhanced the night for many. Students came to study many subjects including Gemara, Geometry, Algebra, Calculus, World history, European history, American History, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English, and other subjects as well.
A special thank you to Mrs. Levitt for organizing the event and to Mr. Dobrick for arranging for transportation home afterwards.

11th Grade Honors College Sees "The Glass Menagerie"
This past Wednesday, the 11th graders in the Honors College took a trip to Broadway to see "The Glass Menagerie." The play was written by Tennessee Williams, which the 11th grade read with Rabbi Brownstein in English class.
The story takes place in St. Louis in the 1930's, and sheds light on the futility of life. Tom, the protagonist and narrator, reflects upon his disappointing life and his decision to abandon his mother, Amanda, a controlling, but pathetic woman, and his sister Laura, whose chances of getting married are minuscule due to her chronic shyness, which is magnified by her limp. Tom is compelled to leave by his desire for adventure, which he feels is noticeably absent from his life, but by doing so, he repeats the mistakes of his father, who "worked for the phone company, but fell in love with long distance."
One theme in the play that regularly comes up is that of an escape location which comforts the character, whether it is Tom's fire escape, Amanda's stories about the romantic triumphs of her youth at Blue Mountain, or Laura's obsession with her glass menagerie.
The play was very interesting and thought-provoking, and was a great experience for everyone. Thank you to Mrs. Siegfried for purchasing the tickets for us, as well as to Rabbi Brownstein for accompanying us on the trip.

12th Grade English Classes See "Waiting for Godot"
On Wednesday, two of Mr. Kulnis's 12th grade English classes attended Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett's acclaimed post-modern production. Having read the play and seen the movie in class, it was only fitting for the students to see the popular on-stage adaptation, which starred the notable Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. It was a superb performance, and a great time was had by all.
