Makor Chaim Participants Depart This Sunday
This Sunday we will bid farewell to the Sophomore participants of our annual MTA-Mekor Chaim exchange program who leave for a six week stay in Eretz Yisrael.
YUHSB and Yeshivat Makor Chaim (YMC), located in Kibbutz Kfar Etzion in Gush Etzion, are partners in an annual student exchange program in which YUHSB sophomores and YMC juniors spend several weeks in each other's yeshiva. The project is unique in that it has provided an opportunity for YUHSB students to obtain an experiential appreciation for the Torah of Eretz Yisrael through a fully integrated program with their Israeli peers for Limudei Kodesh.
Yeshivat Makor Chaim was founded over a quarter-century ago by noted Jewish educators Rabbi Adin Steinzaltz and Rabbi Dov Singer. It was awarded the prestigious Religious Education Prize in 5765 by the Israeli government. This unique institution embodies a revolutionary philosophy of high school education. It puts the emphasis on educating a new generation of passionately committed Jews, who realize that their own fulfillment is dependent upon the diversity they encounter among others. Love for learning Torah together with individuality and self-expression are the keys that make this school so successful. YMC is one of the most sought-out high schools in Eretz Yisrael, attracting the best and the brightest throughout the country.
The goal of the YUHSB program is to give our students a taste of the Makor Chaim experience in two ways - by sending our students there and by bringing the Makor Chaim students to our yeshiva. The culture of deep spiritual purpose, joyous song and dance, and ongoing reflection that is the hallmark of the Makor Chaim education exposes the YUHSB boys to serious religious and intellectual growth in ways that might otherwise be unavailable for the typical 10th grader, while offering their Israeli counterparts a flavor of American learning. For their part, the visiting Makor Chaim students have injected a sense of passion, urgency and authenticity into the rhythms of school life here at our yeshiva as well, while gaining insight into Jewish life and Torah learning in the United States.
It has become clear over the several years that MTA and YMC have partnered that the students in both institutions gain immensely from this one of a kind program.

Hatzioni and MTA Students Attend YU's Lobby Mission to Washington
by David Aaronson ('14)
This past week was the YU Lobby Mission to Washington for High School students. We had been preparing for this annual trip for almost six months, and the all our hard work really paid off. The mission was arranged by Matt Schwartz, from the YU Office of Admissions, and organized by leaders of Hatzioni, MTA's Israel advocacy club. It attracted over 100 students from nearly ten Jewish high schools in the tri-state area.
On Sunday, we had the opening plenary session on the Beren Campus of YU, where I was privileged to welcome the large crowd of students and introduce Yotam Goren, First Secretary General of the Israeli Mission to the UN. Yotam addressed the issue of Iran's nuclear program and discussed the strong influence we, as students, can have on members of Congress when we lobby for Israel. We then split up into groups and went over the bills we were lobbying for. Afterwards, we had several breakout sessions when we rehearsed for our congressional meetings. Once the opening session concluded, we were fully prepared to go to Washington.
Early the next morning, we boarded the bus and headed off to the nation's capital. The Hatzioni/MTA delegation was led by Mr. Sragow, who joined us for the entire trip. Our first stop was the Israeli Embassy, where I was honored to address the crowd once again and introduce Dor Shapira, the Israeli Government's Counselor for Congressional Affairs. Dor spoke about the strong relationship between the State of Israel and the U.S. Congress, and discussed the responsibilities of his job as Israel's envoy to the Senate and the House of Representatives.
We then went to Capitol Hill, where we visited the office of New York Senator Chuck Schumer. We met there with Pat Gonzalez, the Senator's foreign policy staffer. To our surprise, Pat was very educated on the issues we were lobbying for and he was the one who did most of the talking during our meeting. Pat discussed the recent agreement with Iran, and explained why he and everyone in Senator Schumer's office felt it was a bad deal. He repeatedly stressed the strong need for the Senate to immediately pass new sanctions on Iran, before the end of next week.
After the congressional meetings, we went to Congregation Kesher Yisrael of Georgetown for dinner and Maariv. We then boarded the bus and headed back to New York. The bus arrived back at YU at approximately 10:30PM, after a successful lobby mission.
It was truly a unique experience organizing and attending this mission to Washington. I hope all the YUHSB talmidim reading this article will join Hatzioni next Monday for a lunchtime event with Congresswoman Grace Meng and participate in the MTAPACmission to Washington next March.

Freshman Grade Goes to the Theater
On Wednesday night, the entire Freshman class was invited to attend a theater trip to YU to see the Yeshiva College Dramatics Society's production of the play "Terra Nova." The evening, which was organized and supervised by Mrs. Levitt, was a success on many levels.
After eating a delicious Carlos and Gabby's buffet supper, the students watched an exciting MTA wrestling match. We then walked over to YU's Schottenstein Center, where the theater is located, with our own security guard. Other teachers besides Mrs. Levitt who accompanied us for the program were Mr. Semach, Mrs. Siegfried, Mrs. Levitt, Mr. Toporovsky, Ms. Morahibi, and Mr. Gillers. Thanks to all. Special thanks as well to Mr. Shuey Jacoby, MTA's former Admissions Director, for surprising everyone by joining us for the event.
After the program, Ms. Lin Snyder, director of YCDS and this play, commented on how well behaved and interested the freshmen were and invited us to the spring show.
We also extend a special thanks to Mr. Dobrick who arranged a last minute bus to Brooklyn so that more students could stay.

Wrestling Team Has Busy Week
by Shai Cohen ('14)
It has been a very long week for MTA wrestlers. Starting with an all-day wrestling tournament on Sunday, the Lions have had three back-to-back wrestling events. First, the team attended a competitive public school tournament in Brooklyn on Sunday. At the tournament, they won numerous matches, including the first wins of the season for Johnathan Takhalov ('16), Alex Knapp ('17), Eli Frasko ('15) and Izzy Frasko ('16). Immediately following their long day at that tournament, on Monday, the Lion's crushed NYISE's wrestling team in the Bronx. Finally, on Wednesday, the team suffered a tough loss to the Martin Luther School, with a few close matches and one win. The Lions look forward to a successful tournament and match next week.
Varsity Basketball Cruises Past JEC by Ezra Teichman ('14)
On Motzei Shabbos, the Lions faced the JEC Thunder in Elizabeth. The Lions started off the game with an aggressive press and opened up a quick 8-2 lead. Led by Yoni Samet's 16 points, the Lions continued their strong play and took a 15 point lead into the locker room. The second half was much like the first. JEC had trouble breaking MTA's press and the Lions cruised to a 55-28 win.
Varsity Hockey Comes Up Short by Jeremy Borgen ('14)
On a late and snowy Sunday, the MTA Lions traveled to Bergen County to face the TABC Storm. The fans packed in and were expecting a game much like the Rangers-Devils game the night before. The game started off well for TABC, as they controlled the ball and put on constant pressure. scoring three early goals. TABC looked as if they were going to blow out MTA, as the game was just 5 minutes in at that point! MTA coaches Michael Heller and Moshe Jaroslawicz saw that something was wrong and realized they had to make some changes. After a quick timeout, the game was back in full swing, except this time, MTA looked a lot better. They closed the first period strong, keeping the score down to 3-0. The second period was a hard-faught one, but ended with no further scoring. The offensively deprived MTA Lions came into the 3rd period hoping for the best and looking for some sort of spark play to start a comeback, but it wasn't to be. As the 3rd period came to a close, MTA realized that if they want to beat TABC this year, it would have to be at home in January.
Varsity Hockey Lions Fall in OT by Jeremy Borgen ('14)
On Wednesday night, the MTA Lions welcomed the Frisch Cougars to the Den. The first time the two teams met, Frisch won 2-1, and MTA did not want a repeat of that. When the game started, MTA looked like a different team than last time. The offense was on fire, and the first period ended 3-2 in favor of MTA. The second period saw Ezra Quint completing his first hat trick of the season, but MTA let up another goal. With the score 4-3 going into the 3rd period, and the momentum on MTA's side, the Lions looked as if they were going to come out with a W. But Frisch was not going to let up easily, playing strong hockey and a power-play goal by Frisch tied the game up with less than 5 minutes left to play. After closing out the final minutes of the period, the Lions found themselves in a close game with Frisch yet again: 3 on 3, sudden death overtime - everyone on their toes! Both teams fired shot after shot, but no one was able to put one into the back of the net until Frisch scored on a shot from the point with just 2 minutes left in overtime. It was another tough loss for MTA. The Lions hope to keep the offense hot with a game at Ramaz on Monday. |
