MTA LEAD Begins this Week
by Avraham Orlian ('15)

On Monday, Associate Dean and Entrepreneur-in-Residence of the Sy Syms School of Business Michael Strauss, kicked off the MTA LEAD program. As part of his role with the business school, Dean Strauss is able to assist students who have a business proposal or idea, and he gives them the opportunity to work one-on-one with a successful entrepreneur to help refine their career aspirations, to develop or to launch successful entrepreneurial businesses, and to provide immediate access to practical, real world experience and perspectives.

MTA LEAD is a program designed to provide YUHSB students with lasting business and communal leadership skills through high school and university leadership training. Participants will be mentored by industry leaders, like Michael Strauss, and will be able to participate in the Doris and Dr. Ira Kukin Entrepreneurial and Executive Lecture Series of the Sy Syms School of Business. The program will accomplish its objective, in part, by empowering YUHSB students with the ability to build on their entrepreneurial ideas to create meaningful and sustainable business projects. Students will learn to work as a team and will gain invaluable lifelong skills.

Over the course of the program, students with business ideas will work to develop a presentation, while receiving mentoring from a Syms student and advice from a business leader. Syms professors will also lead some workshops on business communications and marketing. Ultimately, students will present to an Executive Council; the winning presentation receives an Amazon gift card and present at the college business plan competition. Additionally, the Executive Council will work to try to find a business leader who can serve as a long-term mentor. Last year's winner, Tsahi Halyo ('16), created a proposal for a USB watch.

Dean Strauss ended his presentation by giving the audience his contact information, so that if they have ideas or proposals, they could and should contact him.

More information about the program, as well as the program brochure, can be found at yuhsb.org/mta-lead.

Moshe Frid Celebrates a Siyum on First Section of Kitzur Shulchan Aruch

Moshe Frid, a 9th Grade student in Rabbi Eli Cohn's Shiur, celebrated the completion of the first section of Kitzur Shulchan Aruch this past Wednesday. The milestone was honored in Shiur with Rabbis Taubes, Bechoffer, Green, Schenker and Cohn in attendance. Rabbi Taubes opened the program by praising Moshe for taking the initiative to learn on his own time and then noting how doing so is crucial to developing as a ben torah. Moshe then completed this volume of the Kitzur by learning the last se'if of Hilchos Tzedakah together with the Shiur. Moshe's classmates responded with spontaneous singing and applause, wishing him mazel tov, and enjoying the doughnuts that were brought to mark the occasion. We are looking forward to Moshe's next siyum!
The Seniors Go To Broadway
by Shai Cohen ('14)

On Wednesday, November 13, the senior class took a trip to Broadway to see Terence Rattigan's The Winslow Boy. This critically acclaimed play is about a young boy, Ronnie Winslow, who is expelled from the Royal Naval College for allegedly stealing a five-shilling postal order. Convinced of Ronnie's innocence, Ronnie's father, Arthur Winslow, exerts all his energy in an attempt to clear his son's name. With the help of the most highly sought after barrister in all of England, the Winslow family fights the accusation and manages to have the charges dropped. Although the Winslows accomplish their goal of saving Ronnie's reputation, the process takes a heavy toll on them all. From the emotional, physical and financial stress of the ordeal Arthur's health deteriorates, his daughter's engagement is broken, his older son's tuition money is used up, and his own marriage suffers.

This long but thought-provoking play causes the audience to ponder one main question: How far should people go to protect those that they love? The high-caliber actors, especially Roger Rees, were very successful in delivering this message to the audience in a captivating and entertaining way. We'd like to thank Rabbi Brownstein, Mrs. Levitt, Mr. Dobrick and the other faculty members that were involved in creating this trip, which is the third Broadway production many of us have seen with MTA.
Torah Bowl Starts 3-1
by Gabi Rosenthal ('14)

On Tuesday our Torah Bowl team began their season with their first meet in RAMAZ. Our first game was against TABC; after staying close with them for most of the game, TABC pulled away towards the end and secured the win.

After that loss, we regrouped and came back to win our next three matches against SAR, MDY, and RAMAZ. We were led by our two senior captains, Aryeh Klein and Yitzy Lindenbaum, and freshman breakout star Yair Caplan.

JV Hockey Captures First Win of Season
by Tani Rosenthal ('16)

The MTA Lions were hosting the Hillel Heat for the second meeting of the season between the two teams. Hillel took the first game 3-1 and MTA came in still looking for their first win of the season. With MTA's starting goalie Tani Rosenthal out with a concussion, Jacob Boim started in net. MTA came out strong firing many shots on net, but could not score. Hillel scored late in the first period on a wrap around and led 1-0 after the first. Halfway through the second period Zack Borgen scored his second goal of the season on a rebound. Thirty seconds later, on the power play, Captain Eli Richland scored a one timer off of a beautiful pass from Zack Borgen. MTA was up after two, 2-1. In the third, Zack Borgen scored two  more goals to complete the hat trick! MTA won 4-2 for their first win of the season.

Varsity Basketball Loses a Close One
by Ezra Teichman ('14)

On Motzaei Shabbos, the Lions faced the Frisch Cougars in the first of their two matchups this season. Frisch scored the first few buckets of the game but the Lions quickly gained their composure and took a small lead headed into the second quarter. Led by the great scoring and rebounding of Eli Lipner (10 points), the Lions had a comfortable nine point lead at the half. Unfortunately, after playing just two minutes in the second half, Eli Lipner had to leave the game with an injured arm. After that, the Lions had trouble scoring but still retained a 38-35 after the third. In the fourth, though, Frisch pulled away as MTA had trouble breaking their press and scoring. The final score was 47-40 in favor of Frisch. The Lions next face TABC on Monday night at 8:00.

Varsity Hockey - Tough Loss
by Jesse Schwalb ('14)

This past Wednesday night, the MTA Lions varsity hockey team visited the DRS Wildcats for a rematch of last year's semifinal game. After we arrived a bit later than planned, the game had finally begun. Midway through the first period, the Lions took a one goal lead as Ezra Quint scored his first goal of the season with the assist from Daniel Jaroslawicz. Then, with just seventeen seconds left in the first period, the Wildcats tied it up. It was a devastating blow, but the Lions kept fighting. Unfortunately, the Wildcats put in one more goal in the second period and neither team was able to score in the third period as DRS stole a win from the Lions 2-1. The Lions are looking to start a hot streak when they play JEC at home this Wednesday.
