We have so much talent among the boys here at MTA, it's a shame when some students, midyear, express their remorse over not being involved in our plethora of extra-curricular activities.  How to solve the problem? Hold an extra-curricular fair! The idea for the fair was not new, but logistical complications prevented it from happening in the past.

This past Tuesday, though, with the help of the Student Council, we were able to host a very successful Club Fair. Over 200 of our students came through the lunch-time presentation to browse through the 40+ stations set up by our different clubs, teams, and publications. This was the perfect opportunity for the entire student body to learn about all of our clubs and get involved. It even led to the forming of some new clubs which have not yet been finalized, but are on the way to becoming official.

New clubs this year include Out of Bounds, our sports magazine, and the Outdoors Club, which has already hosted 3 hikes this year, and will be slack-lining every week during lunch breaks.

It's wonderful to see so many students engage themselves in such a wide variety of activities beyond the classroom. The experiences our students gain from their extracurricular involvement helps them grow as mature, responsible, and passionate bnai torah.

The Great Debate and Cross-Examination

by CJ Glicksman ('16)

This past Tuesday night, the debate team had a meeting to decide on a topic for the annual Great Debate. Additionally, they focused on  how to correctly conduct a cross-examination. The meeting started off in the library where many different debate topics were suggested as possibilities for the Great Debate. Each person who suggested a topic spoke about the two sides of the argument. The topics ranged from the morality of using animals for experiments to Obamacare.

The next part of the meeting was an explanation of how to succeed when conducting a cross-examination. Mrs. Levitt graciously invited an experienced college debater to speak to the team about cross-examining, and she explained the "do"s and "don't"s of cross, giving the team a much better understanding of how they can excel in this phase of the debate. The meeting then ended with a few more suggested Great Debate topics and then ma'ariv.

The Great Debate topic was not chosen at the meeting, but was voted on this past Thursday, at lunch. The winning topic will be announced shortly, and tryouts for the Great Debate will be held soon.

Yeshiva Fellowship Eruv Tour

This week, the freshmen participating in the Yeshiva Fellowship had the z'chus to learn about the laws and requirements of an eruv from Rav Yosef Gavriel Bechoffer, who is an MTA rebbe and a world renowned expert in hilchos eruvin., having written several seforim on the topic.

The students later got to apply what they learned from Rav Bechoffer when they went to examine the Passaic, NJ eruv. The students went around Passaic, along with Rabbi Danto, director of the Yeshiva Fellowship, Rav Bechoffer, and Rav Shotkin, who has been for working the past several months on improving the Passaic eruv

The students carefully examined a few parts of the eruv to check for problems that might exist. The students were able to learn about and use some of Rav Shotkin's special equipment to make sure that the eruv is absolutely perfect, such as an optical plummet to check if a particular part of the eruv is exactly in place.

The students had a great time learning so much about the halachos of eruvin, especially because they were then able to apply that knowledge in a practical setting.

UPDATE
Varsity Basketball Loses to TABC
by Ezra Teichman ('14)

After a great first outing against the Rambam Ravens, the Lions faced a much tougher opponent in the TABC Storm. The Lions played a solid defensive first half but could not convert on the offensive end and found themselves trailing 19-12 going into the break. In the second half the Lions continued there strong defensive play but were unable to put enough points on the board to mount a successful comeback. The final score was 40-30 in favor of TABC. Eli Lipner was the leading scorer with 14 points.
