Rabbi Yosef Mendelevich addresses MTA Students
by Amiel Katz ('16)

On Thursday, we had the privilege of hearing from Rabbi Yosef Mendelevich, a Jewish refusenik from the Soviet Union. Rabbi Mendelevich related his amazing and inspiring story about how he tried to practice Judaism under great duress in a land where doing so was illegal, despite coming from a home which was not observant, and then subsequently tried to escape the country by hijacking a plane and flying to Israel. Although he was caught and sent to a labor camp in Siberia, the entire time he was there he never forgot that he was Jewish and how much that meant to him. He spoke about how he was able to smuggle in a Siddur, a Chumash and Tzitizis and even went on a hunger strike when his religious articles were confiscated, all in an effort to show the Soviet Union and the world that he was Jewish and would practice Judaism no matter what. He also refused to work on Shabbos, despite the harsh punishments which this brought upon him. He simply was unafraid of the Soviet authorities even in  the prison camp, and remained positive, proud and confident about everything that happened to him throughout his incredible ordeal. It is for this reason, as Rabbi Taubes said in his introduction, that he is a true modern day Jewish hero. His story was a truly inspiring tale of mesiras nefesh and we were grateful to have such an amazing person in our school.

The Passing of a Gadol - Rav Ovadyah Yosef z"l

by Zev Markowitz ('15)

This week, on Monday morning, Klal Yisrael lost one of its greatest Torah leaders Rav Ovadyah Yosef (often referred to as Chacham Ovadyah), former Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Eretz Yisrael.  Not only did he lead the Jewish world in terms of his incredibly extensive Torah knowledge and inspiration, he led many Jews, especially Sephardim, with a political party that has played a big role in Medinat Yisrael.  After shiur on Monday, the school had an assembly to commemorate his passing.  Rabbi Taubes spoke about how Rav Ovadyah influenced the world of learning with his clear and remarkably comprehensive teshuvos and piskei halachah, and noted that although few of us as high school students have learned directly from his seforim, they have been and are used by many of our Rebbeim.  Rav Mordechai Willig, Rosh Yeshiva at YU, then spoke to us, as he had a personal connection with Rav Ovadyah. He related how great a Talmid Chacham he was, possessing unique expertise in all areas of Torah, with the ability to quote by heart from the writings of so many of the great Torah authorities of the past, and he then shared Rav Ovadyah's life story with us.  It was truly inspirational to hear how totally he immersed himself in Torah since arriving in Eretz Yisrael as a young boy and how much he was able to accomplish and contribute.   Hopefully his Torah will continue on and may we all have the zechus to continue to learn from his teachings.

Incredible Freshman Hike

On October 9th, MTA's freshman class put on their hiking boots and made the trek up Carris Hill in Norvin Green State Park. Lead by Activity Coordinators Extraordinaire Rabbi Jon Green and Mr. Yosef Gillers, the students worked to find the beauty in nature - "mah rabu maasecha Hashem."

An awesome and educational time was had by all!

Be sure to check out the video put together by Mr Gillers from the hike.

First Novice Debate of the Year
by Meir Barg ('16)

This past Tuesday, the Debate Club kicked off with a new surge of novice debaters excellently arguing their sides of the issue. Up for debate this time was the abolishment of the death penalty.

For the past three weeks, novice debaters have been preparing affirmative and negative points for the debate. They practiced with experienced debaters and even argued in mock debates. The time finally came this week when they would show their skills and passionately express their views.

After being invigorated by a pizza dinner, the novices went to their respective rooms where they would be judged by experienced debaters. The novices performed to perfection, emulating the great speakers they practiced to be. They presented their arguments strategically and defended themselves expertly.

Congratulations to all of the novice debaters who made MTA proud. Congratulations to Yehuda Goldberg ('17) on being the first-placed debater. Thank you to all of the judges, timekeepers, and observers who helped out with the debate. Of course, thank you to Mrs. Levitt, our esteemed debate coach, because without her expert coaching, MTA would not have the spectacular debate team we have today.
