Six Students Named National Merit Scholarship Commended Students
Shai Cohen, Aaron Schwartz-Messing, Binyomin Shtaynberger, Ezra Teichman, Efraim Tepler and Noam Zolty have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. This is in addition to the six other YUHSB students already named National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2014 competition for Nation Merit Scholarship awards, the Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Meet the Israeli Author Gets Off to a Great Start
by Asher Finkelstein ('15)

This past Tuesday, members of the "Meet the Israeli Author" class had the privilege of speaking with well-known Israeli writer Chanah Bat Shahar via Skype. In this remarkable elective course, the participants work on writing a short story in Hebrew throughout the year and receive critiques and guidance from the award-winning Israeli author on a monthly basis. Students who participated in the program last year were in attendance this week as well and they were presented with newly produced copies of the publication containing their short stories by Rabbi Taubes and Dr. Taylor.
Chanah Bat Shahar began by telling us a little about herself. She is a member of the Chareidi community in Israel, is married to a well-known Rosh Yeshiva, and writes under a pen name to avoid the censure of certain factions within the Israeli Jewish community. Her stories and writings are acclaimed in Israel, and she has received the noted Prime Minister's Prize recognizing her work. She then asked us questions about what we like to read. After that, we asked her a number of questions about her political views, interests, and the like. Many of her responses were fascinating. I look forward to continuing to participate in this great program.

Sophomores Start Mishmar Early - at Breakfast!
by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)

This past Wednesday morning, all members of the sophomore grade were privileged to have a special breakfast with the YU Madrichim with whom they will be learning on Thursday nights for mishmar. After a few minutes of conversation, breakfast was served, which included: delicious eggs, pastries, bagels and orange juice. The sophomores and Madrichim, along with some Rebbeim, ate together and had a great opportunity to introduce, get to know and speak with each other. The breakfast overall was a huge success and we are looking forward to learning a lot with our Madrichim during Mishmar this semester.

First Mishmar of the Year is Held by Efraim Tepler ('14)
The first Thursday night mishmar took place last night in MTA. Instead of rushing to the buses after the sixth period bell, students headed to their respective shiur rooms where they were treated to special shiurim which included talks about this week's parsha and lessons about life. Rabbi Mendelson's shiur, as well as the Beis Midrash Katan shiurim, were subsequently privileged to enjoy a special late night mishmar program in the Glueck Beis Midrash at YU. Practically every table in the beis midrash was filled with excited talmidim from various divisions of the yeshiva; the passion in the air was palpable. After learning b'chavrusa and taking their weekly Gemara quiz, BMKers took the stairs up to the third floor lobby to hear Rabbi Schmulowitz deliver a fun and interesting "schmooze" about the symbolism of the rainbow in Parshas Noach. Following maariv, delicious cholent was served to all! The blend of intense Gemara learning, informative and fascinating shiurim, and great food made for an unforgettable opening mishmar.

Students Meet with Ambassador Oren by Rafael Anapolle ('15)
This past Tuesday night, three MTA students, David Aaronson, Nethanel Niazoff, and Rafael Anapolle, attended a panel discussion with journalists Gary Rosenblatt and Yossi Klein HaLevi, and featuring Ambassador Michael Oren. Ambassador Oren is an American-born Israeli historian, author, and the former Israeli Ambassador to the United States. He has written books, articles, and essays on Middle Eastern history, and is the author of the famous book, Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East. He was also a Distinguished Fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem and a contributing editor to The New Republic.
Before the event started, the students had the unique opportunity to meet Ambassador Oren and speak with him. The event then began with a well-deserved "thank you" to Ambassador Oren for his having served as the Israeli Ambassador to the United States. Later, the discussion shifted more towards Yossi Klein HaLevi, who, at the event, released his new book about the Six Day War, Like Dreamers. Mr. Klein HaLevi and Ambassador Oren then spoke a bit about their everlasting friendship throughout the years and how they both helped each other out whenever either one was in need. Towards the end of the event, Ambassador Oren, as a diplomat, was pressured to talk a little about politics. He gave a very Zionistic speech about the reasons why Israel is our true homeland and why we will not give it up for anyone or anything. He explained in detail that Jews, after the horrible Holocaust, came to Israel because they had no place to go. Once the UN declared the establishment of the State of Israel, the Jews would not give up that land for anyone.
It was truly a once in a lifetime experience that these MTA students were so lucky to have available to them.
