CONGRATS, CLASS OF 2013!
On Thursday evening, parents, families, friends, faculty, and the YU administration gathered for the 93rd annual Commencement Exercises of Yeshiva University High School for Boys. With Rabbi Taubes presiding, the graduates transformed from students to alumni. Remarks were also given by YU President Richard Joel, who congratulated the students and their families, charged them with making a difference in the world, and noted that this graduation marked the 45th anniversary of his own graduation from MTA. The singing of the Star Spangled Banner and Hatikva were led by the YUHSB Choir, who performed again later in the program; the YUHSB band performed during the musical interlude as well. The The Invocation was presented by Akiva Schiff, Benediction by Yoni Schwartz, and Siyum by Dovid Schwartz. Congratulations to Salutatorian Dani Kurtz and to Valedictorian Yisrael Snow, as well as to all the graduates of the Class of 2013! In addition to the many awards given, two new awards were presented this year. Dr. Harold Fluss presented the Hersh and Fannie Fluss Memorial Award for Excellence in Nach to Jesse Tawil and the the Hersh and Fannie Fluss Memorial Award for Excellence in Hebrew Literature to Sammy Raskas.
Following the Commencement program, a special reception was held in Weissberg Commons. Special thanks to Mrs. Rachel Ciment and the YU Office of Student Life for providing the Class of 2013 sunglasses that were presented to graduates.
We look forward to hearing about and sharing in many great accomplishments from the graduates... as we know, Lions4Life!

Seniors Head to the Poconos for an Action Packed Final Trip
On Monday morning immediately following davening, the Seniors boarded the awaiting Monsey Trails busses to take off for their final trip as MTA students. The first stop was to play broomball, a unique and entertaining sport that takes place on ice. After lunch, the group headed to gymnastics where they had the chance to run, jump, flip, and race; there was also a large climbing wall. While rain hampered Mr. Giller's extreme team building challenge that was planned, the Seniors headed to Cong. Etz Chaim in Livingston, NJ for mincha, a small learning session with the rebbeim, and a pizza dinner. After this, the seniors finally headed to Split Rock Resort, where they and would be staying in private villas. The gym, basketball court, racquetball/walleyball courts were all opened for the night. At 11:30pm, everyone gathered for maariv and a bbq. Rabbi Tani Cohen then led an inspiring late night kumzits. Day 2 started early with davening and breakfast. Immediately after this, buses were waiting to take the group to the Delaware River for an afternoon of white-water rafting. The eight miles that were rowed were filled with intense inter-raft water fights and other enjoyable rivalries. The boats pulled off to the shore in the middle for lunch. Upon return to the hotel, the fields, outdoor courts, and mini-golf were open. After mincha, a learning session and a bbq dinner, the pool was open for the night. Taking advantage of this, the seniors participated in many hilarious games of "Wah." (For more on "Wah," please find a Senior). After maariv that night, chulent was served. Finally, on their last night together as the MTA senior class, Mr. Gillers and Shuey led a nostalgic kumzits with some singing, and lots of memories, stories, and feelings being shared. After davening and a quick learning session in the morning, the students packed up and headed to Skirmish USA, one of the world's largest paintball facilities with over 50 courses over 700 acres, for an afternoon of paint battles. About halfway through, they returned to base for lunch and refreshments. After paintball, dinner was served and the group headed to Wallington Lanes, their final destination. Finally, they returned home exhausted and fulfilled, ready to graduate. May more pictures available on Flickr.

Dr. Thomas Otway Explains Caustics to Honors College Cohorts
by Binyomin Shtaynberger ('14)
This past Tuesday, the Honors College cohorts met in Belfer Hall for a presentation by Dr. Thomas Otway, Professor of Mathematics at Yeshiva University. The fascinating program was titled "Sunlight Falling on a Cup of Coffee." The general scope of the program was an analysis of caustics, which are a special type of light reflection, and the cohorts focused mainly on the shapes, angles, and brightness that are caused by different scenarios.
In addition to the incredible amount of math and scientific knowledge provided, Dr. Otway also provided plenty of historical references- most interesting for those who were not fully capable of understanding the brilliant mathematical processes of Da Vinci and other great thinkers. Dr. Otway concluded the session by offering practical usages for the understanding of caustics, such as using them to prove that a planet is similar to earth because Dr. Otway explained that gravity could somewhat be equated to caustics.
The session was very enlightening and showed all that within even the simplest of everyday occurrences, such as light hitting a cup of coffee, there is a great amount of understanding and knowledge that could be gained.

Students in "Meet the Israeli Author" Complete Their Short Stories by Dovid Ort ('14)
This past Monday, the 6 students of the "Meet the Israeli Author" class had our final meeting with our professional mentor, acclaimed Israeli author Chana Bat-Shachar.
After a year of writing, crafting, editing and tweaking our stories with our instructor Morah Haibi and through our virtual workshop via Skype with Chana, we have finally completed our stories. In our last session we discussed a few final changes and we then had the opportunity to converse with Chana and ask her any questions that we had. We briefly discussed her brand new book עץ הדודא and then we each shared our reflections about our experience in this unique course.
Overall, it has been an excellent year; the course has enhanced both our written and spoken Hebrew, we discovered our creative talents in writing, developed a very unique relationship with Chana Bat-Shachar and we all have the completed short stories we wrote. Thank you to Morah Haibi, Mrs. Rosenberg and Chana Bat-Shachar for the time, assistance and input in the entire process.
We are excited that our "Meet the Israeli Author" journal is archived in the National Library of Israel and that the publication has now become part of their "Periodicals Department" in Jerusalem, Israel.

Juniors Enjoy Trip Day
On Wednesday, the Junior class shiurim enjoyed a day to celebrate the end of the year. Rabbi Mendelson's shiur headed out to play an intense game of softball, where Shlomo Mirsky impressed with his pitching and hitting skills, while the other shiurim headed out to Newark, NJ to watch the Newark Bears take on the Trois-Rivieres Aigles. Rabbi Danto got the game underway, throwing out the first pitch. With the small fan turnout for a mid-week afternoon game, the MTA students were able to participate in a number of the on-field activities that took place between innings. Sadly, the Bears fell 5-0, but the students greatly enjoyed the bonding opportunity.

MTA Comes Out On Top at the "Captains Debate"
by Meir Barg ('16)
Last Tuesday night, MTA held a "Captains Debate," in which the best debaters from Central, Flatbush, and MTA competed. The debate kicked off with a delicious Carlos and Gabby's dinner and then it was time to debate. The style of the debate was impromptu, meaning that upon entering each round, debate partners would be given a topic that they had not prepared to debate. They then had to debate in favor or against the resolution. Being the top debaters from their schools, the debaters argued excellently and presented their points to their true potential.
The second round followed the same format as the first, except the names of debaters from all the schools were randomly matched up with each other. This presented an even greater challenge to the debaters because most of them were debating with students from other schools, whom they had never met before. However, since these were the finest debaters, they easily overcame the challenge. After both rounds of the competition were completed, it was time for the award ceremony.
Congratulations to Simcha Brodsky ('15) and Asher Finkelstein ('15) for winning the second placed debater awards, and to President Dovid Schwartz ('13) for winning the first placed debater award! Congratulations to Dovid Schwartz ('13), Yehuda Brick ('13), Yitzi Lindenbaum ('14), Asher Finkelstein ('15), Simcha Brodsky ('15), and Jake Spector ('15) for debating to perfection and making MTA proud!
Thank you to all of the amazing timekeepers and of course to our esteemed debate coach Mrs. Levitt whose vast knowledge and expertise continues to empower the team.

Arista Hosts Study Night in Advance of Finals
by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)
On Wednesday night, the entire second floor was filled with teachers and Arista Honors Society students helping other students review for their final exams. A special pizza dinner was served to all who attended. There were three sessions throughout the evening in which students had the option of either reviewing in a class with a teacher or we could have taken a more personal approach to review, where a junior Arista student held a one on one review for a particular exam. On a personal level, I found the Study Night incredibly helpful for my studying needs. Also on behalf of the entire group of students who took advantage of this excellent review source, I would like to thank all the teachers and juniors that were there to assist, carving out time in order to help us before finals. Special thanks to Mrs. Levitt for coordinating this event.
