Annual Names, Not Numbers Dinner filled with Emotion and Inspiration
by Moshe Bochner ('13)
On Wednesday night, the annual Names, Not Numbers (NNN) dinner took place in Yeshiva University's Belfer Hall. The event was a culmination of the work done by students, teachers, videographers, and most importantly, the Holocaust survivors who were interviewed by the students. In September, seniors in the NNN elective began an oral history project on the Holocaust. Students who participated in this program were privileged to take part in several unique educational experiences, such as visiting The Jewish Heritage Museum in downtown Manhattan and learning about the ethical will from the museum's Dr. Paul Rudansky; they had a discussion about interviewing techniques with journalist Jacqueline Rivkin, lessons on videography and film-making from Mauricio Arenas and several lessons on the historical context of the Holocaust from historian and former MTA history instructor, Dr. Geoffrey Cahn. Just recently, they heard a lecture about the importance of passing on the stories of Holocaust survivors from noted Holocaust scholar Dr. Michael Berenbaum.
In February, over thirty seniors were privileged to interview eight Holocaust survivors. These interviews, in which the survivors told the stories of how they escaped Nazi occupied Europe and lived to see a world in which they could be proud to openly practice Judaism, were filmed professionally. The interviews were then edited by the students for conciseness. On Wednesday, the final video documentary of the students' experience in interviewing the survivors, as well as selected clips from the interviews, was screened for the survivors, students, faculty, and families. In addition to the emotional and inspirational film, the 180 guests heard divrei Torah and speeches from Rabbi Taubes, program founder Mrs. Tova Fish-Rosenberg, and program coordinator Dr. Cahn, as well as word of reflection from Senior Moshe Bochner, who had interviewed two of his grandparents. At the end, the survivors were presented with the videos of their interviews and took pictures with their interviewees. The night was one filled with emotion, inspiration, and displays of strength and Jewish pride. Thank you to all those who participated in this program and to those who attended the dinner. A special thanks to Mrs. Fish- Rosenberg, Dr. Cahn, Mrs. Rosenstock, and Mrs. Weschler for organizing the event. More pictures available on Flickr.

Students Attend Premiere of The Pioneers
by Binyamin Pfeiffer ('13)
On Tuesday night, 16 students along with Rabbi Eli Cohn, the Hatzioni faculty advisor, traveled to the Loews Theater on 68th street to attend the premiere of the "The Pioneers," a new film based on Ambassador Yehuda Avner's famous book "The Prime Minsters." It was a very well done film that portrayed the political terms of Golda Meir and Levi Eshkol. Famous guests in attendance included Ambassador Avner himself, Tommy Hilfiger, Dudik from Golan, and the producers and directors of the movie. It was a truly worthwhile experience.

Ulpan Students Have Extensive Hebrew Conversations for Final Project
by Dovid Baum ('13)
This past week was the last full week of General Studies classes for seniors, and it was a perfect week to celebrate all the progress Morah Haibi's Hebrew ulpan class had made in their preparation for their year in Israel. In order to test the progress of the students, they each had a full conversation in Hebrew with someone to whom they had previously spoken only in English. Fortunately, MTA is filled with a number of faculty members who are fluent in Hebrew and were willing to volunteer their time to help the students. Each student had a conversation with either Rabbi Taubes, Rabbi Schenker, Rabbi Richter, Mrs. Rosenberg, or, of course, Ms. Haibi. Students were asked what their plans for next year were, what they like to eat, and anything the faculty member could think of. Students were also encouraged to ask their own questions. The conversations were a huge success as the students proved how much Hebrew speaking ability they gained in one year.

Yishai Fleischer, Sole English Language Radio Host in Israel, Visits MTA
by Yoni Kornblau ('15)
This past Thursday during lunch, students had the opportunity to hear from Yishai Fleischer, the only English language radio host in Israel. Before he actually began speaking, he gave out a CD that has a compilation of 16 Zionistic/pro Aliyah themed songs to everybody who came. He then began to tell us his life story including how he joined the Israeli army. He explained that the incredible feeling one gets from protecting and building the Jewish State, especially through the army, is the best feeling in the world. He also encouraged all of us to consider moving to Israel when the time is right, to learn Torah there, and to help settle and build the land. After he finished speaking we had a Q and A session in which he answered questions about post-Israel Israeli yeshivas, the IDF and his own personal life. It was a great program, and thanks go to Hatzioni and Mr. Fleischer for making it happen.

LIONS UPDATE

Soccer Lions Fall in Quarter-Finals
by Shaya Kestenbaum ('14)
For the third time in three years, the Lions faced the North Shore Stars in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. Playing in a large gym posed its problems for the Lions, as quick shifts were necessary for maintaining stamina. The North Shore fans came out in good numbers, and for the first time all season, the Lions were playing in front of a large and noisy crowd. The Stars struck first, but MTA quickly tied up the game at 1. A 2-2 game quickly ballooned to 4-2 in favor of the home team at halftime. Zak Lenik and David Bramson both scored second half goals, but it proved to be too little too late for the Lions, who were not able to pull of the upset. The final score was 9-5 in favor of North Shore.
Tennis Lions Win Two Big Matches
by Ezra Teichman ('14)
On Monday night, the Lions defeated North Shore for the first time in over a decade. The Lions scored relatively easy victories by both doubles teams and by their top player Ives Herman ('13). The drama came from Singles 2 and 3 where Avi Rabinovitch ('13) grinded out a tight 10-9 tiebreak victory and Akiva Gottlieb ('14), in his singles debut, showed shades of brilliance despite falling just short.
On Wednesday night, the Lions faced the HAFTR Hawks. Both of the doubles teams took care of business with relative ease. After being up big, Ives Herman allowed his opponent to make a small comeback. However, he was able to pull out a 10-9 victory. The highlight of the night was the play of Akiva Gottlieb. After being down 9-6, Akiva went on a furious 5-0 run to win the match 11-9. The Lions won all 5 matches and sit at 4-2 as they get ready to face Magen David on Monday night.
JV Softball Lions Can't Handle the Heat
by Jeremy Borgen ('15)
On Sunday, the JV Softball Lions traveled to Deal, New Jersey to take on the Hillel Heat, a very respectable team. The game started off on the wrong foot, and Hillel was up 5-0 after the third inning. But the Lions wouldn't give up. Zev Markowitz had two deep hits, Steven Stein had a beautiful RBI triple, and Yoni Schechter had a nice double. However, these hits were not enough and the Lions fell 7-1.
