Hillel Jacobson ('15) faces challenges and acts on them.
In his study of Shakespeare's Macbeth, Hillel took a strong interest in the Globe Theater, where the plays were performed. Along with his father, Hillel constructed a model of the theater, capturing the beauty and intricacies of the stages and seating as well as the area where the groundlings stood.
Recently, when studying King Lear in Mrs. Harriet Levitt's English Sophomore Honors class, Hillel became fascinated by the stocks-a punishment apparatus used in the story to hold Kent. With the help of his father, Hillel constructed a solid wood, five-foot structure, replicating the stocks used in King Lear.
"The study of Shakespeare is not limited to the famous lines," said Mrs. Levitt. "It incorporates all the stage devices that enlarge the imagination. Reading 'Kent is put in the stocks' is not as meaningful as actually seeing Kent put into stocks."
She added, "If a picture is worth a thousand words, the actual object is worth many more."

Ulpan Class Takes a Trip to Just Kosher
by Dovid Baum ('13)
Tuesday was no ordinary day for Morah Haibiʼs 12th grade Hebrew Ulpan elective. In class, the students were learning how to converse at a supermarket; to assist with the learning process, the boys visited the popular "Just Kosher" supermarket, located across the street from MTA. "The goal of the trip was to see what shopping is like in an Israeli supermarket with Israeli brands," informed Morah Haibi.
Each student in the class was asked to fill out a list under the heading of either an Israeli brand such as Elite or a category of the supermarket such as מאפה, The Bakery. There were many more activities as well, such as filling out a map of the store. Mrs. Rosenberg and Rabbi Taubes, who have spent time in real Israeli supermarkets, were on the scene to enlighten any student who needed help. Rabbi Taubes stated that this trip is important because "next year, when most of our graduates go to a Yeshiva in Israel, they will be able to buy food at a local supermarket in case they want to supplement their yeshiva menu. They can apply what they learned today to their experience next year in Israel."
The trip was capped off with a background description by Rabbi Taubes on the origins of Wissotzky Tea. The company was founded in 1849 by Kalonimus Wolf, a student in the Volozhiner yeshiva who quickly became the king of tea in Russia. He donated billions of dollars (in today's money) to Jewish causes and his descendents eventually moved the company to Israel.
When all was said and done, the trip was a huge success. Besides enjoying themselves and learning some applicable Hebrew, the students had an opportunity to bond with faculty outside of school in a more relaxed environment such as "Just Kosher."

Students Participate in Kukin Lecture Series
A s part of the new MTA LEAD program, which MTA in partnership with the Sy Syms School of Business offers to students interested in business and entrepreneurship, high school students are invited to select lectures of the Doris & Dr. Ira Kukin Entrepreneurial and Executive Lecture Series.
Earlier today, students had the opportunity to hear from Saul Orbach, an experienced entrepreneur who recently served as Founder and COO of Aguru Images, Inc., a company that offers tools to allow for realistic 3D digital imaging in products such as movies and video games. More recently he has been heavily involved in social entrepreneurship projects.
Mr. Orbach took the students through his own background and shared insights and learnings from his own career, which has included stops on Wall Street, in Israeli tech startups, and with venture capital funds as well. He explained how entrepreneurs must spend time identifying and reseraching a need, understanding both how people are currently working around the problem and how the entrepreneur's solution adds value.
Mr. Orbach concluded with a couple of short divrei torah, explaining that the hebrew letters of simcha can be repositioned into machshava; joy comes from the mind.
Special thanks to Dr. Steven Nissenfeld and the Syms leadership for helping launch this program.

Soccer Lions Prevail in Must Win Game
by Noam Zolty ('14)
This past Tuesday night, the MTA Soccer Lions took on the Flatbush Falcons in a must win game. The game started out as a defensive battle as each team was scoreless after one quarter. After falling behind 1-0, an incredible goal by Dor Rondel ('1) tied the game up. The Lions were able to continue their elite defense and went into the half tied at 1. In the second half, the Lions came out storming, scoring 3 quick goals to take a 4-1 lead. Although the Falcons tried to come back, the Lions eventually prevailed to take the 7- 4 win. The Lions were led by senior Zak Lenik (2 Goals), and Rondel (2 Goals). The Lions hope to use this momentum to carry them after Pesach break.
