Junior Trip Another Incredible Experience
by Efraim Tepler ('14)
On Wednesday and Thursday, MTA took the Junior class for their annual grade trip. The trip started with a visit to a bowling alley, where Rabbi Green proceeded to prove just how much better of a bowler he is than anybody else; while Akiva Pudell bowled a Turkey in the middle of a five strike in a row stretch.

Following this, we traveled to a sports multiplex where we were served some delicious pizza. At the multiplex, we had the opportunity to play sports such as laser tag and whirly ball (a combination of basketball and lacrosse, in bumper cars) as well as more standard options such as baseball and football. Congratulations to Ezra Teichman, who totally dominated the whirly ball circuit, leading all scorers with an average of three goals per game.

Then, we headed to a local snowtubing course where everyone tried to topple down the hill in the most imaginative ways possible. After davening and learning in a local yeshiva, we ended up the night heading to a resort where we enjoyed a late night swim, barbecue, and either a kumsitz with Rabbi Mendelson or a meditation session with Benny Rofeh, a member of our guidance staff.

The next morning after davening, we spent some time at the resort's fantastic indoor water park, followed by a trip to an ice rink to play an amazing new sport called broom ball. All in all, it was a great trip, and the entire grade very much enjoyed the bonding experience. Thank you to Rabbi Green for coordinating another incredible experience.
Career Month Kicks Off; Mr. Mark Newman Speaks to Juniors

by Ari Brown ('14)

This past Monday, the junior class had the pleasure of being addressed by Mr. Mark Newman, a Supervising Revenue Officer at the US Treasury's IRS Brooklyn office. This was the first of a series of lectures to be given by parents as part of career month. Mr. Newman joined the IRS after seeing an ad in a newspaper; his job involves collecting taxes that have not been paid by April 15th. He told us that the most important thing when working is to do something important to you. Mr. Newman explained that if you don't enjoy your job, no matter how smart you are, you won't do well. It was a very interesting lecture and we thank Mr. Newman for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak to us.
Impressive College Statistics for MTA Graduates

According to statistics recently released to us by the YU Office of Admissions, MTA students consist of over 9% of the total male undergraduate population at Yeshiva University, which, understandably, makes it the largest feeder school - by far - to YU.

Astoundingly, there are currently 29 MTA alums in the YU Honors program; the next closest school has under 20.  Continuing in this tradition, MTA made up the largest group of Honors applicants this year with 22 new applicants!

While 60-70% of our graduates choose to attend YU or YU Honors, our students who have opted to apply elsewhere have continued to succeed. While college acceptances for the Class of 2013 are not yet known, students from the class of 2012 were admitted to Columbia University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, Cooper Union, New York University, NYU Polytechnic, MaCaulay Honors, University of Maryland Honors ,Rutgers Honors and Brandeis University, in addition to, of course, to YU.

Our College Guidance department, under the leadership of Mr. Murray Sragow, continues to provide premiere guidance to our students.
Rabbi Kerner's Shiur Spends Shabbos in Monsey
by Moshe Bochner ('13)

This past weekend, Rabbi Kerner's 12th grade shiur had a marvelous shabbaton in rural Monsey. The shabbaton kicked off on Friday with a parsha shiur at Rabbi Kerner's shul, Kehillat New Hempstead. Then, the shiur played an intense game of tackle football in Orchard Hill Park. On Friday night, Rabbi Bechhofer spoke to the shiur at the Friday Night Oneg after an inspirational Kabbalat Shabbat by Devir Kahan. On Shabbos day, the boys was treated to a scrumptious meal by Rebbetzin Kerner and immersed themselves in Chumash and Gemara. After Shabbos, the shiur went bowling, where they saw Jesse Tawil on top of his game.

A great time was had by all. Many thanks to Rabbi and Rebbetzin Kerner for a wonderful Shabbos!

 LIONS UPDATE

VARSITY HOCKEY LIONS ARE GOING TO THE 'SHIP!
Team looking for league record 10th Championship
by Yoni Kram ('13)

This past Tuesday night, the MTA Lions faced the DRS Wildcats in a packed Greenhouse in the semi-final game of the Yeshiva League Hockey playoffs. The Lions, powered by their aggressive play and the loud fans, took a 1-0 lead on an Akiva Gottleib goal, and held that lead though the first two periods. The Lions defense was spectacular throughout the night as senior defensemen Avi Borgen, Eitan Rosenfeld and Moshe Lifschitz stopped the Wildcat offense. In the third period, however, the Wildcats scored two goals to put them up 2-1, with a mere two minutes left in the game. But then, with 1:24 left in regulation, Junior star Dovid Ort scored a clutch goal to tie the game up. The Lions gained momentum and Moshe Lifschitz knew exactly what to do with it. With 0:34 left in the game, Moshe scored on a wrist-shot off a face-off in the DRS zone to win the game! MTA will face TABC in the Championship on Sunday, March 10th. View the video that David Herskowitz ('13) produced in advance of the big game.

Varsity Basketball Lions Advance to Sarachek Tier II Semi-Finals

by Ezra Teichman ('14)

On Thursday evening, playing in front of hundreds of fans, the Lions faced the Beren Academy Stars of Houston, TX in what turned out to be a nail biter. After a strong first quarter by the Lions, the game was all tied up at 12. But, in the second quarter the Lions' defense slipped and they were down 23-18 going into he half. Led by Shauli Naumberg, the Lions bounced back in the third and were down just one going into the fourth. They were able to tie it up, but were unable to execute down the stretch and lost 45-41. The loss dropped MTA to Tier II.

On Friday morning, the Lions faced off against the Ohr Chaim Knights of Toronto; the team rebounded from the loss the previous night, to easily defeat the Knights 55-29. They will next play in the Semi-Finals on Sunday.

Soccer Lions Edged by Flatbush

by Yoni Kram ('13)

On Tuesday night, the Lions faced the Flatbush Falcons in the opening night of the soccer season. In a back and forth game lead by the offense of Yoni Schwartz (2 goals) and Phil Meyer (2 goals), the Lions ultimately came short in a 9-8 loss. The Lions showed a lot of potential in this first game and hope to make a good run this season.
