President Joel Presented with Pirchei Yitzchak
This past week, Meir Finkelstein ('13) and Dovid Schwartz ('13) presented a copy of the inaugural edition of Pirchei Yitzchak to YU President Richard Joel. The two Seniors founded Pirchei Yitzchak, modeled after Yeshiva University's Beis Yitzchak, last year as their Capstone Project for Honors College. Pirchei Yitzchak is an all Hebrew Torah journal, with articles written by MTA students and Rebbeim. Meir and Dovid were responsible for all aspects of the publication, from collecting the articles to meeting with the publisher. While Pirchei Yitzchak focuses on the massechta that the yeshiva learns during the year, it contains articles of all types. For example, one student wrote about the interplay between science and Torah. The next issue is scheduled to come out on Massseches Bava Metzia sometime later this year.
MTA Goes Pink

by Shimmy Mandelbaum ('16)

Sharsheret, Hebrew for "chain," is a Jewish organization founded in November 2001, designed to help women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families. Since its founding, Sharsheret has assisted over 23,000 patients suffering with breast cancer, has involved over 1,400 supporters and has introduced over 250 educational programs in America alone. Sharsheret has been nominated as a participant in the LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance, and was chosen as a recipient of the New York State Innovation in Breast Cancer Early Detection and Research Award.

This past Wednesday, Sharsheret representatives visited MTA in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness day. The students and faculty at MTA were asked to wear a pink article of clothing that day and an outstanding group of people followed through with that request, joining organizations and schools across the country. Sharsheret sold pink donuts and all money collected went directly to the non-profit organization.

The Great Debate a Great Success for MTA Debaters

On Sunday, MTA hosted the annual Great Debate and it was once again an outstanding event, despite the huge amounts of snow that threatened to cancel it. Over 165 debaters from across the country met to debate issues of immigration and methods of speeding up the waiting process to become citizens. The timely topic challenged the debaters to come up with new methods for the process.  Special thanks to MTA parents Rabbi Elchanan Dulitz and Mr. Hale Perlmutter who served as judges. Other judges were members of YU/Stern Debate team, former MTA debaters Sammy Flaks, David Leshaw, Moshe Shulman and Eli Bochner, as well as Rabbi Schimmel. Both novice debaters and experienced debaters served as timekeepers.

And, of course, the MTA Debate team, under the leadership of Mrs. Levitt, did not disappoint. MTA won both first and second place debater, with Moshe Rosensweig ('14) claiming the #1 spot, and Asher Finkelstein ('15) grabbing the #2 spot. Additionally, the debate team of Yitzi Lindenbaum ('14) and Asher Finkelstein finished in second. The great performances led to an impressive third place overall finish for the MTA squad, behind the Heschel School and Chicagoland.

Mock Trial Team Defeats High School of American Studies

by Meir Barg ('16) and CJ Glicksman ('16)

On Thursday night, the defense of the Mock Trial team competed against the High School of American Studies at Lehman College. The case regarded Morgan Martin, a recent college graduate who is suing his former school, CPU, for misrepresenting itself. His claim is that when he was a high school senior looking into colleges, CPU seemed great, but after graduating that college, he found that he couldn't get a job and that his experience at the school was extremely underwhelming. CPU argues that it's Morgan's own fault that he can't get a job because he did not apply himself well at college and his grades reflected that. They claim that they were forthright about what they had to offer and did not deceive those who were looking into the college.

It was a very heated match and both teams did extremely well, but after some intense testimonies and examinations, MTA came out on top. Congratulations to witnesses Meir Barg (Dr. Shannon Charlton, Dean of Admissions at CPU), Menachem Mermelstein (Dana Detter, Admissions Counselor at CPU), and Shai Cohen (Casey Key, former classmate of Morgan's at CPU) on their awesome presentations. Congratulations also to lawyers Dovid Schwartz, Daniel Jaroslawicz, and Yosef Sklar on their superb performances. MTA's next match will be as the plaintiff's on February 26th. If they win that match they will clinch qualification in the elimination tournament. Thank you to coach JoJo Freundel for his great coaching that led MTA to the victory.

Chess Team Begins Season with Strong Performance
by Ori Putterman ('14)

On Wednesday, the MTA  Lions travelled to TABC in a highly anticipated start to the chess season. The MTA Lion "Kings", as they are colloquially known, came in expecting a tough matchup against the teams present from TABC, Shaarei Torah, and JEC. Although MTA was missing several of its key players, we still managed to pull out an important second place finish, just one game behind the leader. Crucial contributions from chess team stalwarts Ori Putterman and Larry Likhtenstein powered the team, and Captain Yoni Schwartz set the tone for the match early with a big win against Shaarei. Coach Rabbi Mendelson was very pleased with his team's play and has high hopes for the season. We wish this team luck, as they prepare for their next match in two weeks.
College Bowl Season Gets Underway

by Meir Barg ('16)

Last Thursday, the College Bowl team kicked off the season with an eventful match. On the way to the match, the bus was unexpectedly delayed, which lengthened the trip. Unfortunately, because the boys came more than ten minutes late, they were forced to forfeit the first round. However, during the second round, the team played very well, but lost by just a few points.

Trivia questions were asked about various topics, from chemistry to sports, and from history to outer space. There were questions about Jazz funerals, Columbus' navigation, and Tiger Woods. Led by Mr. Toporovsky, both the JV and Varsity teams made a great impression. Good luck to the team in their next match.

Happenings
  • Over 20 MTA faculty members have been provide with iPads to spend time learning and exploring the latest educational technology. On Sunday, they spent over 7 hours in professional development with an Apple expert to learn best-practices and what educational apps can be most effective in the classroom.

  • MATANOS L'EVYONIM (by Mayer Fink '16): On Monday, MTA began a matanos l'evyonim campaign via Od Yosef Chai, a program that has raised money in shuls and schools for over 25 years. For every $5 raised, students receive raffle tickets; the prizes include a set of shas and tickets to an NHL game. The class that raises the most money will receive a "casual Friday" opportunity and pizza.
 LIONS UPDATE

Varsity Hockey Lions Win Thriller Over TABC
by Yoni Kram ('13)

In the final game of their regular season, the MTA Hockey Lions hosted the TABC Storm in what would prove to be an extremely memorable game. The Lions' offense was powered by Akiva Gottlieb and Moshe Lifschitz, and with the score knotted at two goals a piece with less than a minute left in the third period, everyone expected this game to go into overtime. However, with just five seconds left, the Lions took a face-off in the TABC zone, and Menachem Mermelstein was able to back-hand the ball in with 1 second left to win the game! The Lions players and fans stormed the court and hope to take this momentum with them into the playoffs.

Varsity Basketball Falls to MDY
by Ezra Teichman ('14)

On Tuesday night the Lions headed out to Brooklyn to face the MDY Warriors in the final game of the regular season. The Lions won the first two meetings between these two teams in close games that went down to the wire. But this game was a different story. Due to the sub par defense of the Lions and the great shot making of MDY, the Lions found themselves down 19-5 after the first quarter. The two teams played evenly in the second quarter before MDY exploded for 22 points in the 3rd quarter (on four 3 pointers in the quarter) to put the game away. The Lions were led by Shauli Naumberg (9) and Hami Alexander (8). The Lions finished the regular season with a 12-2 record and clinched the number 4 seed and a first round bye. They will face Yeshiva of Waterbury in an exhibition match next Tuesday.

JV Recap

In the first game of the JV/Varsity Basketball double header against the Magen David Yeshiva Warriors on Tuesday, the JV Lions came out to play from the get-go. In a game that saw solid play from the entire Lions' roster, the Lions took a commanding lead that they were able to hold until the final buzzer, finishing with an 18 point victory. With this win, the Lions are entering the playoffs as the 7 seed, and will be facing TABC at home in the first round of the playoffs this coming Tuesday evening. We are confident that the Lions can use the momentum gained from this win to power them through the playoffs.

The JV Hockey Lions suffered defeat at the hands of the Frisch Cougars on Wednesday night in their final game of the season.
