MTA Heads to Kutsher's Resort for a School-Wide Shabbaton

Last Thursday evening, MTA students boarded the awaiting Monsey Trails buses for the long awaited School-wide Shabbaton. Upon arrival at the hotel, the students headed to the Starlight Auditorium where they were literally mesmerized. Our visiting hypnotist had students swimming like fish, screaming for a million dollars, and dancing like rock stars. Following the show, a massive late-night BBQ was served to conclude the first evening.

On Friday, after davening and a shiur from Rabbi Tanchum Cohen in  which he explained some of the requirements of donating maaser to tzedakah, followed by breakfast, students headed out to the fields for 9th/10th and 11th/12th grade football tournaments. After football and lunch, students had the opportunity to continue playing football, to participate in mini-hockey tournaments, to swim in the pool, play ping-pong or billiards, or just relax.

Finally, Shabbos arrived. After a beautiful maariv led by Rabbi Cohen, dinner was served, and inspiring divrei torah were delivered by student president Eli Weinstein '13 and Eli Markowitz '16. Rebbeim then had some time to learn with their talmidim before the start of the Newlywed Game. Rabbi Schiller and Rabbi Kerner delighted the Juniors and Seniors, while Willy Kluger '15 and Joseph Wolf '15, as well as Mrs. Levitt and her husband, had the Freshmen and Sophomores rolling. At the optional tisch afterwards, Rabbi Mendelson enlightened students with a moving story that took place during the sinking of the Titanic, and Yehoshua Szafranski '14 inspired us with his words.

After Shabbos morning davening, students had the opportunity to learn with their rebbeim before a large kiddush spread was presented. The boys then broke up for a specially designed program, reflecting the theme of the weekend "We only lost electricity - but we always have POWER" with the many YU mentors who joined us on the shabbaton. Following lunch and some relaxation time, students had the option to attend an "Ask the Rabbi" session with Rabbi Taubes and several rebbeim. At Shalosh Seudos, which started with remarks and concluded with remarks from Rabbi Green, the Seniors led the school in singing zemiros. Special mention  to Dov Fink '13, Avi Jensen '15, and Meir Barg '16, who also delivered beautiful divrei torah over Shabbos.

The shabbaton concluded with a powerful melava malka that included pizza, fries, onion rings, ice cream, and a lot of singing and dancing. Avi Sebbag '13 delivered a passionate speech describing the pride of being part of MTA, a school with a rich history and a continuous exciting spirit.

Rabbi Ephraim Travis, US Army Chaplain, Comes to Visit

This past Tuesday, several classes were privileged to hear from Rabbi Ephraim Travis who is a Chaplain in the United States Army. He is one of eight Orthodox Chaplains on Active Duty in the US Army and is the Battalion Chaplain for the 189th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 82nd Sustainment Brigade, Fort Bragg NC. He served in Iraq for almost 10 months and is currently the Jewish Chaplain assigned to Fort Bragg.

Rabbi Travis spoke about why he joined the US Army and taught us about how we should appreciate the incredible chesed that the United States does for the Jewish people. He then went on to describe some of his experiences in the Army, including the thoughts and emotions of the soldiers as they were in battle and under attack. His experiences of maintaining a true Torah lifestyle while deployed in Iraq were nothing short of inspiring. They make us really appreciate all the luxuries of home that we have and how easy it is for us to learn Torah and do Mitzvos. His discussions about his interactions with non-Jews and his role as a spiritual leader on the Army base was most fascinating in that even the non-Jewish soldiers turned to him, representing G-d as a source of inspiration and guidance. It is truly amazing to know that there are people like Rabbi Travis out there who represent the ideal of truly being a "light unto the nations."

MTA Students Again Take Part in Sandy Relief Efforts

MTA students once again went out to help with clean-up efforts in communities damaged by Hurricane Sandy. This time, the students traveled to Sea Gate, Brooklyn, where they spent the day cleaning out homes damaged by the winds and flooding caused by the storm. Interestingly, the students ended up at the home of iconic Jewish musician Mordechai ben David, who joined the boys and appreciated their efforts.

 LIONS UPDATE

Varsity Basketball Cruises to Victory

The Lions stepped off the bus on Avenue J to face Flatbush Falcons on Wednesday. They proceeded to grab a commanding 21-5 lead at the half, on the strength of aggressive, swarming defense and numerous fast break hoops by Yosef Sklar, Shai Kaminetzky, Zak Lenik and Shauli Naumberg. Following the intermission, the Lions' Shai Kaminetzky and Ben Zion Feld led an offensive charge that enabled the Lions to extend their seemingly insurmountable lead to 31-11. To the Falcons' credit, they wouldn't go quietly into the night as hot shooting led by Raymond Mosseri, enabled the Falcons to cut the Lion's lead to 36-26 before the Lions settled down and closed the game out for their 8th consecutive win overall (3rd league win), without any losses. The Lions' offensive charge was led by Shai Kaminetzky (20 pts), Shauli Naumberg (7), Ben Zion Feld (5) and Zak Lenik (5).

Unfortunately, the JV basketball team wouldn't fair as well against Flatbush. After a very strong first quarter start, the Lions looked like they were going to take it away. A couple of threes from Willy Kluger (6) and some rebounding by Yosef Mammon and Josh Blumenthal gave the Lions a 10-7 lead going into the second. The rest of the game wasn't so exciting for the Lions as they suffered defeat at the Falcons hands. It was a rough shooting night along with some lackadaisical defense. However, Yaakov Richland stepped up his defense to give the team another lock down defender. Yoni Samet finished with some strong scoring.

Varsity Hockey Gets Two Big Wins

The Lions' took on the SAR Sting on Tuesday night in their home opener. After a tight first period, in which Captain Eitan Rosenfeld scored on a full-court turnaround slapshot, the Lions offense came alive in the second period when they scored 4 more, 1 more from Eitan, 2 from Menachem Mermelstein, and 1
from Akiva Gottlieb. The final score was 5-1 MTA.

On Thursday night, the Varsity Hockey Lions faced off against the Ramaz Rams. This time, the Lions offense did not hesitate. Just 58 seconds into the game, Akiva Gottlieb opened the scoring, and Menachem Memelstein would add a hat trick in the first period alone. Akiva added his second goal of the game in the second period and the Lions went on to win 5-2. Moshe Lifschitz and Eitan Rosenfeld had assists.
