MESSAGE FROM OUR ROSH YESHIVA

.הללו את ה' מן הארץ...רוח סערה עשה דברו
Praise Hashem from the earth... stormy winds that fulfill His word.
This phrase from Tehillim (148:7-8), recited daily during Pesukei DeZimra, is part of a list of "natural" occurrences which are presented, among other reasons, in order to teach that all aspects of what we call nature actually function not independently, but rather in fulfillment of and in consonance with the will of Hashem. Every gust of wind, from the gentle and welcome summer breeze to the destructive and frightening hurricane force gales, evidences the hand of Hashem, and can lead to a deeper understanding of His greatness and His might. Moreinu HaRav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, zt'l, pointed out on different occasions that Hashem did not reveal Himself only in ancient times and only to people like our great prophets. Rather, He continually reveals Himself to all of mankind, as the most wondrous revelation of His presence is evident in creation, in the natural order, in the cosmic drama. Most of the time, though, the vast majority of people, busy as we are, remain oblivious to this revelation, and are unable to see His presence through the wonders of nature. Occasionally, however, an event takes place which clearly demonstrates to all the power of Hashem and of the forces which He built into His world, and the utter helplessness of even modern, technologically advanced, 21st century man to contend with that power. A perceptive analysis of such an event should lead to at least some measure of humility. In the wake of the devastating storm of this past week, which wreaked havoc upon us all and disrupted the regular and comfortable routines of virtually everybody in the New York City area, we are certainly humbled by what transpired and we are reminded that even with all of our marvelous scientific developments, we are still rather limited human beings. At the same time, of course, our hearts go out to those who endured unimaginable suffering, resulting from the tragic loss of the lives of loved ones, of homes, of property and of personal belongings. We should all stand ready, even when in awe of Hashem's greatness and might, to be of practical assistance in whatever ways we can to those individuals who are in need of our help; it is our plan in the coming days at MTA to involve our talmidim as necessary in special chessed projects geared towards providing such assistance. In the meantime, we wish everyone as pleasant, as safe and as warm a Shabbos as possible. |

MTA Welcomes Prospective Students and Families at Annual Open House
This past Sunday, and fortunately long before the storm, MTA hosted the annual Open House for prospective students and their families. The program began in historic Lamport Auditorium where guests were welcomed by freshman CJ Glicksman. Following this, the guests heard from Mr. Shuey Jacoby, Rabbi Josh Joseph, Rabbi Taubes, and from student speaker Binyomin Shtaynberger who impressed upon the crowd the warmth of our culture and just how many unique opportunities are available to MTA students. Following the school's new promotional video, parents and students were separated into different classrooms to hear different presentations about various elements of the school.
8th graders were also taken on a quick tour of the campus, and parents and their sons reconvened at the Curriculum Fair in Weissberg Commons. At the fair, the guests were able to meet the faculty in a more informal setting. We hope to welcome many of these guests into the MTA community next year! Hurricane Sandy Cancels Formal Classes, but Learning Continues
Although school was cancelled this week due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our students took it upon themselves to continue to learn. Among other things, the Markowitz's hosted boys for learning and singing with Rabbi Tanchum Cohen on Thursday evening, Rabbi Mendelson arranged a phone conference with many of his talmidim, and Rabbi Richter arranged a small shiur for students in his neighborhood. We look forward to resuming regular classes next week, please G-d.

Varsity Basketball Lions Romp in Home Opener
The Lions opened up the MYHSBL league portion of their schedule against the HAFTR Hawks by running and gunning to commanding leads of 10-0 and 17-2 on the strength of buckets by 6 different players; this was capped off by a long 3 from Ezra Teichman. The Hawks played the Lions closer in the second quarter, but the Lions extended their lead to 32-16 at the half. The Lions pushed their lead to 20 points in the 3rd quarter. The Hawks responded with buckets by Shoenfeld, Spivak and Baratz to cut the Lions' lead to 12, but they would not get any closer.
