Preventing Homelessness
In 2009, the Foundation's Board of Directors chose to focus efforts and resources on homelessness prevention. With the economic crisis severely affecting the Sacramento region and putting extraordinary stress on the homeless system, the area was on the cusp of difficult consequences for those without shelter. The Foundation tackled this issue head-on by investing in effective strategies, by working closely with homelessness providers, and testing innovative solutions that challenged the region to rethink its' response to homelessness. Since then, our community has:
- Reduced overall homelessness by 15.8% in the past two years
- Received national attention through the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP), which has prevented homelessness and rapidly rehoused over 1900 households or over 5000 individuals
- Embarked on key activities to improve our current system of coordination and prepare for new federal guidelines on homelessness prevention, called HEARTH - Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing - which will require our homeless system to reevaluate how it provides homeless services
The Foundation has taken a leadership role in these activities, and we will continue to support efforts that strengthen the work of homeless providers and build an effective system geared toward preventing homelessness.
