Area Organizations Receive Grants to Prepare for Winter

The Community's Greatest Need Fund of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation

SACRAMENTO, Calif., December 10, 2012 - The Sacramento Region Community Foundation today announced grants awards of $72,500 from its Community's Greatest Need Fund to homelessness providers for winter preparedness. These grants will help providers to create and implement a system of winter shelter for homeless individuals throughout the 4-county region. For example, in Sacramento County alone, on any given night, 2,358 people are homeless, including 604 families with children. While longer-term solutions are being developed and deployed, there is still an urgent need for shelter during the cold, wet winter months to save lives.

Ruth Blank, CEO of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation states "The Foundation is committed to supporting efforts throughout the region that will provide families and individuals with shelter during the cold months. We are proud to be working with organizations that offer such important service to those in need."

The following organizations in the 4-county region were selected and grant funding will provide the following services for homeless individuals:

Preventing Homelessness

In 2009, the Foundation's Board of Directors chose to focus efforts and resources on homelessness prevention. With the economic crisis severely affecting the Sacramento region and putting extraordinary stress on the homeless system, the area was on the cusp of difficult consequences for those without shelter. The Foundation tackled this issue head-on by investing in effective strategies, by working closely with homelessness providers, and testing innovative solutions that challenged the region to rethink its' response to homelessness. Since then, our community has:

  • Reduced overall homelessness by 15.8% in the past two years
  • Received national attention through the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP), which  has prevented homelessness and rapidly rehoused over 1900 households or over 5000 individuals
  • Embarked on key activities to improve our current system of coordination and prepare for new federal guidelines on homelessness prevention, called HEARTH - Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing - which will require our homeless system to reevaluate how it provides homeless services

The Foundation has taken a leadership role in these activities, and we will continue to support efforts that strengthen the work of homeless providers and build an effective system geared toward preventing homelessness.
