More Huge Trout Stocked!!
____________________________________________________________

Thank you for being with us again.  There is an incredible quantity of trout on "The Stretch," and, that quantity has never had the size and quality of the great fish that are now plying our waters!  The 1st video below is of Tom discussing the trout on Pine Creek and the Brown Trout Club.  The 2nd video is of the Slate Run Tackle Shop's Brown Trout Club stocking many of the 24 to 32 inch trout.   The 3rd is a video of  Ed Beakley catching a great fighting brown trout at Clark Farm Access.  The 4th is of Scott Yoder catching a large, incredibly-colored brown on a dry fly fished downstream.   The 5th is a video of a Jim Leinbach catching a nice brownie at Tomb Flats.  The sixth and last video shows several flies on the water: an emerged dun, a egg layer, and a spinner.  The next newsletter will have more videos of the Brown Trout Club stocking as well as anglers catching the fish. There is a lot more planned as flies are hatching, and anglers are catching.

Three Stages Of Flies On The Water

What's working...

What's working are Slate Drakes, BWOs, Gray Foxes, Brown Drakes, Sulphurs, Caddis, Light Cahills, and Yellow Stone Flies.  The Green Drake has also been seen on the water.  Hang a dropper under a big Drake and try a caddis soft-hackle or a sulphur soft-hackle emerger.  Underneath you can be successful with Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns, Golden Micro Stones, Rycophilias, Hare's Ears, Zug Bugs, San Juan Worms, Squirmy Wormies, and Prince Nymphs.  Also, try a weighted bugger or Sculpin in the current.  The trout are looking for a meal, so present your fly even if you do not see duns or spinners: they are watching for a meal!
If you know an angler under 16 years of age, Slate Run Tackle Shop gives free voluntary Junior Fishing Licenses!  The only thing you'll need for the free Junior License is the Social Security number for the person receiving the Junior License!

Time To Retire

It has been 40 years since we started the shop.  So much has happened on Pine Creek since then - Babb Creek is a trout stream, Pine's fly hatches have prospered and multiplied, The Stretch (Catch-And-Release) where everyone can catch exceptional trout year round has expanded to 2.8 miles, and the culture of conservation, appreciation, and joy of this very special stretch of Pine Creek is prospering.  If you've entertained the thought of owning Wolfes General Store/Slate Run Tackle Shop, this is your opportunity.  Give Lisa Lynn a call at 570-660-0626, a Davis Real Estate realtor.  Thanks, Tom & Deb.

Just a few more casts...

The fallacy of matching the hatch

Don't get me wrong from the title of this; I am not saying it is not important to know the aquatic insect activity in the area you are going to fish.  What I am saying is that it is probably much more important to know what the trout have been taking in the recent past rather than the flies that are on the water presently.  I presume the reason for knowing what flies are on the water is so the angler has knowledge of what is available to the fish.  But, this is where the discrepancy comes in: the flies on the water may not be what the trout are taking at all!  If your purpose is to have your fly join the crowd on the water, by all means, match the hatch.  But, if you want to catch more trout, it might be better to match what they have been taking, whether or not that insect is present.
It was some years ago when I was fishing Lycoming Creek at Camp Susque with three friends.  We would revolve through the long pool, each getting a chance to fish all the water.  As it happened, I caught at least half a dozen trout while my learned and more hatch-astute friends were still fishless.  "What do you have on," they asked.  "Joe Brooks' tie of the Red Quill," I responded.  I can still hear their laughter echoing across the water.  "They haven't been on the water for a week," they eked out between hysterics.  I still think it strange they ignored what the trout were still obviously looking for so they could be correct according to their favorite hatch chart.
A friend fished a spot just today where we have had a lot of surface activity with very cooperative trout.  This action has occurred pretty consistently over the last week.  Today he started with what he knew the fish had wanted - no action.  He went through all the flies we've seen - still no takers.  He then switched to a Copper John nymph tied behind a cone-headed bugger and he was into one of the greatest fish-catching afternoons he has had.  One of the catches was a slab-sided rainbow over 25 inches long!  Scott started fishing with a plan to use what he knew the fish had been taking.  When it didn't work, he went through his list of additional possibilities - again without a hook-up.  He then reached deep into his bag of tricks with the streamer and nymph, and the rest of the afternoon produced memories he'll always remember.
Develop your bag of tricks to try after the "obvious" doesn't seem to be doing the job.  And, don't throw out the hatch chart with the garbage, but do put it into perspective.  The chart, at best, gives an idea of what could be happening and possibly what has happened over a period of many years.  Now, reality is another story and you'd have a better chance of hatch-matching infallibility if you could just ask the trout.  We can't do that, which makes the second best idea watching the trout's recent behavior.  Watch carefully and usually they'll let you know their preferences on a specific pool, in an exact location, and on any given day.  If they still keep the key to hooking-up a secret, do what Scott did today and reach into that bag of tricks...

May you hear the bird song, smell the honeysuckle, calm with the gurgle of the water, revel in the sight of hatching flies, and have peace...
Tight lines,
Dave Wonderlich
