A Black Bear and Great Fishing Fun!
____________________________________________________________

Thank you for being with us again.  There are incredible numbers of trout on "The Stretch," and, many of those trout are huge!  The 1st video below is of a large black bear that crossed Pine above Scott, Ed, and Dave (notice the ducks that pass the bear).  The 2nd video is of COL Joseph Beiter (Ret.) catching a very nice trout in Pine behind the shop.  The 3rd is a video of Scott Yoder working his magic as he fishes a dry fly downstream at Clark Farm Access.  The 4th is of Zachary Lauer catching a fighting trout at Tomb Flats.  The fifth video is of Lane Steinmetz catching a fine brownie at Black Walnut Bottom.  The sixth and last video shows Bruce Knauber catching a big brown trout at Clark Farm.  There is a lot more planned as flies continue to hatch and anglers continue to catch...

What's working...

This is the time of year when there are many different flies that can work well from one fishing area to another.  So many different flies are hatching and attracting trout, there are even more hatches that are winding down but have the trout constantly on the prowl to eat them because they are a preferred fare.  Also, we have some hatches that are just starting in enough numbers to interest trout.  Anyone fishing during the summer on Pine Creek as well as the tributaries should include these flies in their bag of tricks: BWOs, Rusty Spinners, various Caddis, Gray Fox, Pale Evening Duns, Pale Morning Duns, Slate Drakes, Green Drakes, Brown Drakes, Yellow Drakes, Gray Drakes, Black Stone Flies, Yellow Stone Flies, Light Cahills, Pink Cahills, Cream Cahills, Blue Quill, White Flies, and Tricos! Hang a dropper under the Slate Drake or a strike indicator and try a caddis soft hackle emerger, BWO emerger, Slate Drake or Cahill soft hackle emerger.  Underneath you can be successful with Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns, Golden Micro Stones, Rycophilias, Hare's Ears, Zug Bugs, San Juan Worms, Squirmy Wormies, Yellow Stones, and Prince Nymphs.  When the water is higher, try a weighted bugger or Sculpin near the shore - if the water is lower try the same offering in the current.  Big Psycho Ants become King in the low water during the later evening - try both a drag-free float and twitching!  The trout are looking for a meal - give them what they might be looking for, and present the offering in a way that they just can't refuse!
If you know an angler under 16 years of age, Slate Run Tackle Shop gives free voluntary Junior Fishing Licenses!  The only thing you'll need for the free Junior License is the social security number for the person receiving the Junior License!

Time To Retire

It has been 40 years since we started the shop.  So much has happened on Pine Creek since then - Babb Creek is a trout stream, Pine's fly hatches have prospered and multiplied, The Stretch (Catch-And-Release) where everyone can catch exceptional trout year round has expanded to 2.8 miles, and the culture of conservation, appreciation, and joy of this very special stretch of Pine Creek is prospering.  If you've entertained the thought of owning Wolfes General Store/Slate Run Tackle Shop, this is your opportunity.  Give Lisa Lynn a call at 570-660-0626, a Davis Real Estate realtor.  Thanks, Tom & Deb.

Just a few more casts...

Leave trout alone in warmer water but take the opportunity to learn more about your favorite stretch of water.

Low water can be the bane of a fly fisherman's existence, or it can be a condition for periods of time when a lot of learning happens, and if done well, a lot of catching can take place.
The water, as this is written, is now around 1.25 on the gauge - a foot and a quarter.  It is certainly low, susceptible to getting warm but infinitely readable and transparent in mood, fish location, and feeding lanes.
The low water will heat quickly with direct sunlight.  When it warms on the longer, slow stretches, the temperatures in the shallower water can reach the high 70s and approach 80.  Below Waterville, at the Camp Kline gauge, the water may even reach 83-84 degrees.  The water, in general on The Stretch usually runs three to four degrees colder.  This is both because of the cold-water tributaries as well as strong stream-bottom springs.  When you take a temperature and get 78 degrees, you don't see trout where you put your thermometer - the trout automatically move to locations where the water is colder and, for the most part, has greater dissolved oxygen (we've all seen the huge pods of trout at the mouths of Slate and Little Slate).  When they move to survive, let them alone.  Additional stress by being caught can be lethal to the fish!  Help us protect our resource, leave the trout alone until higher water arrives or the water drops in temperature.
While the water is warm, either fish the tributaries or fish for bass in Pine in the low, slower water.  Actually, smallmouth fishing in these conditions can make you much more knowledgeable about the creek as a trout fisherman.  Watch the flows, they are the feeding stations even when the water is higher.  Observe the hideouts the fish use in the stream, they will exist all year round and provide locations of holding locations in much higher, faster water.  And, have fun.  Try the Psycho Ant presented with a natural drift as well as twitched and watch the smallmouths come all the way out of the water for your offering.  When the water gets colder and it is safe to fish for the trout, try the same tactics and you may have the trout flying out of the water for the take.
We have more stockings scheduled for the fall.  Watch the stream updates and we'll try to let you know in advance when we'll be putting them in - we would appreciate your help!  Until then, may you have blue skies and tight lines...
