4-15-2016 Slate Run Tackle Shop Newsletter
Amazing Trout Fishing!!
____________________________________________________________

Thank you for being with us again.  The Whole Stretch has been stocked with incredible trout three separate times by the Slate Run Tackle Shop's Brown Trout Club.  Also, the Pa Fish And Boat Commission stocked twice and did an incredible job of spreading the trout out from the mouth of Little Pine, through The Stretch and all the way to Blackwell!  The trout size and their quantity in these 5 stockings are incredible!!  The 1st video below is of Scott Yoder talking about his great fishing fortune the last few days.  The 2nd video is of Scott catching a few of his trout.  The 3rd is a video of Chris Keays catching trout the 1st week in April at Clark Farm Access on March Browns on the surface.  The 4th is of Jim Litrun catching trout the end of March on a midge from the surface at Tomb Flats.  And, the last is a video of a Black Caddis on a tree at Tomb Flats the end of March - the caddis are still there but in much greater numbers.  The next newsletter will have videos of the Brown Trout Club stockings done this week; of course there will be a good look at the great fish as they go into Pine. There is a lot more planned as we continue stocking, flies continue to hatch, and anglers are caught by the camera catching their trout. Stop in at the shop and say hello, we'll try to answer any questions you may have about The Stretch, and help in any way we can!  You can also call for the latest stream conditions, hatches, and equipment...

Scott Yoder And A Few Of His Many Trout

Chris Keays - Trout On A March Brown Dry The 1st Week In April!
(It looks like we can expect these earlier hatches when Pine
has a winter without icing over and it is an early, warmer spring.
Look at all the March Browns in the air and on the water!

Black Caddis At Tomb Flats The Last Week In March, 2016
And, They Are Still There But In Much Greater Numbers!!

What's working...

Hendricksons, BWOs, Black Caddis, Tan Caddis, March Browns (warmer days are here!), Quill Gordons, Blue Quills, Black Stone Flies, Brown Stone Flies, Slate Drake Parachute dries to imitate the emerged Black Stone, and black midges! Hang a dropper under the Slate Drake or a strike indicator and try a caddis soft hackle emerger, BWO emerger, a Hendrickson Emerger, or a March Brown soft hackle emerger.  Underneath you can be successful with Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns, Golden Micro Stones, Rycophilias, Hare's Ears, Zug Bugs, San Juan Worms, Squirmy Wormies, and Prince Nymphs.  When the water is higher, try a weighted bugger or Sculpin near the shore - if the water is lower try the same offering in the current.  The trout are looking for a meal and many have been seen in the flats and slower stream edge water boiling on the surface!
If you know an angler under 16 years of age, Slate Run Tackle Shop gives free voluntary Junior Fishing Licenses!  The only thing you'll need for the free Junior License is the Social Security number for the person receiving the Junior License!

Time To Retire

It has been 40 years since we started the shop.  So much has happened on Pine Creek since then - Babb Creek is a trout stream, Pine's fly hatches have prospered and multiplied, The Stretch (Catch-And-Release) where everyone can catch exceptional trout year round has expanded to 2.8 miles, and the culture of conservation, appreciation, and joy of this very special stretch of Pine Creek is prospering.  If you've entertained the thought of owning Wolfes General Store/Slate Run Tackle Shop, this is your opportunity.  Give Lisa Lynn a call at 570-660-0626, a Davis Real Estate realtor.  Thanks, Tom & Deb.

Just a few more casts...

Well, I was there with Scott!  It was an incredible late afternoon...  We stood along the shore where the slower water glides inside the faster moving middle current.  The whole pool seemed poised to offer something special, but, that may have just been my hopeful anticipation!  A few Hendricksons started to show themselves and I saw a few flashes under the surface - it was something but not the awakening pictured in my mind.
During the last few weeks there had been some good hatches and periods when there were quite a few "bugs" doing their dance on the water so we watched each run, pocket, and glide on the long pool.  Then, on a scan toward the top of the stretch, it looked like a rainbow trout jumped a foot out of the water and the sun reflecting off its side gave a split-second, clear picture of the pink-magenta side.  "Scott, I think I just saw a rainbow jump in the faster water."  We started upstream and, "I saw one too," his voice carrying a tone of excitement.  Excitement it was!  We stood watching as the scene in front of us appeared to show a hundred trout circling and slashing the surface with their dorsal fins giving away their positions.  There were Hendricksons and Caddis Flies everywhere on the water and the trout were feeding with abandon!  We stayed away from the feeding and Scott went up as I angled below...  It was as if it were a frenzy you might see in a fish hatchery!  The aggressiveness of the trout, the numbers, the exposed dorsal fins, the gulping mouths, the flowing water, and the whistling bursts of wind all set the scene.
Scott was trying a new strike indicator with a #12 Flash-Back Pheasant Tail nymph above a #14 Zug Bug.  A flip of his rod landed the flies and indicator near the trout and the first fish was on.  Of course my camera battery was dead, "Scott, I'll be right back, I've got to go to the car for another battery!"  By the time I returned, four or five minutes later, he was on his third trout.  My experience was like Scott's, one backhand flip to the current and another flashing, jumping fish was on!  As you can hear Scott say in one part of the video above, "If I never did this, I'd have never believed...!"
It was a experience that will live on, but I have to mention as we fished, the rainbows were in one area and brown trout in another - one cast I put in front of me in deeper current and immediately had an 18-inch deep-sided brown.  The next cast was back upstream and another 'bow hit!  I have had fishing like this on very special rivers in Alaska.  But this is Pine Creek and the fishing may be the best this year that it has ever been!  The flies, the trout numbers, the size of the fish, the eagles, the otters, the breeze through the Pines, the delicate petals of approaching spring, these are the things that replenish the soul.  I can see Bob McCullough looking down with a very pleased smile!
Other people are reporting the same sightings and experiences on the whole "Stretch."  By the way, Scott had five more of those memorable nights before he left.  One brown he caught in the higher early-week water was very heavy and 30 inches long!  It dashed away in the current... So, incredible fish is still there, and I'm sure many more a lot like him!
We'll have more stockings scheduled.  Watch the stream updates and we'll try to let you know in advance when we'll be putting them in - we would appreciate your help!  Until then, may you have windless days and tight lines...
